Summary (TLDR)
A feature which I feel would add value into the game would be somewhere to try out new weapons and gear in the tower, like a shooting range.
UNNECESSARY WAFFLE
The tower is a wonderful source of loot. From my main boi the postmaster, to Cayde-6, there is always some npc willing to give you legendary gear. While bag space isn't an issue, I like to roll with a "just the essentails" backpack. So there have been numerous occasions where I have similar weapons competing for the same gear slot such as a tried and trusted autorifle vs a new pulse rifle of the same powerlevel (for arguments sake, both kinetic). Really these weapons need to be tested to workout which is best, but to do that, you would have to leave the tower, shoot some unfortunate Vex chumps (or similar) dismantle the lesser of the items, then go through the loading screens and the long tower wait times to redeem the gunsmith tokens.
Similarly after failing the nightfall, my fireteam often heads back to the tower to decrypt new engrams, equip different exotics to find a more effective combination, and to concealing our shame under new shiny shaders. It would be kind of useful to unload a few clips on some nightfall difficulty training dummies to identify which item combination has the most effective DPS without having to waste precious time in the nightfall due to the ever changing modifiers. Which while really cool, they require a different play style to the normal activities such as flash-points, which don't offer a good comparison as a result
Personally if there is a region in the tower where you can try out gear without needing to return to orbit or changing planets would be really useful and could make some aspects of the game a little more streamlined.

I never understood why we didny get dummies in this serie. Having to travel and shoot ennemies to test out the dmg output of our weapons is not efficient.
