I think the critics were a bit harsh on "The Mummy"

Spoiler Alert Yes, there were things in the movie where it needs to be done differently for a proper mummy movie. Lets face it though, it was not completely terrible to the point where people shouldn't even consider watching it. My Ratings: 3/5, 6.5/10, 64% I'll start with the bad For one Tom Cruise was the wrong actor for this role(Nick Morton). I mean come on, a guy that has made his career playing Spies/soldiers suddenly turns into a scavenger searching for rare antiques. Technically he is still "in the army" but lets face it, Nick is just a scavenger with a gun. Secondly they really overplayed Nick's own strength, therefore underplaying Set's power/strength once he took form in Nick's body. Showing Nick successfully take on Mr Hyde on his own should not have been in the film. Sure he gets bashed around a bit but all of these fights he gets in with the monsters and he ends up fatigued after. Then Set takes over his body and somehow Nick is still able maintain control of his mind. I mean come on, if there is a God that took over somebody mind and body you would not be able to fight back. Thirdly the plot got a little mixed up with an intro to this new "Dark Universe" they are trying to make. Maybe they should have just focused on making this a pure mummy movie rather than trying to explain this stuff for the "Dark Universe" series. Make "The Mummy" as it's own film then make a prequel movie to explain all of the things about the group that gets rid of evil. Fourthly some of the fights could've been much more memorable. They were basically just Nick getting knocked around a bunch. One that even I could improve is the fight with Mr Hyde. Ahmanet was in the next room ready to escape and they could have just had it so she was the one that actually fights Mr Hyde(protecting her chosen) and then escapes. Nick vs Mr Hyde= Nick gets kicked around until he gets hold of the serum, Ahmanet vs Mr Hyde= an actual fight. Now I know there was a lot of bad but now I'll talk about the good. First Sofia Boutella did a great job in her role as Ahmanet. She may not have had a ton of lines but she was able to show a lot of the emotions with her facial expressions and the way she moved. Second it is entertaining to the point where you wish there was more. You get to enjoy the movie as a movie maybe not a full Mummy movie but movie in general. It also does tend to intrigue you about how this Dark Universe will turn out. Third it is giving monster movie fans a little something. Lets face it, the only recent monster movies are just cartoon ones like Hotel Transylvania and Monsters Inc. Other ones are just superhero movies(don't really count) Fourth it is bringing back the genre that many people become fascinated with.

I like to critique the movies I see (sometimes I see more than one movie per week) so here's what I thought: It was ok, but not great. I would've liked a little more backstory to Nick's character instead of us just understanding that he's a scavenger and former soldier, I also would've liked to have Nick's sidekick (the one who died and became Ahmet's servant) in more scenes to serve as the comedic relief. Tom Cruise was ok as Nick but they could have easily chosen someone better to play him with more personality and likability but he got the job done portraying his character. I get that Universal is trying to set up their "Dark Universe" continuity but they tried a little to hard making Russel Crowe's Dr Jekyll (basically gave away that they'll do a Jekyll and Hyde movie) portray the guy who's gonna serve as our kind of guide throughout the Dark Universe movies. I thought that the action scenes were pretty good thou and there was a handful of genuinely funny scenes like that one when Ahmet was about to sacrifice Nick inside that Cathedral in Europe with all the police officers who she turned into zombies holding him down then for Jenny to walk in and then Ahmet and the zombies head's turned to her like they were on a swivel. I'd give it a 6.5/10, not sure if I'd recommend seeing it but if you're bored (like I was) and have nothing to do then definitely give it a shot.

        • It's not that the new Mummy movie was terrible (it was), it's that Universal is so desperate for their own "Marvel Cinematic Universe." So, they're going to pathetically drag all of their old monster movie properties and "revamp" them for a quick buck. Universal is trying to make their own interconnected movie universe so they can rake in the cash. Too bad they suck at making movies. Hollywood is dead. They can't think of anything new. The last nee, original, successful movie was Avatar. Why can't we have more stuff like that? But no. We get remakes of old movies for nostalgia's sake and for quick cash grabs.

          • I'm surprised that a lot of people ( on these forums ) didn't like the trailers since that was the thing that convinced me to give the film a chance. I went in with very low expectations ( by the time I got to see it, all the reviews were out and the consensus was that it was crap ) and I walked away thinking that it was much better than all the reviews said it was. It wasn't great, heck I probably wouldn't even call it good, but it wasn't bad either, it was just kind of there, existing on plane of mediocrity. I did walk away from it with a strong urge to re-watch the 1999 Mummy film, which I did. That kind of highlighted a lot more of the 2017 film's shortcomings, why re-make something if you can't top the thing your trying to re-make?

              • The main reason I won't watch it is because I absolutely can't stand putting money into that psycho midget's wallet. If they had cast any other action movie star I would watch it.

                  • The issue with it as far is I understand it is that it lacks humor which was part of mummy formula, and is now simply a monster movie.

                    • My problem with the movie was the script and the tone. The dialogue was thoroughly contrived and terrible, and the tone was all over the damn place.

                      • i have'nt watched it but i think most movie goers are tired of this type of old hat cinema. it's kind of like the yearly call of duty or fifa or madden not nba though that looks legit. back on topic we've already seen these movies just with different actors and less cgi which in itself has numbed the public. i can tell how a movie is going to go about halfway into it the plot unfolds way too soon in movies nowadays.

                        • Seeing how you talk mostly about Cruise, it tells you more then enough about the movie. 90% of the entire movie is Tom Cruise on screen. That doesnt give alot of room for the other people starring in there. Instead of calling it The Mummy, they should have called it Tom Cruise, starring some Mummy but not important.

Are you out of your mind, for once in their life they got it right. Just take one look at the trailer and any halfbrained inbred redneck could tell you this movie is going to be a disaster. if anything, it's an insult to the original mummy movies. only people who like this crap are the same naïve minded fools who loved avengers, and that whole shitty concept grow up
