Do You Like Civilization, And If So Where Did You Start?

I started on civ 3 when it was first new. I was around 13 then. Oddly enough my Mom saw it in the game store and thought it would be educational. I didn't play it at first, but once I started I was hooked. I had the special edition that came in a sexy metal tin, and had a paper fold out of the tech trees. That edition was also very bugged, which made it loads of fun. If you asked for a billion plus gold per turn from any world lead, and demanded that they give it, they would. Then you could precede to hurry the production of anything and everything. Civ 3 is still fun, and has a special place in my heart, but overall civ 4 is my alll time favorite. Religions, efficient unit stacking, and an intuitive world builder made it a blast every game I played. Civ 5 was ok, but I couldn't get past the lack of unit stacking. That literally shattered my preferred play strategy of amassing a hord, and conquering other civs en mass. In any case, I don't usually hang out here in gaming, but I'm flying from China back to the US right now and I've got a long trip (and hopefully a lot of civ time) ahead of me. I'd love to chat with some fellow civ addicts... Lol. Has anyone given the new civ 6 a try? I've heard some good things but I dont know...

  • Civ 4. I still play it til this very day. The whole system is just really satisfying to interact with. I bought Civ5 and tried for a few hours but it didn't really click with me. In Civ 4, i once was involved in a series of wars that spanned the course of a few hundred years. I was attacked by all 9 opposing civilizations at least once during that period of time, ini some cases 2 or 3 times. At one point, i was at war with 5 different civs, one of which never actually even sent an attack army.... I never even knew where some of these civilizations were situated on the map. It was such a tense experience. They all hated me and my glorious culture.... and at the end of that few hundred years, i had one city left. I was beaten to a pulp. I couldn't even muster up the production to create a worker anymore... i was decimated. Then, Ghandi showed up.... the 10th civilization... and he wrecked my last city, -blam!- my women, and burned all of the books in my Great Library. 10/10

    • I started back with Civ2, which is still one of my favourite in the series. I was a bit meh with Civ2, loved Civ4, I am currently playing Civ5, which I feel is the best so far, though I have yet to try Civ6. I have had my Bungie moment with this franchise many years ago. Firaxis are the masters of cutting content and selling it back to you in DLC, and I promised myself to only ever buy the game if the year editions, even if that meant I rarely had the latest version of the game.

    • Yes, started with the original, have played almost all of them. Civ 6 is currently available on Humble monthly for $12.

    • Started on civ 2, skipped 3, played 4, 5, and beyond earth. Haven't played 6 yet. So far beyond earth was my favorite installment in the series.

    • A friend in college bought me civ 4 in 2008, I ended up staying up all night wrapping my head around the game. I even remember the very first city I founded, I spent 10 minutes wandering around the map looking for what I thought was the perfect place, there was an open area surrounded by trees with a single opening I named sanctuary. I tried to like civ 5, but it’s not the same as 4 in a lot of ways, I think I’m going to redownload that game.

I started in Civ 1 back in the 90’s and was instantly hooked. Played all of them as they came out except for 4. I didn’t have a PC that was able to run it, and once I did upgrade hardware 5 was out. This game is still on of my favorites to date. Never playing the same game twice is awesome. I love coming up with different play styles and “role playing” as the leader. Take over the world? Play as an isolationist? Be the protector and only start wars against aggressors. One of the only changes over the years that I didn’t like was how focused you have (have is to strong of a word) to become to go for different victories. I miss the days of adapting as I go and choosing my winning path in the late game. I feel now as if you have to pick your general focus the moment you settle your first city. The addition of resources of the years has been one of my favorite additions to the game, not to mention all the quality of life interface changes. I like the added level of trade that it offers. I like how it effects your land grab city placement in the early stages, and I like how the resources give you a goal for limited wars. I’m looking forward to see what happens to this franchise in the future.

    • Only played Revolution. I’m pretty bad at it, but it’s fun.

      • I started on Civ 3 as well and exploited the cheat you mentioned with a vengeance. Lol. It was always fun rolling up to spearmen with tanks and mech infantry.
