We all know that Bungie would rather that their Story/Lore inconsistencies just be ignored and disappear. They've made a habit of this, after all, all throughout Destiny's soon-to-be four years.
One of the best examples is The Stranger.
An absolutely chopped up, mangled storyline with nigh-zero direction or relevance to the Story, and in response to Players wanting an explanation for what/where has she gone (while leaving that whole part of the story open as a huge gaping hole), Bungie answered thus in an interview:
We feel that the Strangers story was fully written out and had come to it's natural, logical conclusion. Looking back at it, we feel that we handled it very well, and in a way that closes out her part in the Destiny story very well.
While there's the obvious and glaring issues with that cheap cop out, doing this in between D1 and D2 only creates many more inconsistencies that I fear Bungie will never even touch on, much less fully explain.
So, lets make a list of current inconsistencies based off of what we know about Destiny 2, shall we?
- If our Ghost is out of the picture due to lack of the Traveler's Light, how the hell can we resurrect?
- Our characters had voices in D1, what the hell happened to those? Acute laryngitis?
- If all of our stuff got nuked, how do we have the weapons we start off with?
- If we meet up with Shaxx in the opening mission, and he specifically let's us rummage through his own personal vault for that first exotic, why is his selection such shit? His vault (apparently) went untouched in the assault, so why can't we get some weapons that are actually useful?
- Why the change to our Supers and abilities? What prevents us from using the space magick that we wielded with lethal supremacy in D1?
- Why can't we just go and visit the Reef or Temple when we get a ship to escape from the onslaught?
- Speaking of... where the hell did the Reef and the Temple go? We know from the reveal that they're not on the map as travel destinations, so where the hell did they go?
- Our Vaults were also at the Reef and the Temple, what happened to those caches of our gear?
- Why the drastic change in how our Guardians move/jump/play? Did we get polio suddenly?
- Why are all the decisions about the game centered around PvP, when only around 20% of the entire game population played the PvP?
- Why was the Traveler silent as we got our asses handed to us? It protected us from all of the "Darkness" races at once, why not now when we're facing extinction yet again?
- Why did I need to go to the Speaker? Aside from the abysmal main story in D1, what was the importance of the Speaker after that?
- If my Ghost is gone, how do I survive that fall off of Gary's battlecruiser?
- Why does Ikora still have the kick-ass Nova Bomb, and I get stuck with throwing purple cottoncandy into the wind?
- Why does Cayde still have a one-shot-kill Golden Gun, and the one I get is nothing more than a water gun filled with urine (and about as effective)?
- Why all of the sudden do my precious Scout Rifles feel like nothing more than a BB gun?
No... I strongly suspect that Bungie will handle all of these inconsistencies in the exact same manner that they handled the Stranger.
They'll ignore them, never address their sudden disappearance/unavailability either in the story or in the various lore sources, and then say in an interview that they believe that they successfully wrote all of these to a satisfactory finish/ending.
Especially they'll never answer why; if the Vault at the Tower got nuked, why couldn't you just grab your stuff from the Vault kiosks at The Temple or the Reef.
In fact, they won't ever even mention why you can't ever even go back to the Reef or the Temple once you get a ship in D2.
They'll just be... gone. No explanation. No lore. Just gone.
And then Bungie will again tell you that "they feel that they've done a wonderful job of wrapping up those stories." ...
An entire civilization of Awoken out on the Reef, just evaporates into thin air one night as the Cabal nuke the Tower, of which the two destinations are LITERALLY hundreds of millions of miles away from each other.
Same with the Temple. It's nowhere near the Tower or the Last City (the Last City is in southern Turkey, the Temple is in Russia), but with no explanation or even a line of dialogue, it will just be gone and forever unavailable. The Last Bastion of and Home for the greatest, most powerful Guardians that had ever lived, and it just disappears without even so much as a whisper.
I don't know what kind of spastic monkeys Bungie has writing the Story for D2, but they need to be given janitorial duties instead of writing for video games. Because they really suck at it.
- If our Ghost is out of the picture due to lack of the Traveler's Light, how the hell can we resurrect?
Guess you weren't paying attention in the beta. We get ghost back. How? It's a story element, have to play the game to find out. Duh.
- Our characters had voices in D1, what the hell happened to those? Acute laryngitis?
Bungie has a history of protagonists with few lines.
- If all of our stuff got nuked, how do we have the weapons we start off with?
If you paid attention in the beta, we were coming back from a mission. Kinda need gear for that, yes? Duh
- If we meet up with Shaxx in the opening mission, and he specifically let's us rummage through his own personal vault for that first exotic, why is his selection such shit? His vault (apparently) went untouched in the assault, so why can't we get some weapons that are actually useful?
1. Typical story element. Why give players the "good stuff" right outta the gate? 2. You're also technically in a hurry, lives are at stake. Taking who knows how long to rummage through an entire arsenal could cost lives.
- Why the change to our Supers and abilities? What prevents us from using the space magick that we wielded with lethal supremacy in D1?
Story element. Homecoming is not the first mission.
- Why can't we just go and visit the Reef or Temple when we get a ship to escape from the onslaught?
Story element. Who's to say the Temple is safe? Who's to say the Reef will let all Guardians and non-guardians take refuge there? And why abandon Earth, allowing the invasion force to take further hold of our homeworld?
- Speaking of... where the hell did the Reef and the Temple go? We know from the reveal that they're not on the map as travel destinations, so where the hell did they go?
Story elements. Play to find out. Duh.
- Our Vaults were also at the Reef and the Temple, what happened to those caches of our gear?
The Tower is where our goods are physically stored. They are simply transmatted to the Temple and Reef. Can't transmat a destroyed item.
- Why the drastic change in how our Guardians move/jump/play? Did we get polio suddenly?
Game mechanic not subject to lore consistency.
- Why are all the decisions about the game centered around PvP, when only around 20% of the entire game population played the PvP?
Strawman.
- Why was the Traveler silent as we got our asses handed to us? It protected us from all of the "Darkness" races at once, why not now when we're facing extinction yet again?
Story element. Even Amanda Holiday was hoping for it to do something. Have to play to find out.
- Why did I need to go to the Speaker? Aside from the abysmal main story in D1, what was the importance of the Speaker after that?
He is the defacto liason between the Traveler and us.
- If my Ghost is gone, how do I survive that fall off of Gary's battlecruiser?
Story element. Have to play to find out. Duh.
- Why does Ikora still have the kick-ass Nova Bomb, and I get stuck with throwing purple cottoncandy into the wind?
Artistic license not subject to lore consistency.
- Why does Cayde still have a one-shot-kill Golden Gun, and the one I get is nothing more than a water gun filled with urine (and about as effective)?
He's using the other version of GG we didn't have access to in the beta. Duh.
- Why all of the sudden do my precious Scout Rifles feel like nothing more than a BB gun?
Different weapons. Duh. Have to play to get better ones.
No... I strongly suspect that Bungie will handle all of these inconsistencies in the exact same manner that they handled the Stranger.
No, more than half are story elements, others are just game mechanics which are subject to change like any other game.
They'll ignore them, never address their sudden disappearance/unavailability either in the story or in the various lore sources, and then say in an interview that they believe that they successfully wrote all of these to a satisfactory finish/ending.
This is just spewing vitriol as usual and pretending you're incapable of any independent, critical thought. You really make yourself look less than...well, I won't say it cause Ninjas.
Especially they'll never answer why; if the Vault at the Tower got nuked, why couldn't you just grab your stuff from the Vault kiosks at The Temple or the Reef.
Already been explained and through lore. But just because you don't like the answer, you don't accept it. And the rest is just more vitriol. No need for me to go on.

just going to say....We don't know anything for certain until we play the full release. The only thing we know for certain is the "darkness". And I know Luke said the stuff about the Strangers story being wrapped up. But the only info they give us is what they are allowed to give. So until then I'm hoping it was a troll move in regards to that UNFINISHED story

You know like the forerunner in halo lol. Yeah that went well didn't it? Also all of these aren't inconsistencies just dumb pretentious questions. Have fun playing D2.
-
What are you talking about? Bungie did a beautiful job at allowing us to use our imaginations to their fullest!
-
Bump. I also want to know if there's any other inconsistencies that you guys know of that I didn't think of.
-
Why does the post have 0 upvotes? Are there really that many Bungie fanboys in here?
-
You saw that roundish thing across the lake when you visited the farm? Looks an awful lot like the missing piece of the traveler, doesn't it? Could there be that it's enough to power the "little lights" maybe? As you say point out, there's an amory still standing. That might be where your weapons originate? There's just 1 vault for all your stuff, that's the one you see being smashed. Reef and felwinter is sorta like teleportation devices. All your stuff doesnt replicate. If you remove something when in the reef, the same item isn't still in your vault at the tower. Furthermore, you can't compare a common guardian to the Class-bosses. Ikora, Cayde and Zavala has been around the block a few times. The space-magic is strong in those guys The awoken race was decimated by a single blast from the Dreadnaught, you think it's far-fetched that G could have sent them running/blown their ship out of the sky?

Edited by RPColten: 8/7/2017 4:59:33 PMMuch of this comes down to a suspension of disbelief. It's a matter of being hyper-critical about something that is being perceived by the creators as a fresh start and nitpicking every inconsistency that comes up when a sequel is created that is designed to be more or less isolated from its predecessor.

Edited by Durandal: 8/7/2017 8:50:01 PMThere has actually been clarification since that Luke smith interview. Other things will be addressed, the strangers story is not done and over, it's just that they are moving into a more episodic style storytelling environment now, so that for destiny 2 the base game will deal almost exclusively with the cabal, then the warmind expansion should answer a lot about Rasputin and things related to him, and the Osiris expansion will do the same for that. It sounds like they do want to answer much more, but they plan to do it through a more self-contained method from here on out. Destiny introduced the universe and created a lot of things to think about, but they aren't going to progress and answer everything all at once. Luke Smith is a horrible communicator and should be gagged so that this kind of thing doesn't keep on happening in regard to questions and answers about the future of the game.
-
Whoever is writing the story is using those little fridge magnets. You know, the ones that are a whole lot of individual words and you put them together to make sentences. They just don't have enough money in the "story budget" to get another set of words.

They did address some of that ....... right into the trash bin.

What happened to the Queen and her brother ? Why was Eris Morn all creepy at the end of TTK and who was she talking to ? Is Siva gone once we killed Aksis?
-
Bump! Awesome questions. Yeh, I'd like consistency. I just truthfully think, they're still experimenting with everything about this game. & I think it's clear to see... It's much easier to have Luke Smith, say on camera, "destiny 2 is about a fresh start" Than it is having consistency, or admitting you fůcked up

Edited by MuKoKu: 8/4/2017 2:02:32 PMWithout Joseph Staten, Bungie's narrative abilities will always be sorely lacking. They should have thought twice before scrapping and butchering his work and totally disrespecting him to the point where he quit. Some of what you mentioned are plot holes, but I'd say most of them are more akin to horrible writing.
-
Edited by DeusFever: 8/6/2017 4:30:59 PMImagine you are interviewing a former writer from Bungie and you ask them about the Stranger's storyline. If they say "we feel that we handled it very well", would you want to hire them?

Edited by Enochua: 8/6/2017 7:46:27 AMpeople act like there isn't story Inconsistencies and or rewrites to stories in every movie, video game and comic books franchises. halo, zelda, star wars, lord of the rings, marvel, DC. the people writing the stories get inspired and re-inspired by other thoughts and "visions". quit being such "angry nerds" and just enjoy the story that's being told. most are mad that the story didn't turn out the way they wanted.

Edited by Lizard King: 8/4/2017 9:53:02 AMWhen i first watched the initial E3 representation i asked my friends following : What the hack happened to our supers. Bungie did a terrible mistake there imo to start with. Guardians should start with their existing supers with D1. At one point Ghaul took our lights away. That is the perfect moment to change the supers to new ones. There will be a mission that force guardians to go and gather their light back. The new supers should be introduced then. This would be more logical and would fit the story way better. However what bugged the hell out of me during the beta is following . Cayde using Ace of Spades - Shaxx using Raze Lighter This is simply a blast in our face , what the hack happened to actual vaults If my vault is gone why Cayde and Shax can keep their exotics ? This is utter bullshit and an insult to Destiny 1 players. If you are taking our gear away then remove them from the game completely. Rest i agree with you as usual Vampire , as of now what we see is completely garbage and trust me what they presented is their best work for Destiny 2. That should tell every guardian the quality they shall expect from D2. Destiny 2 us a boring PVP game. PVP games are evolving further , Overwatch - Playerunknowns Battleground etc.. are highlighting that old PVP days are in past. Hack even that much criticised Battlefront have PVP modes tied into actual Star Wars stories. Bungie will never suceed on Destiny 2 as a PVP game on 2017 - 2018 Must have 60fps and min 60 tick rate. Currently Destiny has 30 fps and 10 tick rate. It is a joke on competitive side.
-
Wait wait wait... they said The Stranger's story was fully concluded and handled well? That was day one feedback that every player, game vlogger/blogger pointed out as a glaring incomplete and incomprehensible. For which Bungie said "more to come" to make the plot more clear. I'm guessing Lauren was too expensive to get back.
-
I ilke this alot....bungies storytellers have a habit of politicians...just ignoring inconvenient truths they dont like
-
I was disappointed that my guardian, who defeated the hive god, vex god (was he a god? I think if he wasn't he was sort of at that level), etc etc. all those big things, but couldn't stand up, and use a gun without light. If we're just normal at that point, why didn't he get up and shoot, or punch or something? Just kinda laid there, like me playing single player on mkx on hard mode.
-
I'd love to see how they'll explain how magically machine guns just simply no longer exist in the universe. Apparently none of our guardians would have the smallest shred of intelligence to say "Hmmmm I could really use an MG right now, I wonder why there are none?" They probably won't even explain it in story. Just magically *poof* no more machine guns. Such a simple and commonly used weapon just magically gone with no mention of how or why in game. This alone represents the amount of dumbassery this company is stooping to in order to gargle on streamers and PvP as hard as possible.
-
I find it amazing that you sat there and wrote all that when all of the answers can be found by a quick YouTube search
-
Yes, let's just run to The Reef, whose fleet was almost entirely destroyed by Oryx, leaving them with very little to defend themselves with, let alone the guardians. That seems like a good idea. Or let's just lead the Cabal to a different poorly defensible location, one that contains all the information we have on SIVA. Because once the Cabal get their hands on THAT they surely won't be undefeatable. Another brilliant idea you got there.
