Don't normally care for these posts but I'm in a similar boat with regards to my grimoire and interest level. I still love what this franchise *could* be, but I doubt it ever will truly blossom. Just looking at the number of hate posts in response tells me all I need to know, because they're exactly who Bungie pandered to and the game is suffering for it - filthy casuals who couldn't care less 1 way or the other. And that's why you don't pander to them. It's OK, smart even, to make your game more accessible for a wider audience but not if that means sacrificing core mechanics and content, like how they intentionally lowered the skill ceiling for PvP and simply hand out "eng game" drops just for being in a clan. When you dumb your game down like that, nobody wins. I really, really hate how gaming has gone mainstream. Back when I was kid and it was considered "nerdy" developers still actually cared about putting out quality, FINISHED products. Now it's all about scamming the masses into getting as many pre-orders as possible and teasing people with potential fixes via paid DLC.

  • Tbf in the past there were also a lot of BS in the industry, movie tie-ends games that usually were garbage, sub-par games, hell the oversaturation of the medium by atari that caused the crash, if anything we are getting the same BS just in diferent flavor.

I'm referring to the post-crash era though, starting with the NES. 1st game I ever played was Mega Man 2 when I was about 7 or 8. My main point though, was that too many developers these days care more about their bottom line than their creative integrity and putting out a quality product. Ironically, Blizzard has no problems at all even though they are largely owned by Activision - Bungie is only partnered via a 10-year contract, and yet they sold their soul. What the hell? When I think back to my teens, and again citing Blizzard, I often think of Diablo 2 as a pinnacle example of great design (well, mostly - LoD did F up a lot of things lol). The game was gritty, had what I deem to be still one of if not THE best intro cinematic to a game EVER, tonnes of replayability and a great story. Plus the manual had a lot of cool concept art and lore in it as well (not as much as D1's did but still a good chunk). Actually, that's something else I miss - games coming with manuals that actually explained stuff and if you were lucky, had art, lore and maybe an easter egg or 2.

  • Imo it was a diferent time back then, i love the megaman games but lets be honest megaman was always 6 or more robot masters, then 3 sigma or willy stages, boss gauntlet and final boss, and that was the formula for like 15 or more years in megaman and megaman X. Making games was always about money it just now that companies are pushing more for their "games as a service" BS because of the online connectivity and that its due to some companies being extremely successful with similar methods, blizzard being a prime example, their games are classics but they have tons of DLC, expansions, micros, subscriptions, lootboxes, etc and companies in their short sightedness copy them, like the boom of the military FPS when CoD make truckloads of money. I do miss the physical goodies in the cases, heck i preffer discs instead of digital but its a shame that today most games bring the discs and nothing more, i despise the Swich games boxes because its like a whole case for a tiny SD card, what a waste.

  • Grest post 👍. I also remeber when console or pc gaming was considered nerdy and almost taboo. I feel the same way.
