The Church, in the realm of which Orion and Marisa originate from, is a theocratic system that maintains a portion of control over the land, through it's righteous justice and seemingly valiant purposes. The Justiciars of the Church are the servants of the pantheon itself, educated within the ways and regulations of the gods and specifically trained to serve out the judgement of the deities and the Church, no matter how cruel the punishment may seem. A Justiciar Acolyte is a servant of the Church whom has recently been promoted to the rank of Justiciar, yet does not hold the authority that a true Justiciar would hold. These Acolytes tend to serve the purposes of the Justiciar (while there are regulations behind this as well: the Church forbids quite a few things in this service). Think of them as religious interns. The trial to become a Justiciar is known as the Great Pilgrimage - this trial, as it could be called, forces a set of Acolytes out of the realm of the Church and onwards, beyond it's holy reach, for a three-year long period.
