"Logan?" Angel asked as she rubbed the sleeping man's shoulders. Logan stirred slightly, so Angel nudged him again. Finally, he cracked his eyes open and raised his head up. The warlock had fallen asleep with his face in a book and a pencil in hand. "Hey, Logan."
"What time is it?..." Logan replied with a slight slur.
"It's almost seven O'clock..." Angel replied. Logan detected some sorrow in her voice, but was not quite ready to process it. "Could... we go for a walk? Just the two of us?..."
"I suppose..." Logan said as he rubbed his face.
"I went ahead and fixed you a cup of coffee..." Angel said before walking away. Logan held onto the mug, but was more worried about her now.
The two people were dressed in casual clothes--tee shirts and pants--instead of their armor, and walked through the quiet streets of the City. The sun had just reached the summit of Felwinter's Peak, and only a handful of people were awake and out. The early hours of the day was extremely different from the world Logan was familiar with.
After several minutes of utter silence, Angel said: "Logan, I'm sorry for yesterday... I was just afraid that, with that kind of power, you might--"
"I know," Logan said calmly. A mutual understanding of fears formed between the two, but neither truly wanted to state it aloud. "I'm not going to put those I'm responsible for in harm's way."
"I know," Angel replied with a smile. Her cheerful demeanor did not last long. "We're not criminals, are we? The City Guard, the Vanguard, we disregarded them and did our own thing."
Logan was hit with shock; he was not expecting that question. "No, we're not criminals. Zavala may not like that we don't play by the rules, but he understands that we do what we do to protect the City; he won't take us in for that."
"That's nice to know..." Angel replied.
The couple took a table outside a café and ordered drinks and their breakfast. Logan sipped on his orange juice, but Angel watched hers slosh around the glass with a trance-like stare. Logan watched her for a moment before reaching out for her hand. "What's bothering you?"
Angel's eyes shifted around, involuntarily trying to avoid Logan's. "Why do you feel that you're responsible for me? Or, anyone?..."
Logan fell back into his chair and clapped his hands in front of his face. Angel saw this and was filled with pity, mixed with guilt. "Do you remember anything before you died?"
"No. Just that I was alone when I woke up... But I did remember you! But that's it..." the woman replied.
"When I was revived, I was drawn back to Chicago--I don't know why, maybe to see it one last time before I devoted my second life to the City--and while I was there, I saw the remains of a meteor that crashed there many centuries before... It was like a new memory was unlocked: I remembered the night I asked you to join me on that mountain--" Logan took a deep breath in. "--to watch a comet go by. It was then that we were... killed by the meteor... Angel, I'm the reason you died; the reason we both died... I've also told you about Dwain and Sophia... After that I spent my time alone so I wasn't responsible for anyone else because I was afraid I would fail them..."
"You're also the reason why we're who we are, Logan... We're saviors, we're 'Protectors'. We have superpowers now. You helped make my wildest dream real," Angel said as she wrapped her fingers around Logan's palm. The man smiled at the thought. "But you haven't answered my question..."
A new life was in Logan's eyes. "I suppose I feel that having you back in my life... and Nick--" he said with disdain. "--'moving' in is a way for me to make up for everything... Maybe so I could forgive myself as well."
A smile spread across Angel's lips, and it seemed that her green eyes shined brighter. "Thank you," she said.
