LMG's are straight up missing.
Back in Destiny 1 LMG's were a pretty big presence, especially in Crucible where we would have people using them as snipers because normal snipers didn't cut it.
But here in Destiny 2 they've been missing since day 1. And I think I might just know why.
They're kind of obsolete. I mean the whole point of an LMG is to suppress enemies and generally make sure you had a VERY good supply of ammo.
But the LMG's in Destiny couldn't really do either. Despite having a big magazine physically, you'd normally have up to 12 to 20 rounds most of the time and you could find Auto-Rifles that would be able to hold WAY more ammo. And there's no suppression mechanic in Destiny or Destiny 2 sooo... yeah.
Now this doesn't mean they could potentially be gone FOREVER. They might make a return. I mean some LMG's actually tie in to some of the lore, which is why we still have exotics from Destiny 1 appearing in D2. So their absence may just be temporary at least until Bungie figures out what to do with them.
Honestly, I hope they bring them back. Even as Kinetic or Elemental weapons. Some rifles, despite their great stats, just don't feel powerful COUGHConspiratorCOUGH where as the LMG's always feel powerful even if you were using a bad one. Simply using them just feels euphoric. But then that beg's the question. Will it still be that way IF AND WHEN Bungie brings them back? Because of course there's a reason for their removal.
I dunno. What do you think?

I miss my "super good advice" from D1, I could spam so much ammo.

Edited by Pheonix: 9/21/2017 5:47:02 PMThe reason LMGs aren't around is because they don't have a gimmick. Every power weapon is a power weapon because it can potentially be a one-shot in certain circumstances. Shotguns/Swords: have to be up close. Snipers: requires headshots and can't be used except in medium or long ranges. Fusion rifles: charge time and limited range. Linear fusion rifles: charge time and requires headshots. Rocket launchers: very limited ammo and easy to avoid. Grenade launchers: limited AOE and tricky to get direct hits. LMGs: ???

Here's my 2 cents. As you say, suppression isn't a thing in Destiny. LMGs were always outshined in PVE by rockets and swords. LMGs were for PVP, because they could do more with the assigned ammo. However, in D2 Bungie, for better or for worse, moved shotguns, fusions, and snipers into the heavy slot. This means that there are now more weapons that can get more than 2 kills per heavy ammo pickup. Therefore they dropped LMGs. Am I happy about this? Not really. I liked how LMGs felt. However, I'm not devastated either, and I hope they'll be coming back.
