We absolutely can compare the two because this game is supposed to be a continuation of the first one.
Where are all the improvements and great features from Destiny 1? Let’s list them, shall we?
Quest Log - Gone.
Sparrow and Ship Kiosks - Gone
Shaders? - Better save up that sweet, sweet digital currency if you wanna look even remotely cool.
Grimoire/Score - Who cared about the world-building anyways?
Randomized Rolls - Before, if you could find yourself a crappy gun with really good perks, it was completely viable. Now, if a gun has bad perks, then it’s just plain bad, and nothing will ever change that.
Heroic Strike Playlist - Gone
Prestige Raid Loot - Nonexistent. No new weapon or armor designs... It doesn’t even drop higher light gear! Even Vault of Glass dropped higher stuff back then! As of right now, there is absolutely NO incentive to do the Prestige Raid.
Legendary Ornaments - All gone
Complex Subclass Builds - Gone
Strange Coins? - nope
What about Discipline, Strength, and Intellect? Those are all gone, and armor only provides a couple of different bonuses, which have almost zero effect in-game.
I mean, what does mobility even do? Make you jump slightly higher? How can you compare that to a stat that makes you recharge your abilities way faster? And yes, I do realize that these ‘paragon’ armor mods are supposed to be the substitute for this, but without a visual representation, it’s completely meaningless. Even with five Arc Paragon Mods installed on all my armor pieces, it still feels like I have to wait forever for anything to charge.
Armor is all pretty much completely cosmetic, save for Exotics, which brings me to my next point; why on Earth are most of these exotics just standard class and armor abilities ripped from Destiny 1? The Winged Warlock chestpiece is just the Angel of Light perk, and the Mechaneer’s Tricksleeves’ exotic perk is just to allow you to reload sidearms faster!
That’s a perk you would find on normal legendary armor in the first game! Not to mention half the exotic weapons in this game are either from Destiny 1, or just plain boring.
Look, these are just my personal gripes with the game. If you enjoy playing it, then that’s completely fine, good for you. I’m not trying to deter you from having a good time with it.
I know Destiny 2 will get better, it’s the only reason I still have it installed as of now, to see what improvements Bungie implements.
But that is NOT how it should be. Over time, improvements came that made Destiny an overall great experience. So where are they in this game?
There were plenty of great decisions made with this game, but for a Day One veteran such as myself, the bad definitely outweighs the good.
