Destiny 2 - Shelved; My Final Thoughts

Thanks for reading my thread. Let me first start off by saying, that I have sifted through the toxicity of these forums for what will mark 10-Years in the coming months. Things never used to be as bad as they are now, but expectations and entitlement have pushed people to new lows, so take what you read ahead to your own liking, it is merely my insight, analysis, and opinions.. EDIT NOTE #1: Thank you all for your words, wisdom, input, and thoughts. I appreciate the time and effort you've put into both taking the time to read my thread, and reply, good and bad. Didn't know this thread would take off the way it did. EDIT NOTE #2: Perhaps some of you misunderstand, I'm not permanently quitting, I am shelving the game until things are fixed, preferably in the near future, or unless my friends message me to help them in activities. To those giving me the obligatory "Git Gud in D2", I have a 2.0~ K/D Ratio in both games, and I only Solo Queue unless my friends need help, thank you. This topic will culminate my final thoughts of Destiny 2, why I'm going back to Destiny 1, and why it is not only the biggest letdown I've ever had to my gaming history, but to why it is also a lifeless shadow/shell of Destiny 1. The game will now sit in my game room, as of tonight, as a collectors item, and nothing more. The only time I will play it now, is if somebody on my friends list personally wants/needs my help. Let's begin. I decided to log into Destiny 1 tonight and play 5 games of Crucible. I cannot even begin to explain how much better Destiny 1 not only feels after playing Destiny 2, but how it handles, and how much stronger, faster, and less held-back you feel. I felt like a god jumping into Control and quite literally slaughtering the enemy team single-handed. I had more fun again than I could put into words. Then I remembered Destiny 2 was a thing again. Bungie has literally watered down everything we ever loved about Destiny, in Destiny 2. Everything feels weaker, everything feels slower, everything feels forced. The truth of the matter is, while processing the hype, taking in the story-line (something we can all agree was better than Destiny 1's) and going through it all, many began to fathom the realization that there is essentially no end-game, no reason to grind after a certain period of time. I even deleted my Titan to make a second Warlock and ran through the Campaign, again... Then deleted my Hunter and lost motivation entirely after I created him again. I often find myself sitting in orbit thinking of SOMETHING to do to have fun in this game. Destiny 2 eliminates any sense of individuality that the first game presented, and instead tries to force us to cope with relying on people we don't even know, which in turn causes frustration. Bungie has essentially weakened everything to the point where it FORCES teamwork in order to even get through a casual Crucible match. Abilities take far too long to recharge (Even with EVERY piece of armor having the "Abilities recharge quicker when using <Subclass>", Supers take far too long to get, and feel significantly weaker now, due to energy weapons doing 1.5x damage to someone in their super (Honestly, who thought this was a good idea, especially since you essentially only get ONE super per game now, I could see it being viable if it was like D1, where you could get 3-4 supers per match). A lone guardian can now take someone out of their super with an energy auto rifle faster than if they didn't have their super active. That's extremely backwards, considering a super not only takes ages to charge, but is supposed to be...Well, Super. A not so-super choice, Bungie. PvE has almost nothing going for it when you bridge your power level at around 280, apart from the Raid - But wait, that essentially has nothing going for it either besides the smallest bit of vanity. Why do I say that you ask? The weapons have near-nothing special about them besides appearance, which brings me to the biggest problem this game faces: Fixed Rolls / Stats. Many assumed this would be a good thing, many assumed a bad thing. I've stuck with the bad, and for good reason(s). Fixed rolls have made this game extremely stale. Customization and Play-style have both been hindered and extremely limited by this simple thing. If you want specific traits (Resilience, Mobility, Recovery) you have to give up customization almost completely to get the stats you want. Not only that, but having fixed rolls / stats also has removed 95% of replayability. By removing rolls on weapons / armor, you've essentially removed almost any need to continue playing after you reach 305. Destiny 1 had it right; 3 Years, and there was still things to go for. Perk rolls made a gun or armor have dozens and dozens of possibilities; Dozens! You could essentially customize your ENTIRE playstyle, both gameplay and vanity wise. Like that armor? Get it to drop with the right stats you want and you could wear it doing whatever you pleased. Like that gun, but it has bad stats? No problem, get the right perks on it and you could fix / balance the stats out and make the gun usable and fit your play style needs. These things don't exist in Destiny 2. Bungie, you've essentially limited everything we're able to do, mainly for the sake of player-vs-player. Individuality in PvP is nearly gone, and you're forcing teamwork. Customization has been limited to the point where we have to sacrifice nice looking armor or weapons in order to obtain optimal gear for activities, due to perks and stats being fixed, Everything feels exponentially weaker, especially in PvP, everything is too slow paced, and you can essentially walk away from 1v1's if you're losing. I want to feel like I'm shooting more than a marshmallow gun at my enemies. PvE has non-existent replay value after you've completed the campaign / adventures, apart from Public Events, which is only used for farming exotics at this point, what little exotics there are. I mean, at this point, I have essentially almost every single legendary in the game vaulted right now, it's ridiculous. Also, Exotics feels extremely...Not-Exotic in this game. Even after Three of Coins became a thing in Destiny 1, atleast exotics felt superior over legendary gear. Not so much in this game. Things need to seriously change in this game, Bungie. I want to love this game, I really do, but...I just can't, not right now. According to logs, players are leaving this game faster than I've ever seen. Things needs to feel stronger, we need to feel less held-back, we need incentive to keep playing; Stuff to work for, stuff to grind for, stuff to desire. I'll end with saying this: Pop Destiny 1 back in your Xbox / Playstation, give it a try again for a day. I promise you won't regret it, I'm even deleting a character and starting anew. Final Note: ALL the Playstation Exclusives are now available on Xbox on Destiny 1. Thanks for reading my thoughts. Remember, this is all opinion / insight. You'll know where to find me; On the game I love.

  • Played D1 recently ... My Voidwalker was once again a life-force siphoning vampire with scatter grenades galore, Nirwin's Mercy loaded up, his beloved "Each New Day" glued to his hands, and a backtalking machine gun (aka Super Good Advice) slung over his shoulder. D2 has some good things going (fast travel, public events marked, etc.) But it's not as much *fun* as D1. Now we are back to 3 strikes, fixed loadouts for abilities and weapons.

    • Yes, other than patrol destiny feels flat and lacking in exciting moments, especially in PvP which is now team shoot or die, and please exotics should be cool not boring, remember Thorn? Yes it was a pain but everyone wanted one, well until they nerfed it

      • We bought D1 and instantly recognize it wasn't the game we thought. We all stuck around, built a community, communicated to Bungie what we wanted to see. We were patient and appreciative of their hard work and willingness to get the game to a state that we were really enjoying. Was it perfect? No. Was it fun? Hell yes. It transformed into a game that set the framework for a great sequel. But what happened? They went back to the drawing board and literally reworked how the entire game functions. But why? What really bums me out most is that we all had to deal with the growing pains of Destiny 1 for three years. Now, by the way the community looks, we are right back where we were at the start of Destiny 1.

        • I agree to a degree. Current D1 is the culmination of 3 years of updates and expansions. People may tell me I’m wrong but I compare vanilla D1 to vanilla D2. Yes, I understand that Bungie should have theoretically implemented a lot of D1 post-ROI systems into vanilla D2. That would have put vanilla D2 on par with current D1.

        • When you think back to the old cut content scandal during the early days of D1, reading posts like this really make laugh. My point being, it took quite a while for D1 to become the game that most people loved, so why not afford D2 a little bit of time?
Get a grip
• Very well thought out post. I have to disagree one a few things though, -Destiny 2 PvP is objectively more balanced than D1. Sure D1 is more chaotic which could results in the matches being more fun at times, but I honestly prefer the consistency of a more balanced approach like D2 has. -"Fixed" rolls are not a bad idea on its own, in fact, I personally believe it's a better system! Here why; weapons having fixed roll give more of a "personality" kinda of a "what you see is what you get" type of vibe. You like a certain playstyle? Use this specific weapon. Problem is: 1) to justify fixed roll, the loot table should have, as in Cayde's words from the ad, "a ton of loot!" Unfortunately the loot table is lackluster as of now. 2) the mod system is barebones and very poor. Having a mod system that significantly impact the way a certain weapon works, would make said weapon much more "personalized" to your OWN play style. For the rest of your post I mostly agree. End game feels very...well...absent for a lack of a better word. Good post, as a huge Destiny fan, I will stick with D2 because I believe in them and I KNOW the game will evolve into something great. It's just disappointing that we need to wait again.

Things to go for in D1? Not for me. I stopped playing about 2 months after the last update. Stop making D1 sound as the great game THAT WAS NOT.

Bungie did a great job with D1, vanilla all the way to rise of iron. Then.... bungie doesn’t know how to make a sequel. Instead of tweaking EVERYTHING in D1 for D2 and then adding content and ideas on top of that, they simply started over and unfortunately stripped away a lot of content that I assume will be DLC’s. D2 could’ve had vanguard bounties, crucible bounties, factions in a daily basis, gear with more of a variety, weapons with with variety of perks and then built on top of that. Destiny 1 was a grinding ass game, and people loved it. It’s one of the things that make destiny attractive to people. The need to HAVE to get this roll or that roll. There is a huge fan base for a grinding game and destiny did that. Had to grind to level up your armor, to level up your weapons, HAD to run the raid to level up raid armor and raid weapons. Had to go the mars to farm for materials, the whole game was a grind and a lot of people loved it. Then they made it where everything could be purchased, 3oC’s gave exotics like candy. Raiding and doing the nightfall and iron banner was a way to reach max light, that’s how you got there, then they changed that, don’t have to raid, didn’t have to do the nightfall, didn’t even have to run iron banner. Bungie has slowly stripped away the grind and a lot of people, hardcore gamers, not those that simply push buttons lost interest in the game. But it also brought in a lot of people who like get rewards easily. Apparently bungie believes their largest player base wants things handed to them. The evidence speaks for itself. The grind while saying “it’s bullshit we have to grind for materials to level up our weapons or armor” is what have part of the game replay ability. Strikes had meaning, crucible even had meaning, bounties were a way to rank up a faction to that scout rifle or the hand cannon you wanted, then, they took that away as well. I understand that they made the game and then stripped away content so they can call it a dlc, but in doing so they have left us with a hollow game with no meaning. I’m sure by the time Destiny 2 is coming to an end it could be as polished as D1, but that’s probably 2 1/2 Year’s away. Just wish bungie would’ve made vanilla with more things and then came up with MORE stuff to add, instead made a game, and stripped away all of the essentials for DLC’s.

But but but balance was what people wanted in D1 was it not? So in order to make things balanced, things had to be removed, things had to be replaced, perks are standardized, this was what you guys wanted. Next time I suggest be careful for what you wished for because you will continued whine regardless. Please don't bring up Mida, Mida is not OP. I suck at pvp and I do well against people using Mida with other gun options. You people just like to stick with what you're comfortable with and afraid to explore other weapons.

              • I knew what I was feeling while playing destiny2 but I couldn't put it into words properly. You did just that. I mean the sound and the worlds are awesome but everything we do and all our weapons are completely boring!!! I have yet to find one item that has excited me. Maybe it's our fault as a community and bungie was afraid to have anything that was too powerful. I dunno, aside from a major overhaul like taken King in d1 I don't see how they can make this game good. I'll keep playing here and there and keep hoping but this game just does not have the allure of its predecessor, even with how broken that game was at the end. D2 already feels stale. What a shame! :(

              • Couldn't agree more, everything here that you stated I agree with 100% Destiny 1 was and still is IMO a much better game all around. I talked a few clan mates of mind to re-download it and we had a blast playing mayhem clash last week. I really hope Bungie will ATLEAST remove the fixed rolls BS so there will be 1 reason to play 😓

Alone for your 9 years with Bungie i thought i have to read your comment. And what i've read is what many, me included, feel. One can feel your enthusiasm and believe that it should give bungie food for thoughts, when one who's with them for 9 years has something to tell them that's not praise, but critic.
