Loot boxes, crates, crowns, packs, gambits; Whatever you wanna call them is indeed a problem and for one I hate them.
This all started with EA and now it's hitting Bungie but the thing is this shouldn't be a single attack against a gaming company but rather it should be aimed at the gaming industry as a whole. I don't see why players of other games that have similar things like ESO or even Halo gets a pass in terms of not making the news but only Bungie.
The only two issue with Bungie I have in regards to the loot boxes is the fire team medallion and the lack of outright buying anything in the store for bright dust as the rest are all cosmetics.
All of the cosmetic things that Eververse provides should be allowed to be bought outright with reasonable bright dust costs and the fire team medallion should be sold with glimmer or any other in-game currency that can't be bought with real life money.
Loot boxes in general I have yet to see anything that ties in more loot box sales = more development or faster development which is another problem I have with it as it seems to only benefit shareholders of the company who publishes the game rather than the gaming company who develops it in general. In that retrospect one company that does stand out is Halo 343i that has claimed that the proceeds go to funding their Halo Tournament which if that is entirely the case then that gets a pass in my eyes.
TL;DR
There's too much selective outrage with Bungies' loot boxes when this issue should be a issue with the gaming industry as a whole and something we should unite and fight back against. There's been no real data suggesting that loot boxes increases content development (especially free) and as such they should be removed entirely or allow players to outright buy items from the loot box at fair prices.
