Well I think people have forgotten vanilla destiny. So we’ll go from what I can remember as a day one and beta player:
One raid.
No hard mode or challenges period
No way to earn exotics but said raid and extreme luck rng
No trials. No competition level pvp in general
No events, eververse, or other means to get any vanity items
Extreme weapon imbalance. Extreme class imbalance.
I think the destiny most people on the forums remember was taken king or newer. They’ve yet to give destiny 2 the chance to really set in. Let’s be honest people the prestige rewards are not what you’re mad about. It’s a change and most people don’t like change.
D2 had a great story with memorable characters. Adventures and quests that I’m sure most people haven’t completed on three toons, a challenging night fall. And a raid. And dlc less than two months away and the promise of seasons and an event. And it’s only a month old. As a day one destiny player this is light years better than the content droughts of d1

I remember vanilla D1 but for me the story isn’t “great”. It may seem that way compared to D1 because D1 has no story at all. Characters aren’t that memorable either but at least they talk more I guess. I see what some are saying about development and how in time we will get the good stuff back. For me, I can’t go along for the ride no more. As far as I know it could take 2-3 years before D2 is where it should be. That’s even more money out of my pocket. Hopefully when they had things like strike specific loot, heroic strikes, strike scoring, etc etc it will be in a free update and not held behind a paid expansion. If so I can see myself returning for some fun but other than that, no thank you.

Right? As a day one player my self hailing all the way from the 360 I also believe people have forgotten what the true original destiny looked like.

Biggest scam in the history of gaming...
-
This is true, but Destiny is supposed to be an evolving series. We should not have to revert to a year one style game, and it finally be fully completed in the next TTK style expansion. (If there is one)

I certainly haven't forgotten vanilla Destiny & how disappointed many were from it. I would think that Bungie also would have remembered it as well. I thought they would have remembered the steps they took to improve upon it, and make up for its flaws. Vanilla Destiny was released in 2014, Destiny 2 in 2017. It's been three years but the same problems are persisting again. Yes the story did improve, but the motivation to play is drying up. It's odd that none of the improvements that we had at the end of D1 are in D2. Yes it seems as now they are potentially slowly being implemented. But they should have been there from the start in my humble opinion. But to each his own. Let us all see how this story unfolds.
One raid.
Yep.
No hard mode or challenges period
We had multiple difficulties day one, which resulted in a faster grind from story missions, but they were a one-and-done deal and based on level instead of light. Daily story missions picked up the slack there, which is now replaced by Ikora's Meditations. Strikes followed suit, starting at lv8, all the way up to lv20, will all difficulties available at lv20. Bounties were part of vanilla, but you could only take 5 out of a set of 12 at a time(6 vanguard, 6 crucible) until you completed those, and refreshed every 12 hours. Challenges replaced that.
No way to earn exotics but said raid and extreme luck rng
Exotic bounties were a thing. Thorn, Bad Juju, Pocket infinity, just to name a few, were all acquired from these. Now armor, on the other hand, I don't remember any bounties for. D2 now hands you a couple exotics during the story, and has some exotic bounties of its own.
No trials. No competition level pvp in general
Yep. Vehicles were also a thing back then. Mostly sparrows and interceptors are what I remember, but the pikes wouldn't be out of place.
No events, eververse, or other means to get any vanity items
Because they were already handled by the Shipwright for sparrows and ships, Eva Levante for emblems and shaders, and the speaker for class items and more emblems. Lets also not forget about the ships, sparrows, emblems and shaders that dropped from strikes, patrol and gold (region) chests, crucible, and the raid. Emotes weren't a thing until Eververse was... and vice-versa.
Extreme weapon imbalance. Extreme class imbalance.
The Vex Mythoclast was a clear example of weapon imbalance. The nerf after day the Suros was sold by Xur and everyone brought it to the crucible was not. I will agree that a lot of rebalancing happened in vanilla. Also, the Mythoclast was classified as a fusion rifle.(heh) The classes were definitely not balanced against each other, but personally I didn't have a big problem with it, because they all had something to bring to the table, though the difference between having something and not was massive. It was almost as if they deliberately left the supers, at least, unbalanced so they could feel super.
I think the destiny most people on the forums remember was taken king or newer. They’ve yet to give destiny 2 the chance to really set in. Let’s be honest people the prestige rewards are not what you’re mad about. It’s a change and most people don’t like change.
Regardless of when you started, we're still going from D1 Y3 to something closer to D1 day 1, and not just due to the amount of content. That's not good, no matter how you slice it. It's the fact that there is no upgrade in gear that everyone was upset at the prestige raid. All the way up until D2 raids and hard mode raids were the only way to get max light, with nightfalls as a small boost. Now all I have to do is wait for RNG to get me to max through clan engrams, I barely need to play anymore. That's what disembowels the rewards from the raid and prestige of either kind. Nightfall is still where it's been, I think.
D2 had a great story with memorable characters.
Because writing a story better than D1 was so hard. Seriously, all of D1's "story" was making a setting that wasn't taken advantage of until the dark below, and moreso by TTK. Much of what TTK did, in terms of character building, was used for D2's story. At least D2 tried to tell a story. A far better one would be one where they destroyed the traveler outright, and this one could've been improved just by putting more emphasis on that the shard we find is corrupted. I expected better, but you do you if you liked what was given.
Adventures and quests that I’m sure most people haven’t completed on three toons, a challenging night fall. And a raid.
Why would people do anything 3 times if they didn't enjoy it the first time, assuming they thought it was worth trying at all(coughprestigeraidcough)? If you want me to play the same thing three times over, make it worth creating a second character for. The adventures are kinda nice, but there's not a good reason to play them once you've overleveled them, which is really easy. The nightfall and raid have their own difficulty and replayability, though perhaps not in the way some people wanted.
And dlc less than two months away and the promise of seasons and an event. And it’s only a month old. As a day one destiny player this is light years better than the content droughts of d1
They didn't really say anything about future plans until a month and a half out, at Twitchcon. Everything we've known up until then was said before release. I'm not sure this was better than vanilla D1, but still better than nothing. D1 had some issues. D2 day 1 is better tha D1 day 1, but marginally. Less content (like strikes, raids) we expected, but all this other junk we thought was fixed over D1's lifespan, or was a part of D1 that we thought would be carried over. Yeah, we thought wrong, but were we so wrong for thinking that way? I don't think so.

Everything can be looked at in retrospect and be comparative. The simple fact of the matter is that while destiny 1 appealed to an audience, it failed to keep the casual player. Most people in the gamer demographic cannot or simply will not grind a game. In turn they feel a sense of loss because they’ll never achieve something someone like you me can because of time constraints. And let’s face it, this is a money making market and they’re gonna try to include every potential buyer. The devs have said multiple times that it’s simply not possible to pump out the level of content needed to keep the hardcore sustained. Frankly I don’t think they expect or want people to be on this game 24/7. And it’s unfair to bash a dev because of something that’s pretty dam close to impossible. Believe me, the end game needs a shot of something to make it alluring to the hardcore who’s already beaten everything. Or maybe put it down, play some cod or Wolfe stein or whatever. I have 3000 hours in destiny 1 believe me I’ve had to change my thought process on this game. But I also remember that this franchise is the only one I’ve truly put a good chunk of my life into, so for me I’m willing to give them sanctuary to at least fix the few things wrong and continue keeping my favorite series alive.

Edited by blade329: 10/23/2017 12:08:25 AM
D2 had a great story with memorable characters
Are you seriously going to tell me that you gave a rats ass about The Speaker dying? Was Hawthorne a memorable character? Other than Cayde-6, I couldn't care less about any of them. Well, maybe Failsafe.....sort of. Heck, I don't even care about my own characters. They don't talk, they don't interact, they have no emotion, no personality, etc. They are just hollow shells to me. Great story? It was decent at best. Ultra simplistic, if you ask me. Besides, they had three years to work on this, so I amazed how little they have progressed in that time. It's a step backwards.
-
It seems post like these are common. And yet, story was a major driving factor on why people hated on destiny 1. If you didn’t give a rats ass about the speaker then, you won’t now. Fair enough. But then you have no say in what story is compelling and what isn’t because you’re clearly not invested in the lore. I, for one, enjoy the destiny universe and with youtubers like myelin and my name is byf bringing fan fiction to life it’s far more engaging than most one dimensional mediocre shooters that are pumped out by other companies. Further, I think people are hating destiny right now because it’s trendy. Because they’re mad an emblem isn’t purple in their inventory slot. And because they can’t be a special snowflake with a one of a kind weapon that literally anyone that could do a raid could also attain. At the end of the day, if you don’t like destiny, then don’t like it. This is America.

Edited by blade329: 10/23/2017 1:27:43 AMWell, the story in D2 isn't bad, but I think people were just expecting more. Much more. Actually I was invested in the lore, but they decided to omit, change or ignore things that I was interested in. The Darkness and the Exo Stranger for starters. Heck, even Efrideet or all reference to us being an Iron Lord is gone. It's easy to see why players are not happy. I loved Destiny 1. I played it for months and months. One of the best games I ever played. Sure, it had flaws and needed some changes. I thought, and I'm not alone, that Destiny was going to progress to the next level and begin to be the epic that it should be. Instead, it's a lazy half-assed step backwards, taking away more than gives back. So, yeah, I don't like it because my expectations were very high. Most of the people that are going to really like this game are first time players and low expectation fan boys who will defend anything that Bungie does. I mean, seriously, the competitive PvP players are hailing the game simply for the fact that they won't get ability spammed to death in it. You can't get any more low expectation than that. Yes, it's just my opinion. If you like the game, great, enjoy it. I envy you. I wish I could like it. I really wanted to.
This is Earth.
Fix'd, since this is an international game with an international community. Solid post.

D1 had things to grind for! The hard mode Leviathan is for Cosmetics and nothing else. You ant compre Vanilla D1 to Vanilla D1 because D2 should be an IMPROVEMENT from Y3 D1...
-
"D1 to Vanilla D1 because D2 should be an IMPROVEMENT from Y3 D1" Because that's how game development works.
-
It is. Sequels aren't supposed to be 2 steps forward 30 steps back
-
Yup case closed, you have no clue.
-
Whatever you say.
-
In the meantime go and research how long games like Destiny take to develop, make sure you don't hurt yourself either.
-
Nothing to do with how long a game takes to develop. A sequel shouldn't be goin backwards. You take what you have and improve on it, make it better. But I km done arguing with idiots. Cya kiddo you're muted now
-
Nothing to do with how long a game takes to develop.

But I km done arguing with idiots.
Irony.
-
Destiny 1 had incentive, Destiny 2 does not. Destiny 1 was super lackluster in content, but you could grind out strikes and crucible for the weapon rolls, which is replayability. Destiny 2 has the content going for it, but no replayability. As for the three character argument that everyone like to bring up - replaying a campaign and doing the same things on multiple characters does not equal content lol. You play the same missions, in the same zones as the time before turning in the same tokens for the same gear, doing the same exotic missions for the same exotics. The only thing that changes is my fire sword is now a fire gun. Yay content.
-
You're forgetting how much hate there was towards that grind, people bitched it was a trap used to hide the lack of content. The forever 27/28/29 was real, the invalidation of gear before infusing was a nightmare, new currencies too often with too specific uses that forced an endless grind was attrocious. These werent things to celebrate and they were things that the community loathed. That's why it changed every DLC until TTk, because it -blam!-ing sucked. I would honestly love to see a double blind test where two people who have never even heard of Destiny were forced to play both vanilla versions. It would have to be out of order. So specimen 1 plays D2 first, then D1 and specimen 2 plays D1 fisrt, then d2.
-
Nobody, not a single buyer, wanted a Destiny 1 day 1 remake. Destiny 2 is not a continuation, it is not an integral part of a 10 year project. It is the second three year project from Bungie in 4 year. And it is the lesser game because they had all of Destiny 1 to use as a foundation, but they tossed all that aside.
-
I actually didn’t mind D1 in the beginning. All the way up until HoW I enjoyed it. I started a month or so after the game dropped though. I don’t like stuff handed to me. It actually felt rewarding to put time into destiny in the first year it was out. Exotics were badass and hard to obtain. I prefer that over mediocre(at best) exotics that are so easy to get it’s insane. I also liked that the only way to reach max level was through the raid. It was nice that they added in max gear to IB as well bc they were only giving out 2 pieces of gear each IB. Other than that and the NF, I don’t believe max gear should be handed out unless it’s an exotic. Why do I want to get on a game that just gives me the same weapons and armor over and over again? It doesn’t make any sense to me. And it’s all mediocre. Our abilities are mediocre. Everything about the game is mediocre. I will keep my copy of the game and maybe login every once in a while until the dlc drops and I see what everyone is saying about it. If changes aren’t made then I will be 100% done.
