This guide is intended for players who are either new to the game, mods, or guardians who would like to get a second opinion on them. It's also intended for those players who often keep their glimmer at max capacity when it may be hurting them to do so.
The Short and Simple: When maxed out, use about 3/4 of your glimmer to purchase blue mods from Banshee-44 in the tower, every 3 blues that are alike can be turned into a legendary mod. You will be able to stockpile, then pick & choose which mods suit your play style the most. Why 3/4? It's arbitrary, but I feel it leaves room of infusions, shaders & other reasons to keep some in your pocket.
The Detail: If you have the Curse of Osiris DLC, you may have noticed a significant increase in glimmer gains from all events & activities as opposed to vanilla Destiny 2. I tend to hit Max glimmer every 6-12 hours of game play, up from 20-24 during vanilla. If you're maxed on glimmer & are not sure what to do with it, your best bet is to spend 50-75% of that glimmer on blue mods from Banshee-44.
The blue mods he drops can convert into legendary mods if you have a stack of 3, and these converted legendary mods can stack. This means you can stockpile useful mods for the future, and potentially never have to worry about them again (unless the system is completely changed, but I wouldn't bet on it).
Vault space is being addressed in the upcoming January update, but for now if you require more space, I recommend deleting elemental mods on the sub classes you use the least. You may also delete Mods you feel you're not going to need, ones that don't suit your play style. For example: I don't keep my heavy weapon handling chest mods because I feel my kinetic recoil reduction will always be far more useful.
Some mods are far more rare than others, you'll find out which ones as time goes on. For example: The energy counterbalance mod for Titan legs is exceedingly rare (only gotten one, whereas other mods of mine have stacks in the double digits). Paired with the arms energy counterbalance mod, it makes for overpowered energy weapons in PvP (dependent on player skill of course).
Hard to get mods: One way to combat the rarity of some mods is to wait for Banshee to sell them outright, they cost 5 materials a piece which means you'll need to keep some mod materials and wait for him to stock the right ones. For example: I kept about 40 mod components and waited for him to sell legendary kinetic damage mods so I could scoop 8 of them up at once. A big thank you to guardian Googlebright in the comments for reminding me of this point.

That's what I do as well. Gunsmith mods are the only glimmer sink in the game. I dismantle the elemental grenade or melee recharge ones since the Paragon mods cover both. This keeps me in constant supply of mod components in case I need to buy a kinetic mod from Banshee.
