A few things I gotta cover.
First off, I'm sorry about not putting out chapters as much. I've been quite busy. And incredibly lazy.
Also, I've decided that first person isn't fun anymore. It's just... meh.
So this last first person chapter goes to Blakepai.
I woke up to the sight of Campus Nine. The old research station was just as depressing. JJ was awake, and no longer had a dart in his neck. Chase was still there. But the mystery was… Gusty. Where was that Warlock?
Chase told me Gusty left. Damnit. I really wanted to punch him. I guess I’ll compensate somehow. Somehow….
Without a moment to spare, JJ already had his helmet on. But he used his sniper as a staff as he stared out into the horizon, wistfully.
I kept on thinking that the Staring out into the horizon thing was some sort of cliche. Or a reference to something, like, an age-old movie. Maybe it’d seem more familiar if he did the exact same thing on Mars.
What bothered me more is that he was completely silent, as if he was trying to concentrate on something huge.
Chase tapped me on the shoulder, “He’s trying to piece together his memories, Blake. They’re restored, just that some don't make sense.”
“I think the pretty girl hated him,” JJ mutters.
“What?” Chase asked.
“Pretty girl?” I asked.
“I don’t remember her name,” he recalls, “But she had brown eyes, and brown hair. Her smile could melt you if she willed it to. She’s in most of my memories, until shortly after my revival. Then, it’s just the three of us.”
The description matched Sarah. (In his eyes, of course. I could care less about her). I spoke up, “Sounds like--”
Chase shushed me, he dragged me away from JJ. “I don’t think we should tell him that,” he whispered.
“Why not?” I asked.
“Gusty said that Hideo told him to shoot JJ in the neck with a dart, and if JJ remembered the girl when he woke up, shoot him with another dart. We don't want that to happen again,” he whispered.
“Could be any girl,” I replied.
“Something told me he meant Sarah,” Chase added.
“Call it a hunch but I heard that she’s been exiled,” Puma told us, “So maybe Gusty was misinformed, or lied about the effects of the dart.”
“Wait, that makes sense,” I said, “JJ’s the one who cared the most about her openly. Which meant he would’ve gone to any lengths to keep her exile from happening.”
“So the dart was designed to make him forget about her.”
“Hey! What are you whispering about?” JJ yelled.
“We don’t tell anyone about this,” Chase concluded, “Especially JJ.”
“I know I won’t,” I told him.
“We have to keep him as far away from the truth as possible.”
I know I promised Chase that I’d never tell JJ. But that behavior didn't exactly seem like Chase. I thought he was more transparent than that. I guess I was wrong.
Our comms crackled, “ATTENTION GUARDIANS, THIS IS PETRA VENJ OF THE AWOKEN ROYAL GUARD. MULTIPLE BOUNTIES HAVE BEEN ISSUED ON HIGH-VALUE FALLEN TARGETS. THE REEF IS NOW OPEN TO YOU.”
I chuckled, “Sounds like fun.”
“Okay, sure. As a team. Just three guys killing Fallen. As bros,” Chase said.
“Yeah, but where is the Reef?” JJ asked.
“None of us have been,” I said.
Our Ghosts transmatted us into our ships, and we flew to the coordinates the transmission had left.
The Reef was so purple, I began to hate that color. We were transmatted on a platform in what looked like an outpost.
“The Vestian Outpost,” Delphi said.
Women wearing sleek navy armor and face masks, so that I could only see their mouths.
I saw a four armed… wait… is that a Fallen Vandal?
My eyes bugged out of my head. My instincts kicked in and I ran toward the Vandal, holding my fist near my head.
The ladies in the Navy armor swarmed around me. They tackled me to the ground. And I blacked out.
