In the time since I first wrote this, we have learned that the three TTK subclasses are indeed returning. However, I would still recommend giving this a read for the information about the Light and how it works.
Hey all, I've been hearing all the talk about us potentially keeping the subclasses and abilities that we gained in The Taken King and I disagree. Here are a couple reasons why I don't believe we'll be seeing the subclasses return in Destiny 2. Bear with me because this post is going to be pretty long.
1) Lore potential - While it is true that the Traveler did not grant us our third subclasses, they are still powered by the Light. And if Ulan-Tan's theory on Light is correct (more on him later), all Light is connected across space and time. Support for said theory comes from the Grimoire card Ghost Fragment: Cabal, in which a stranded Ghost notes its eventual death due to being "too far from the Traveler for too long."
Why do I find this to be the most likely? Well, Ulan-Tan was a Warlock who came up with the theory known as The Symmetry. The Symmetry preached that the Light and Darkness were eternal powers that would forever main symmetry in a cosmic balance- a cosmic yin yang as it were. (See card The Darkness). This thesis is backed up by the way the Light and Darkness are described in the Books of Sorrow and in the notes of the mad Warlock, Toland the Shattered. (See card Ghost Fragment: The Darkness 3)
Ulan-Tan's teachings were so popular that they eventually formed a cult/faction following the Warlock's death. (See Ghost Fragment: The City Age)
2) Practicality - Bungie themselves have said that while our characters and classes will carry over to Destiny 2, nothing else will. This includes subclasses. I believe that Bungie would rather create all new subclasses and abilities, rather than port over an old one.
However, I do still believe that we will have Light-based powers in Destiny 2. I theorize that the Cabal damage/ put the Traveler into some kind of stasis, cutting us off from the Light. However, provided that Ulan-Tan's thesis is correct, we could potentially work around this and regain access to the Light via the shard of the Traveler. The reason I say this is because in the Age of Triumph live event, the Speaker was given new radiant dialogue, some of which talks about it refers to "The Shard." However, keep in mind that all of this is just speculation and none of this is actually confirmed.
EDIT: This is a distinction that I should have made earlier. None of our subclasses come from the Traveler. We get raw Light from the Traveler, which we use to manipulate the cosmic elements of Solar, Arc, and Void. With the loss of our Light, we lose the ability to manipulate these elements, and thus, we lose all of our subclasses.
Thanks for reading guys, I hope you all enjoyed it, or at the very least it got the gears turning in your head. You can find more of my work in the Muzzy Archive. I would like to give partial credit for the Shard Theory to my fellow lorist and ashenite, Haffoc. We discussed the meaning of the new Speaker dialogue and came to this conclusion together.

TTK subclasses coming to D2 You were wrong
-
welp... we got the TTK subclasses
-
Bummer. Had a lot of fun as a sunbreaker
-
-
The reason for us loosing our subclasses, I'm pretty sure is because if you watch the trailer u can see that the traveler is on fire which could mean the cabal destroy it.
-
This is wrong, because the TTK subclasses don't use light from the Traveller. The Stormcallers uses power from the arc storm, the Nightstalkers draw their power directly from the void, and finally, the Subreakers draw their power from the Sun, forging their light in the forge near Mercury.

I stopped reading after "YING Yang."
-
Real reason: so that they can sell them back to us as a micro transaction.

Edited by Iron Wu: 5/14/2017 10:57:59 PMThere's one flaw in your theory. The official trailor for the game showed a Warlock using Stormcaller melee. Also if our light is totally gone than so are our ghosts. Yet Nolan North is already confirmed for Destiny 2 Real life facts and facts we can see with our eyes trump speculation.

The loss of light should honestly result in death or at least the death of our ghost leaving us with one life and thus making destiny into a perma death rogue like.
While it is true that the Traveler did not grant us our third subclasses, they are still powered by the Light.
I'm pretty sure that the Traveler didn't grant any subclasses, per say. It gave us Light. Our Subclasses are just ways people have learned to use their Light. It's like learning science or math, it's always there, we just have to discover it. Once Light was introduced, the subclasses (and more) were always there and within attainment, we just had to learn that it was there to attain.
-
All subclasses will move with us to destiny 2 because traveler he didn't give us these classes as we saw in Destiny 2 Video Ikora used Storm Caller Melee Attack
-
The light connected may be true but the travler is not the source of all light
-
I agree we won't be keeping any of them and you're right that without light the source of our abilities themselves don't matter. The shard is an interesting theory for how we would gain light again. Others have shared theories about bargains with the Ahamkara or drawing on the darkness itself. It would be interesting to see there be a quest chain of some sort for all subclasses this time around, preferably more than just a single one and done mission.

Because the Taken King was trash and ruined Destiny
-
Edited by Aqua: 5/14/2017 9:57:46 PM1. Wrong. Light is everywhere. The Traveler is A source of light. The Sun isn't going out anytime soon. 2. The Subclasses aren't porting as they are NOW. They can appear in some other form in Destiny 2. Why would our Guardians forget how to summon their powers once the Traveler is free? It wouldn't make sense.
-
I hope we don't get any subclasses and that the only time we get to use our supers is at the final mission and the end of the raid when we get a kill feed message that says "Bathed in Light".
-
I know why because they will sell the subclasses as a new fresh dlc :'D.
-
I'm bookmarking this for the gameplay reveal. If I see stormcaller, sunbreaker, or nightstalker I'm coming back. Explain the use of thunderstrike in the reveal trailer.

Nice post. I'm a little surprised so many responders misunderstand Light and how it infuses Guardians to use the Light in the different forms we understand as subclasses.

Edited by TrooperHR: 5/14/2017 12:12:47 PMWe already seen the concept art where if I remember correctly Titan remains the "denfeder" but with a solar shield. Warlock remains the "support" with solar sword, Hunter remains the "attacker" with a solar spear.
-
I must be the Speaker, as I am always talking about "The Shart".
as many sharts as there are guardians.
-
i don't care about subclasses. i want a new main class. and possibly a new playable race.
-
Who's to say we won't have 2 of each. Like golden gun plus a new solar subclass. We could have a choice of 2 of each element. There will be new ones I think, poison or corrosion, ice or water based, illusion or time bending based for a hunter. Please though bungie, shoulder charge, sticky nades and evades, be gone...! Get rid of all the cheesy bullshit. Concentrate on people's gun skills not gimmicks. Let the best gun skills win...!

or bungie is just FoS. way shorter post👍

Edited by HollowedWayfarer: 5/14/2017 1:27:42 AMAnd people fail to realize that the light from the TTK subclasses are not comeing from the traveler. The traveler isn't the only source of light. Saying that every ability vanishes because the traveler gets hurt is complete bs. Yes, Nightstalkers, Stormcallers, and Sunbreakers get their abilities from light, but it's not the travelers light.
