Surprise surprise, they're here... they're everywhere! The community is on fire, and the terrible weapon system which us hardcore PvE players warned you guys about back in May at the DRE is now showing the ugly side to you!
So why is everyone only surprised now? Easy, the hype has worn off, and the gameplay has been left to serve itself, and unfortunately the players seem to have a general consensus that it is bland, dull, and outright boring. I'm sure a good majority of you have at least seen Slayerage's discussion on the weapon system and his comment "Just go back to D1" seems to have aggravated some of the current system's more prominent defenders (Glares in the general direction of Lost Sols), but I'm not here to spew out insults, or demands, or complaints. I want to open the floor to some viable feedback points that I'd rather be used to open a general channel of discussion on this topic with the development team.
One of my biggest criticisms I gave last week is that Bungie is suffering from a lack of understanding as it pertains to the community feedback, so I'm giving them an opportunity here to show them that they are indeed listening and can actually take some feedback and turn it into results for a change.
Why is the change needed
So obviously, the two primary system is failing the game as it pertains to PvE. Boss fights are dull and extended, power ammo drops are too inconsistent, and weapon classes that were the pride and joy of loadout diversity are now collecting dust because let's be honest, we all told you rockets would still be the only viable choice. In PvP, the lack of any powerful tools that are common degenerated the crucible into this boring as heck teamshot meta that will be the permanents aspect of the game, regardless of sandbox tuning or adjustments. Masterwork weapons you then tell me? Great! I'll just drop a few extra orbs here for you that you can then use to get away from this for all of a few seconds before you go back to tickling the boss.
The point to be made here is that the current loadouts are boring, dull, and let's be honest, completely unnecessary! There was no reason to change it, ammo economy of special ammo in PvP could have become situational by making the crates only give ammo to the one player who picked it up, or by adding competitive modes with no special ammo, you didn't have to neuter an entire class of weaponry because of PvP, which has also been a repetitive feedback point.
Ideas to improve
So I'm going to present two system change ideas here to how to fix the weapon system and a weapon mod system change, and judging by how the vocal the community has been over the past month or so regarding this topic, I'd highly advise you get on board with something and soon. As with all of my other topics, I'd love for some feedback from the community here as well, so pitch in if you have some ideas here as well.
For the weapon system, one of the two changes should be done:
1. Revert Completely
The easiest suggestion is echoing Slayerage, just revert back to D1. Move all energy weapons to the primary slot, and make elemental primaries a thing again, give snipers, shotguns, fusions to the special slot, and leave the rest as heavy. Adjust the damage for PvE, implement one of my suggestions regarding ammo in PvP above and you're golden for the rest of D2.
2. Adapt a "Division/Borderlands" system
Replace primary/special/heavy ammo with ammo blocks related to weapon types (IE: Auto Rifle Ammo, Sniper Ammo) and then create a weapon system which allows players to equip three weapons of their choice regardless of slot, or, one fixed weapon (Primary) and two non-fixed weapons. This is more of a long-shot system, but it allows players to have the ultimate level of flexibility when it comes to their arsenal choices.
For weapon mods, adapt exactly what The Division does. Introduce mod slots for weapon attachments, IE: Magazine, Barrel, Scope, and Grip. Give these mods specific perk bonuses which players can attach to their weapon and you'll be in great shape. Adding this system to the game would make the fixed rolls ok, because then you can use mods to add additional perks based on the type of weapon you want to build from a base. It's more extensive and again, allows for player choice which is the key proponent of this feedback.
One way or another, we know that Bungie is going to have to act on this feedback, it's been a very vocal point of the community since the reveal event, and it's not going to stop until action is done.
To finish, I'm going to bring back a quote from our currently non-present community manager Cozmo back when a poll was ran prior to the launch of D2. In this poll a near 50/50 split was present between players who wanted the system left alone, and players who wanted the new D2 system. Cozmo stated that a general split was seen and that this did not show that there was a problem with their ideology. Unfortunately, this is a terrible way to look at it, because half of the playerbase effectively did not want the change, that's a substantial loss a players there, and I feel that this is one of the reasons why D2 is not doing well right now.
Something needs to be done, and soon. Let's talk and get the higher ups involved for a change!
