Frist, What is changing in D2:
1. Weapon system simplify (hated)
2. Skill tree system simplify (hated)
3. 6V6, 3V3, 2V2 PVP -> 4V4 PVP (hated)
4. Strike simplify (hated)
5. Better public event (enjoyed)
6. Better map(not really important to me)
What is the new content in D2:
1. Looting/lost sector (meaningless)
2. Taken system(meaningless and hated)
3. new class(I don't think people like those new class)
If D1 had another DLC called "red legend" with the new story in D2, new weapon release, I don't see there is a problem for 20 dollar DLC.
Further, if we apply those changes and new content as a DLC into D1, what could be happened?
I will say people will still hate/rage or whatever on those change. But at least they will not lose their progress in D1. Like, your pet a cutty cat for 3 years, and one day it began to bite you every day, will you throw it into a trash can? No, because you still have some good memories left.
We might lose some players but not so many because we have our progress preserved and we don't want to abandon it. Just like what I did to MapleStory, I know it is stupid to play, but sometimes I just want to go back to pick up some memory and there are new updates I can play using my powerful character.
Then we got D2. We lose all our progress in D1, we hate the game, and we have no reason to stay. Going back to D1, basically we know the game has been abandon and who knows when Bungie will shut down the server, so we are afraid of wasting our time on it.
D2? nothing to do so far.
Then bungie lose most players.
