The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced Tuesday that it will end free supplies of food and water in Puerto Rico this week as the island's supermarkets and other businesses reopen following Hurricane Maria.
NPR reported Tuesday that FEMA will "officially shut off" aid to the island on Wednesday after providing more than 30 million gallons of drinking water and 60 million meals to its inhabitants.
"The reality is that we just need to look around. Supermarkets are open, and things are going back to normal," FEMA Puerto Rico director Alejandro De La Campa told NPR.
Not all of Puerto Rico's government officials agree with the agency's decision to end aid this week. Morovis Mayor Carmen Maldonado told NPR that in her town, the number of customers without power restored to their homes is close to 80 percent and that most residents can't afford the cost of a generator.
"There are some municipalities that may not need the help anymore, because they've got nearly 100 percent of their energy and water back," she said. "Ours is not so lucky."
"This is all something that FEMA should contemplate before eliminating its delivery of these supplies," the mayor added.
De La Campa addressed the need for families to go back to supermarkets and boost the Puerto Rican economy.
What a terrible move. So much of PR still is in desperate need, and we're going to cut off aid to our own citizens?

Whatever. Peurto rico should be made into concentration camps for post modernists and Marxists
-
In brighter news, the construction sector should now have a boom in business to help the economy

FEMA is swamped and they aren't going to be able to fix this shit. The situation in Puerto Rico was dire for decades before the storm, you think we can snap our fingers, dump some money on them and it'll all be fixed? Get real. The sad thing is how quickly it dawned on the citizens how absolutely -blam!-ed they are. They were being told FEMA would swoop in and rebuild everything. That's never been FEMA's job. Houses that aren't even in the current resident's name (they would keep grandpa's name on the deed as a house went through the generations) cannot be covered. People in villages thought they'd be fine, just talk to FEMA get a check in the mail and rebuild instead they get nothing. And the ones who do have documentation aren't going to get fully reimbursed, not even close. They're lucky if the money they get covers the roof over their head. That's not even scratching the surface of the current issue. PR has issues with government corruption, their economy stinks, their best and brightest all leave for the mainland. They've been hurting, this situation just launched them from the frying pan straight into the fire.

FEMA just announced that it's not leaving

The hurricane was months ago. The need isn’t that desperate anymore. People aren’t going to die because FEMA stops sending aid. It’ll be tough, sure, but people will pull through. There will still be some aid from non profits and other private organizations. The people aren’t being abandoned. We should be campaigning for the American people to help our Puerto Rican neighbors. Maybe start a thread spreading awareness about the situation and how we can donate to help instead of uselessly slamming the government for a questionable decision that we can’t change.

Edited by Papo Pechuga: 1/31/2018 7:55:00 PMFEMA or no FEMA, Puerto Rico has always been a shithole. It'll just get worse now. Besides, even though they help, they're just bureoucrates.

Edited by FireFaux487: 1/31/2018 6:04:23 PMNot really the problem of the federal government...

PR was a sh!thole before all of this and will continue to be one. They have no one to blame but themselves for allowing their country to become so bad
-
It be ya own Mexicans

This is a bad move. Puerto Rico is in awful shape and needs help, this won’t bring any good to those people.
-
Maybe if the president of Puerto Rico wasn’t such an incompetent jackass they wouldn’t be in this mess.
-
Why are we giving the shaft to our own citizens? This only accomplishes making us look even worse on the world scale, if we aren't labeled as pariahs at this point.
-
We should just keep cutting taxes. Soon our government will be so broke it won’t be able to help anyone.

Frick frack bubble crack
-
Thought FEMA threw in the towel last year saying the US has too many natural disasters and people need to take care of themselves
-
We’ve been sending so much shit over to them for this hurricane relief aid and it still isn’t enough so I can understand FEMA cutting them off.
so I guess you could say FEMA is saying “-blam!- em”
Edited by Croooc: 1/30/2018 9:29:46 PMHow is it the U.S.s fault for the state of Puerto Rico? The only one to blame is the president of Puerto Rico, who is incompetent. It would be nice if we had the cash to continuously donate money to poorer countries, but we should honestly start worrying about the increasing national debt.
This is a joke
