I don't it's enough to try to make Destiny 2's Crucible more like Destiny 1's; Destiny 2 is a sequel, so it should bring truly fresh experiences to the table. For the sake of variety and adding new novel experiences to Destiny 2's Crucible, I propose a new game mode:
* Two teams (6v6+) fight on a large map; they could be remastered Combined Arms maps from Destiny 1, they could be chunks taken from a destination patrol maps, or they can be totally new maps.
* Points are earned from kills, and the team with the most points wins.
* PVE enemies are also on the map, and special large bosses spawn periodically. Killing low-tier PVE enemies gives very few points. Killing PVE majors gives more points. Killing other guardians gives a lot of points. Killing those large bosses gives a huge chunk of points.
* Sparrows can be enabled, and vehicles like pikes, interceptors, and tanks can spawn on the map as the battle escalates and teams reach certain point thresholds.
Destiny's PVE is its strongest component, so it would be fun to have a mode that sprinkles some PVE into the PVP. This is somewhat inspired by Titanfall 2's Attrition and Bounty Hunt modes (which seamlessly mixes PVP and PVE) and Warzone in Halo 5 (never played it, but I've seen it).
I don't think this could happen soon, and I recognize that there are other priorities, but this could be something to add in 6 months to a year

That would be really fun and would have some real interesting ramifications if PVE Bosses dropped exclusive loot. Then you have to decide what the priority is. Guardians or the boss. Also lends itself to the possibility of special events and like you say, caters to both pve and pvp types. Sounds like a cool idea to me.
