Hey Bungie Team,
I´ve been a huge Destiny fan since release and I loved Halo before that. I have recently been given the opportunity to write my bachelor thesis on gamification in psychological diagnostics. Now one way of gamifying a diagnostic test is to add experience points and rewards for certain achievements. To illustrate that this is a method that has been used in games for quite some time now and to show a great way of implementing it I would like to use a screenshot of the Destiny character screen, highlighting the level and and experience bar underneath it. Now I have been through your legal FAQ and Terms of Use but unfortunately I am not a lawyer and am still somewhat unclear on if this is allowed or not. That brings me to my actual question. Is it possible for me to use such a screenshot in my (non profit) bachelor thesis? And if so would it be possible to get some sort of written consent from your side? The thesis will most likely not be published and neither I nor my university shall gain any sort of profit from it. It would be great if this were possible and I´m looking forward to your answer. Thanks in advance.
PS: I live in Germany and the thesis will be handed in at a German university

Edited by FrenetiCreature: 6/10/2017 6:29:53 PMWhen I would get bored at school, or work, and didn't want to be there, I would "gamify" it. I used to really be into the Final Fantasy games, so I would imagine that I was in training for some kind of elite group, like the "Seed Class" students, from Final Fantasy VIII. Leveling up, and earning skills, with different achievements. It made school, or work, seem less monotonous. It sounds kinda dumb, I know, but it was just my personal way of getting through the day. So, I think this is a neat idea. I think I understood what your thesis is kind of about, and my comment relates to it; if not, just disregard my dumb comment. Lol!

Bump for education.
these forums need more learning
It's called a footnote or citation, you don't need permission for the same reason Bungina can't do shit about twitch or thousands of streamers making money off their game
-
Refer to the APA 6th edition manual for correct citation.
-
Good luck with the paper
-
Fair use. Its an international right. Google "Berne Convention". Regards, A guardian-at-law.
-
Dude, it's fine just reference it correctly
-
Awesome dude I also used destiny as the basis for writing a contract in business law

I, like you, am not a lawyer. But looking at the IP and TM article and Game Content Usage Rules, it looks like you should be OK to use images from Destiny for the purpose you mentioned.
You may use game footage, screenshots, and other elements of Bungie games that are owned by Bungie (“Bungie Content”) to create your own content (“Your Content”) provided that you must comply with these Terms and all of the following restrictions (the “Content Usage Rules”):
Though, again, I'm not a lawyer, and it couldn't hurt to get permission. After all, they granted permission to the guy who wanted a Destiny cake. https://www.bungie.net/en-us/Forums/Post/224462581?sort=0&page=0&path=1 Bump + like for science.

Is it me or should they have moved this to #help? I dont think its really on the topic of destiny. Crazy bungie.net moderators.

-
Cite the source of the pic and you should be good.
-
Just put a Bungie.net watermark or something on the photo that makes it clear it's not your property or creation and you're golden.
-
Bum, ba Bum Bum, BUMP!
-
I may be wrong, but if I'm not mistaken you just have to correctly site your source to provide adequate credit to the original creator of the material. Good to see that you're trying to do the right thing, but I feel like you may be overthinking it a little. Now if you were doing this for something that provided you with monetary gain it would be a different story. However this is for an academic paper.
-
It should fall under fair use (do to it being for academic purposes) meaning you can use it, however; Im no lawyer and I could be completely wrong
bump
-
It's all good... else how would youtubers get away with it?
-
You're good to use screenshots from Destiny. https://www.bungie.net/en/View/Bungie/terms https://www.bungie.net/en/View/bungie/sla

Bump, good luck!
-
You are in the legal clear; this is a clear example of the Fair Use clause '...for the purposes of education...'. You can certainly use a screenshot, although I would specifically denote the source (Fig. 1, Destiny, ver. 2.5.0.2) or whatever other form of citation would be most academically acceptable to your institution.
