About big ben

So i was scrolling through facebook last night and one of my friends posted this up: there's no magic money tree to support those dying on our streets, to help students who can't afford to eat, to help young businesses function, feed starving mothers, fathers and children. but we can muster up a modest "maybe £40m" to restore a clock that i highly doubt anybody in the 21st century relies on to tell the time. the government we didn't vote for holds no care in their hearts for the people in need in this country. the conservative approach is killing the humanity in our society. don't appease the facist tory/republican regime. we will not stand for this. What are your thoughts on this? Edit: i will post my opinion on this matter once we hit trending.

      • Tourism money man. London gets what, 20 million people coming every year? The clock pays for itself. Silly complaint in my mind.

        •
don't appease the facist tory/republican regime. we will not stand for this
My thought is that the term "fascist" gets casually thrown around too much. Anytime a government does something someone does not agree with, "Oh!! That is Fascist!!" These folks need to learn what actual fascism is.

          • Several things. For starters, the conservatives aren't fascist. In fact, they're almost centrist at this point. Fascism is a term used far too lightly. If I'm interpreting this correctly, he's also calling the Tories 'republican'. They're not. I'm surprised he would consider that a negative trait, given how the monarchy sucks up so much public money which could go to the needy. Unless he's referring to the American Republican Party, which is completely irrelevant to his point. Unless Donald Trump is funding Big Ben? And, if he's a Green voter, as I've seen OP say in a reply, then he can drop the pretence of caring about businesses. They're the only party who want 3 day weekends IIRC. Not to mention a 60% 'wealth tax' to completely wipe out anyone's desire to own a successful business. If the greens get in, we'd all be living in agrarian communes. They're 'property-is-theft' communists hiding behind the face of a dying polar bear. It also irks me how he says there are people 'dying on the streets' when we have free healthcare for the most part. Very few people go without treatment if they need it desperately. There's also a large number of food banks, charities, shelters, and aid schemes that make people starving to death a much smaller issue than this lad thinks it is. IMO, Big Ben is worth repairing. If a nation can't afford to keep its seats of power and major tourist attractions in good repair, it's a sorry state of affairs.

              • I'm content to maintain Big Ben. I'm more "amused" by that £1 billion that suddenly apparated to bribe the DUP into propping up the Tories when theres apparently "no magic money tree" 🙄

How much tourism money will Big Ben generate? Also - history, it's not like it's a statue of Robert E. Lee. edit - as an American, I'd be far more outraged over supporting a "Royal Family" (whatever that even means) than paying for repairs on a historical landmark.

                      • Well, to be pragmatic about it, that 40 million maintains Big Ben for how many years or decades, and generates how much in tourism money? When that same 40 million would last what, maybe 3 months at most helping the poor. Apples and oranges really.

I dont think it needs to run but they should keep up with structural maintenance. The thing about a country with many hundreds of years worth of iconic structures and locations is that quite a bit is probably spent on them which would maybe be better spent on improving general quality of life. I dont know of a solution, or who should decide what is worth keeping. perhaps hold votes to allow those who care to have a say in the matter chime in? People are more important than buildings but some things should be preserved for future generations to enjoy too.

                      • As a conservative myself, I think that there is enough money to support people in hard times, at least those who truly need help. The problem is that when the government tries to force people to help each other with "spread the wealth" programs, it reduces the economy's efficiency, and eventually it gets to the point where there truly isn't enough wealth based well-being to go around. I certainly support individuals helping other individuals who need help, but the government cannot solve the problem and forcing people to help others doesn't work; they must do it willingly, of their own accord.

                      • It's ok to disagree with people, but why should anyone act all high-and-mighty because they think they've got it right. Most people who cry fascism don't even know what it is.

                      • What a ridiculous stance. That would be like complaining that the Eiffel tower is being repainted, or the Statue of Liberty is being restored.

                        • The UK has a history of holding on to its imperial height imagery while failing to realise its nation state is rotting from the inside due to mismanagement of gov funds and a culture of draining wealth into London which eventually goes into the hands of a select few.

                        • 40 million is pocket change in the grand scheme of things. Over £50 billion is going towards the building of HS2, a train that will take HALF AN HOUR off the journey from Manchester to London. That's what people should be outraged over. To be fair though, there is a difference between borrowing money for infrastructure, and the cash the government has to spend day-to-day. But they managed to find £1bn to bribe the DUP, so they still have a problem over their priorities.

                          • It's a historical monument and a fairly huge tourist attraction, I can see why the British government would see 40 million as a worthwhile investment.
