Ivan Robert Marko Milat, born December 1944 is an infamous Australian Serial Killer, know for killing tourists that were exploring NSW's bush specially around Belanglo State forest, about 140km (86miles) out of Sydney. He has killed at least 7 people, it is important to note that there are 58 other people who have died in similar ways however he is only suspected of 3 more murders.
Milat's father Stijpan was an immigrant from Yugoslav, an Eastern European country founded after WW1 that now doesn't exist. While in Australia Stijpan Milat (aged 32) met 14 year old Margret who by age 24 had 4 children, the 5th being Ivan Milat in 1944. The couple still continued to have kids however bringing the total number of children to 14. Later the family moved into a large shed with most the children sleeping on the ground. Not much else is known about the family aside from that Stijpan was never around often leaving for work during the morning and coming home late at night.
During September 1992 the decaying bodies of two British Hikers were found by two people orienteering. The bodies were found covered in leaves 30m (100 feet) apart. The bodies were identified as Caroline Clarke and Joanne Walters. Walters had been stabbed 14 times and would've been paralyzed by some of the wounds. Clarke was shot 14 times all in the head and was believed to be used as a target. After the bodies were found a 5 day search was done on the nearby bush and police were satisfied that nothing else would be found.
In October 1993 a human skull was found in a remote area of the forest, police were called and two more bodies were found in the area. The bodies were of Deborah Everist and James Gibson. Gibson had 8 stab wounds and his spine was cut in a way that would cause paralysis. Everist had knife wounds and was beaten.
During November of 1993 a police officer found the skull of Simone Schmidl in a clearing of the forest with clothes nearby matching another backpackers clothes belonging to Anja Habschied. Schidil had 8 or more stab wounds and a cut spine.
Two more bodies belonging to Anja Habschied and her boyfriend Gabor Neugebauer were found later that month in shallow graves 50m (160ft) apart. Habschied had been decapitated and her head was never found. Neugebauer had been shot 6 times from different angles.
The murders had similarities, the spines were commonly cut and the bodies would be posed face down with their hands behind their back with leaves and sticks covering them. All bodies were found near the campsite and the killer spent lots of time with the bodies before and after death. Shell casings matching the same caliber gun were also found at the scenes. Police using this information linked the murders and believed that there were 2 serial killers at work.
Police would later get a call from Paul Onions, a British hitchhiker who while in Australia claimed that a man who picked him up only known as 'Bill' tried to kill him, pulling out rope. Onion then jumped out of the vehicle and was shot at as he ran. Onion is the only known survivor of Milat.
Milat became a suspect early on in the investigation, he was known to be in the area and had committed previous crimes and was charged with abducting to women, these charges were later dropped however. He had also sold his car shortly after bodies of his victims were being found. People who knew Milat were not surprised when police came to interview them, saying that Milat was obsessed with weapons. At this time Onions identified Milat as the person who picked him up.
On May the 22nd 1994 Milat's home was surrounded by 50 heavily armed police officers and was subsequently arrested. During a search on Milat's house a riffle was found matching the same type that would've left the casings mentioned earlier at the scenes. Milat also had clothing and camping equitment belonging to the victims.
On July 1996 Milat was found guilty of 7 murders, and the false imprisonment of Onions. In jail Milat has been beaten and attempted escape, one of the people who was involved in the escape attempt was found in their cell the next day dead. Milat has since had multiple suicide attempts, cut off his own finger with a plastic knife and has even starved himself demanding a playstation. Milat will not leave jail.
Milat's nephew has also since killed someone in a copycat killing however that's something for another post
