People aren't very good at viewpoints that aren't their own. Experiences you haven't had, or for whatever reason cannot have are difficult to simulate correctly in our organic supercomputers. We can't throw anything but our personal biases at a given situation, and so the things we say and do and believe about others really say more about ourselves than anything else. But that's no excuse if you aren't a socio or psycho-path. It might be for narcissists if they're not self-aware and working on it. Being stubborn or ignorant should never be a point of pride. You aren't exempt from being judged, and your learned helplessness can only be un-learned by trying. That means studying cultures you aren't personally a part of, learning psychology and diversifying your methods, and in the end, BETTERING yourself because the more you know, the more you can do, and the better decisions you can make. Not doing so is tantamount to hopping into a wheelchair with perfectly functional legs and then asking for disability money because you don't want to use them. It's really telling that white supremacists are afraid of becoming minorities because they're terrified of the way they'll be treated. There's a precedent of oppression for minorities, some opponents of democracy would argue that it's an inevitability of utilitarian systems in general. But it's a hostile and aggressive worst case scenario put forth by hostile and aggressive people that can't possibly think of anything else. They feel cornered because they think the other races all band together as tightly as they do, and the paranoia kicks in. On the other side, maybe some people on the left should take a step back and look at what they're doing and saying. Not necessarily let their guard down, (since the average person underestimating the n[u]a[/u]zi threat in germany was what actually let it go on as long as it did) but maybe just realize that the enemy they face feels just as strongly about their cause as they do, and they also wonder why you don't 'get it'. Nothing turns people off your cause more than acting righteous when part of actually being righteous is letting others speak more highly of your deeds. Children are selfish, they don't yet understand that behind everyone else's eyes, there's a person with the same 1st person perspective and the same basic needs. If you really want to grow up, you have to stop just taking and give back to those with merit. You don't have to love everyone, but you do have to love someone besides yourself, and for the right reasons. Ignorance of humanity is not exemption from being humane.
