The Cleveland Indians will stop using the Chief Wahoo logo on their uniforms beginning in 2019, according to Major League Baseball, which said the popular symbol was no longer appropriate for use on the field.
The logo has long been the source of anguish and frustration for those who consider it offensive, outdated and racist, but for many of the team’s fans it is a cherished insignia — a divide that has played out at all levels of sports in recent years with teams featuring such nicknames and insignias. Most universities have stopped using Native American nicknames, while other teams like the Washington Redskins in the N.F.L., for example, have resisted growing pressure to do so.
Chief Wahoo, a cartoonish caricature of a Native American that has assumed several forms over the years, first appeared on the Indians’ uniforms in 1948. In recent decades various groups across North America have appealed to the team to renounce the logo, to no avail. But over the past year the commissioner of baseball, Rob Manfred, has pressured Paul Dolan, Cleveland’s chairman and chief executive, to make a change.
Citing a goal of diversity and inclusion, Manfred said in a statement provided to The New York Times that the Indians organization “ultimately agreed with my position that the logo is no longer appropriate for on-field use in Major League Baseball, and I appreciate Mr. Dolan’s acknowledgment that removing it from the on-field uniform by the start of the 2019 season is the right course.”
Phillip Yenyo, the executive director of the American Indian Movement of Ohio, cheered the decision as, “another step in the right direction,” but lamented that it is being put off for a year.
“Why wait?” he said. “If you are going to go this far and get rid of it, why not do it now? All they are doing is testing it out, because the name has to go, too. The nickname absolutely has to go. It’s not just the logo.”
Some of you may have seen my threads about this in the past. Chief Wahoo is on his way out.
It's the right move, but I will be a bit sad to see him go.
-
Their new logo is pretty sweet
-
This is the right way for stuff to happen- ownership decides it rather than the law.
I'll miss you Chief Wahoo :-(
-
Soooooo, from what I can gather, native Americans aren't offended over it but other people are offended for them. The -blam!- is happening to the world.
-
Damn liberals
-
This is sad. The majority of Indians don't care.
-
I'd rather it got redesigned in a more respectful manner buy ok
-
https://goo.gl/images/mGYqSP Upgrade to an actual Indian
-
Pansies need to stop getting offended, Native Americans could care less about this crap. For that matter we don't care if we are called Indians either.
Yes I am Indian.
-
What a joke.
-
Ostensibly it's because it's outdated, inappropriate, and might offend people, but I'm sure the business people also aren't going to mind the merchandise sales spiking this year as people get Chief Wahoo stuff before it goes away and again next year when people want to have whatever the new logo is. I heard on the radio (don't know how much truth there is to it) that he'll be gone from the on-field uniform, but he'll still be used somewhere because if they stop using him altogether, they eventually lose their trademark, and the trademark is worth a lot.
-
Freedom of expression is broken again as usual.
-
I don't get it. I have read and listened to a few stories about this where the Native Americans say they are not offended by these teams and honestly like them because it refers to their people. Then you have the activist groups that say it is offensive to their People. I can't tell if they are just starting shit to be noticed or if they honestly believe they are the voice of their People.
-
I’m not a baseball fan, but that sucks. Oh well. Not my home team, I hate baseball, and I can understand why they’re doing it so no real harm I suppose.
-
Should stop calling themselves the Indians too, lame name
-
I personally wouldn't have made this decision, but I'll be fine with it depending on what they replace it with
-
From ohio. Chief Wahoo is stupid looking clown face. Good riddance. 👍
-
Why am I not surprised, the pussification of this nation is still spreading like a cancer.
-
#notmyteam I’m a lifelong Atlanta fan. There is nothing wrong with logo changes. Though people like Yenyo should remember that some college teams have permission from local tribes to use their names and have the logos that they use (Florida State Seminoles for example).
-
Twenty years overdue. But late is better than never.
-
People will get offended over anything
-
I don’t see any reason for this.
-
ITT: People getting offended by an action that has no effect on them and telling other people to stop being offended at the same time
-
When are the Braves going to remove their tomahawk? When are the Pirates going to change their logo and name? Pirates were murderers and thieves after all. When are the Yankees going to change their name to something non-derogatory? When are the Giants going to change their name for being offensive to short people?
-
I'm shocked they're keeping "Indians" in today's trigger word society. After all, they aren't really Indians after all. Redskins probably should't be far behind, but probably will be.
-
Good. I think any race based team should be removed from sports. Never understood why people thought it was okay to use a race of people as a mascot.
-
What logo should they use? What would be your idea?
