Protectors of Light Ch. 24: Learning to Fly

As the new sun rose, a torrent of Void Light formed on a secluded area of the Tower, below the massive courtyard. Logan peaked his head through the portal to see that no one was near by, then he waved Angel and Nick to follow. As the Guardians stepped out, they found themselves standing on the very edge of a drop-off not even a Guardian could survive. Angel grabbed Logan's arm with an iron grip as she peered down to see fog drifting along the City skyscrapers that seemed to be miles below. The shifting wind was no calming factor either. "Oh my god... Logan, why are we up here?!" Angel exclaimed as she tried to get as far from the edge as possible. "You got wings right? You should learn to use them," the warlock replied as he held onto the titaness. Angel gave Logan a cold stare, and he gave a not so reassuring smile back. "When you're ready to jump, just say so. I'll hold onto you until then," Logan said as he weaved his fingers with Angel's. Angel looked again, and once again, fear washed over her. Her heart was jumping out of her chest, and she was having a difficult time controlling her breathing. "I don't know about this, Logan..." she said weakly. "I got you. It's whenever you're ready..." Logan said again. "Remember the simulations, Angel," Alice said to the woman. Angel looked at everyone around her, took a deep breath in, then stepped closer to the edge. "There you go. You'll be okay," Logan said. Angel stuck one foot over the edge. "You're goin' to have to let go of my hand. You know that, right?..." the warlock asked. Angel, still gripping Logan's hand, leaned forward. "Angel?... Let go of my-- ANGEL!!" Both plummeted down the side of the Tower, to Nicolas' amusement. Alice and Merlin watched as their Guardians' turned into ant-sized specks that disappeared in the fog. Finally, the frantic screams of terror ceased. "Oh dear..." Alice said. After about two minutes, the two ghosts revived their Guardians' on the ledge they were originally on. Nick had been sharpening a knife he always carried with him, waiting for them to return. Angel tossed her hair out of her face and turned to Logan. "What was that?! Why did we die? My wings worked!" She exclaimed. Logan removed his helmet and looked back. "I told you that you--" "Ah, ah. I should say this..." Alice interjected. Angel turned to her ghost and listened. "The wings would've worked, but we didn't consider the weight of two Guardians. Potentially, you could carry a person with you, but that would require a lot of calculations and control of your wings and jetpack. In the meantime, you should focus on learning to fly by yourself..." "Oh..." Angel mumbled, reluctantly realizing her mistake. She turned back to Logan. "What were you going to say?..." "Probably something that'd get me thrown off this Tower..." the warlock replied. "Aye," Nick said despite that he was not even a part of the conversation. Angel shook her arms, then jumped off of the ledge. Logan watched proudly as her metal wings sprouted from her back and the titaness glided through the air. "It's working!" He exclaimed. Suddenly, a draft of wind slammed Angel against the face of the Tower! A loud thud echoed through the dense air. Logan and Nick flinched. She was knocked unconscious by the impact, then fell to instant death below. When Alice revived the woman, everyone remained silent. Angel waited for the wind to stop blowing as hard this time, then jumped a third time. Her wings worked beautifully, but a random Guardian collided with her and both fell to their deaths. "What in bloody h*** was t'at?" Nick asked. The two Guardians looked up to see warlock thanatonauts jumping from the Tower plaza. "What did you see?" Asked the lead warlock after his student was revived. He clicked his pen, ready to record whatever visions the thanatonaut saw. The warlock that jumped was dumbfounded and blinked repeatedly. "I saw a... a... a bird-man, or something..." The arch-warlock furiously flipped through his notes, equally as confused. "There's been no reports of a 'bird-man' before... Not even from Pujari, and he saw a talking flower..." The student shrugged his shoulders. Angel growled angrily after being revived a third time. "It'll be okay, you'll get it..." Logan said as he kissed Angel's helmet. Angel nodded, but was not wholly convinced. "One more time?" Logan asked. Angel turned to Logan, a menacing scowl on her face, but she jumped again nonetheless. Logan, Nick, Alice and Merlin watched nervously as the titaness extended her wings and started up her jetpack. It worked! Angel was flying, not smoothly, but she was flying! Logan punched the air and cheered. Out of pure excitement, Alice hugged Merlin, who became quite uncomfortable, but she let go after realizing what she did. Angel tipped her wings to the right and began flying back to the Tower where everyone else stood. Logan stuck out his arm and caught Angel and pulled her onto the ledge. They hugged each other as Angel's wings were contracted into her backpack. "I can't believe I did it! I can't believe it!" Angel cheered. Suddenly, a hawk gunship flew down to their location and warmed up its chain gun. "Unidentified aircraft spotted!" Said a robotic voice. The three Guardians and two ghosts watched the ship hover in front of them.
