Smith recently had this to say about Destiny 1's story, specifically referenceing The Exo Stranger's story arc...
Is there a world in which we never find out who the Exo Stranger was talking to on the phone?
Yeah, I mean, there’s a world where you never find out anything else about the Exo Stranger, and there’s a world where the Exo Stranger is the star of—
Destiny 3?
[Laughs] Yeah, there’s a world where the Exo Stranger has a cartoon or a comic book series or whatever. With Destiny, we have so many cool opportunities to tell stories in and out of the game. And we have a bunch of characters who are interesting, but the Exo Stranger is one that always makes me chuckle a little bit. Because I feel that’s one character where we actually wrapped up the arc. She gave you a sweet gun and then dissolved, presumably off to do something else. So I feel like, of all of our characters we’ve introduced and exited, we actually exited her effectively. But she always comes up. She always comes up, so there’s obviously something to that character that piques people’s curiosity.
Does this offend anyone other than myself? Does Luke Smith/Bungie believe we're this stupid? Surely Smith doesn't truly believe this same drivel about the rest of Destiny 1's story elements and side plots.
I don't think I have ever heard anyone with this opinion of her story arc. I can't fathom how Smith believes that Bungie, "exited her effectively." Even with the information in the Grimoire she is still a giant mystery. Are we not supposed to want to know who she was talking to? Where she came from? What her purpose was/is/will be?
For the record: I do appreciate that they are really focusing on telling a thoroughly deep story from Destiny 2 onward. However, we can't just drop Destiny 1 and pretend like it never happened. What a slap in the face to those of us (players and content creators) who invested our time and effort into playing and decrypting (pun intended) Destiny 1's story and history.
(EDIT: Wooo!!! We're trending! Let's keep this conversation going, Guardians.)
(EDIT 2: Updated title to remove redundancies.)
(EDIT 3: Some great replies and good conversation going on here. Keep it up y'all!)

What story?
-
To be reasonable, whatever happened with Destinys story was likely not his problem or vision so I'd understand not wanting to touch on it all.

Edited by Sideswipe: 6/17/2017 3:21:26 PM
Does this offend anyone other than myself? Does Luke Smith/Bungie believe we're this stupid?
If you're offended by truth, then yes, you are less than average intelligence. Her story arc was completed. Her role was to get you to Venus and Mars in an attempt to destroy the Black Garden. Mission accomplished. There's still plenty of room with new story arcs that could explain more of who she is and what her motivations are. Think about it. She falls into a similar category as Boba Fett and Wolverine - both were beloved by fans who wanted to know more about their mysterious pasts. We had to wait almost 20 years for Boba's backstory (which was a huge letdown) and almost 30 for Wolverine. Both were also originally intended as basically one-off plot devices. So have some damn patience. It is possible to lobby for more stories with/about the Stranger without being offended/insulted. Just because it isn't now, doesn't mean it can't be in the future, maybe a year from now, or D3, or whenever there is another story revolving around the Vex.
However, we can't just drop Destiny 1 and pretend like it never happened. What a slap in the face to those of us (players and content creators) who invested our time and effort into playing and decrypting (pun intended) Destiny 1's story and history.
Yeah, they're just throwing away everything in D1. That's why they're continuing storylines from D1. The Cabal Distress signal? D1 Osiris? D1 Rasputin? D1. This is why Luke Smith thinks you're stupid - you're offended/insulted by them "throwing away storylines from D1" when the next 3 chapters are subplots from D1. Smh... With posts like these it's no wonder Bungie prefers Reddit...
Does this offend anyone other than myself?
If you're offended by an unsatisfactory end to a game characters arc then you have serious issues. Offended... seriously?

Not sure why people are upset by Luke's comments. The biggest complaint about D1 was the incoherent, seemingly plastered together story, which was caused by upper management in Activision hating the original story and cutting it and it's main writer a year before launch. If gamers want a deeper narrative, it makes sense to focus on a more identifiable enemy arc. Also, he said they'd get back to the, "Darkness," at a later time, perhaps 3 more years down the road. And as far as the Exo Stranger, oh well. She was tied to the original story that got cut, along with the queen and her brother, story arc. Ghaul, and his story seems interesting and worth exploring. Give Bungie a break. Their employees work long hard hours to produce digital content, we get to enjoy on our off time. Lighten up some.

Why can't her story be a mystery? I think I actually like it that way
-
It offends you lmfao.
-
Why do we keep trying to beat a dead horse ?
-
Good. Leave the crapy patch work story behind and create something new.

Also flat out saying that they may or may not explore those things lol. Even if they thought the exo stranger did what she needed. Context everyone, and also some reading comprehension.

Edited by Barrierr-: 6/16/2017 3:56:15 PMLol just goes to show what kind of story we can expect in D2 if they still believe this way. "Here's something big to kill until the next DLC where we introduce something else to kill & there won't be any continuity at all! Become legend!" You shouldn't be mad at Luke for telling the truth. You should be mad that Bungie still doesn't give a damn about story & are only interested in selling us a point & shoot game.

Edited by Just Shaded: 6/16/2017 2:21:31 PMI'm sorry but what? In the conversation about the exo stranger he said "we actually exited her effectively." Does he realize how dumb that sounds? Does he know how bad he/bungie looks when he says something like that? I mean really? You're going to tell us that even you know you can't effectively exit characters? That shit is pathetic. Edit: fixed my quote

Edited by Hurphy: 6/15/2017 7:07:02 PMIs Luke Smith bad at interviews or does he just not care...? Hmm. Hard to imagine anyone "accidentally" constantly putting their foot in their mouth as a "lead."

Edited by OldboyVicious: 6/15/2017 7:03:14 AMI am not offended. I do however, feel that it is not a complete story arc. To me, the story arc feels as if the Exo Stranger is the main character, and our character is merely the NPC that joins a couple of random times to help further the main character. I think that the belief of Luke Smith that the Exo Stranger has no more to offer, and is "wrapped up" shows that he is not in touch with what makes a good story. He says that player interest is "piqued" but in my opinion it is more as if players are saying "WTF was that, and when are we going to see what all of this means?" Sometimes characters in a story don't get all the answers. But the players of the story at least deserve a story that makes sense, and if there are mysteries deliberately left open to ponder, they should be based in open-ended arcs which allow for interpretation based on what we know and have seen. The problem with the Exo Stranger's story is that there is very little to go on. She notices us, watches us, approaches us, has us travel to different locations in order to fight enemies, tells us that there are many more enemies that are much nastier, gives us a gun, then disappears. This feels to me more like a MacGuffin style plot device loosely manifested as a character, rather than a cohesive story. The Exo Stranger, as a character, leaves not just something to ponder, but everything and that is why the story fails to be a complete arc. Who is she? What is she doing? Why is she doing it? Where is she from? Etc. There is nothing about the Exo Stranger to even posit a plausible guess. There needs to be solid foundation and exposition behind a character. Something to make the character real. The Exo Stranger shows potential to be developed further, and be very interesting. But as is, the character fails to be interesting and mysterious, instead merely causing is to raise an eyebrow and ask "is there supposed to be a story here?" It is a common thread in Destiny to have characters we know nothing about telling our characters what to do with no motivation. We play and watch the story unfold on the hopes that the mystery will draw us on further. That the answers and subsequent mysteries will be compelling. To merely say "I could tell you..." or "I don't have time to explain..." is not how you develop mystery and intrigue. It is a cop-out.

Jeeezz, like you see her the first day in Destiny after that never saw her in 3 f-ing years! What do you guys do? Delete characters all day and run story mode? No! It doesn't f-ing matter.
-
Ff they wrapped up the stranger's storyline in vanilla, they unwrapped it in taken king.

Ahem... allow me.
She was created in a world where the Sol Progeny ruled supreme, hence why the Heart needed to be destroyed. Since we destroyed it, she technically shouldn't have existed, but she still gave us info. So, since Praedyth couldn't be fully erased within the Vault of Glass (which has the same power the Progeny were supposed to bring forth IRL) I can assume the Stranger also couldn't be erased fully, which is why we have her rifle and why will still destroyed the Heart. So she suffered the same fate as Praedyth, but for the future instead of the past.
OK. So. In a way, if they take this route, they did wrap up her story. She will never exist, yet she existed. Like Praedyth.

Not suprised/shocked by anything Luke Smith says. He seems to suffer from a terminal case of 'foot in mouth' syndrome. More shocked Bungie let him within 50ft of a microphone or reporter. Never heard anyone consider the exo strangers story to be complete. If Bungie had thought about the story in D2, she could of played a role in helping the guardians recapture the light after it was lost. The Red Legion could of been the threat she was one referring too.
-
Yup the story was sure wrapped up... In a god damn carpet after being bludgeoned to death by the creative forces that brought you Halo and Call of Duty. It must of left a pretty decent stain.
-
You'll find out in Destiny 20: The Big Bang(your mouth!)

wwwaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

That sounds like another "throw money at the screen" community outburst haha

Why can't we just get a big ass vault, what's so f'kin hard about that? I swear they're messing with us.
