Free Day
Now that he finally had time to spare, Yuri slipped away from the tower with Cayde-6. They touched down in a plain somewhere in Russia. Off in the distance, there was a large hill where the fallen had clearly made a home.
Yuri: So What did you want to show me?
Cayde-6: Well, like I said, I’ve got this huge stockpile of flux grenades in a wonderful place.
Yuri: Where are they?
Cayde-6 pointed off to the fallen base in the distance.
Yuri: Did the fallen find it?
Cayde-6: Nah, There’s no way. Had that thing buried so nothing could find it. I wanted to go get it, but then I discovered some fallen set up base there.
Yuri: So, are we going to get them?
Cayde-6: Nope.
Cayde-6 pulled out a small detonator.
Cayde-6: We’re going to watch the fireworks.
Yuri and Cayde-6 looked over to the fallen base. Cayde-6 hit the detonator and the whole hill-side lit up in fire and wreckage. Cayde-6 and Yuri figured they had their work cut out for them, but they didn’t consider the consequences of their actions. While they admired the beautiful bloom from the explosion, a large shadow loomed over them. A ketch dropped in behind them.
Cayde-6: Hey who turned off the-, oh...my…
Yuri and Cayde-6 turned to see the ketch. Several skiffs deployed and headed straight for the two hunters.
Cayde-6: Hey, you know, I think now’s a good time for a sparrow race.
Cayde-6 and Yuri quickly hopped on their sparrows and took off. The skiffs followed and dropped pikes to keep on them. They raced toward the destroyed base. The pikes started firing at the hunters. Yuri tossed a knife behind him and took out one of the pike riders. There were still several more on them. They zipped past the base while bits of it were still falling down. Cayde-6 and Yuri slipped in between the debris. Some of the pikes got crushed under some of the falling wreckage. Others couldn’t turn fast enough to avoid hitting some of the twisted beams and platforms on the ground.
When the hunters made it past the destroyed base, there were two pikes left. Some skiffs stopped by the base to salvage what they could. There rest went after the hunters. Two skiff flew ahead and dropped a few fallen in the way of the hunters.
Yuri: How many pike are left?
Cayde-6: I count two. Thinkin’ what I’m thinkn’?
Yuri: Clothes line ‘em.
Yuri and Cayde-6 both jumped off their sparrow and rolled to a quick stop. They whipped out their weapons and took the heads off the pike riders. The two hunters ran over to the pikes and commandeered them before charging the line again.
Cayde-6: Let ‘em have it.
Yuri and Cayde-6 stopped just a little outside the fallens’ range before firing. The line disappeared in a flash of arc.
Cayde-6: Noice!
Yuri: Noice?
Cayde-6: You like it? I just made it up.
Yuri: I thought that was a pre-golden age saying.
Cayde-6: Nope. I made it up first. Don’t trust those tower files. We feed you lies.
Yuri and Cayde-6 drove into a canyon. The skiffs were forced to break away from their chase.
Cayde-6: This is nice. I had fun today Yuri, we’ll have to do this again sometime.
Yuri: I’m not sure we’re out of the bush just yet. Transmat is blocked, and I’m pretty sure the fallen blocked the other end of this canyon.
Cayde-6: Ah….Well….more fun then.
Cayde-6 and Yuri came up on the other end of the canyon and saw two fallen walkers.
Yuri: Load the pikes.Return to sender.
Cayde-6: What?
Yuri: Bootleg missile maneuver.
Cayde-6: Ah, Gotcha.
Yuri and Cayde-6 shot something in the engines of the pikes that made the pikes go into overdrive. The hunters jumped off the pikes as they accelerated toward the walkers. The walkers tried to destroy the pikes, but the pikes were too fast. The pikes rammed into the walkers, causing them to expose their cores. Cayde-6 and Yuri pulled out snipers and unloaded on the cores. The walkers ignited into a cloud of fire.
Cayde-6: Suppose that got them off our trail?
Out of the blue, one of the pursuing skiffs crashed off in the distance. The hunters exchanged confused looks.
Yuri: I didn’t do that.
Cayde-6: Normally I’d say I planned that, but I didn’t.
A ship flew overhead. It was one of FWC’s “Road Unraveled” ships. Yuri immediately knew it was Taravax-7’s ship. Taravax-7 buzzed the two hunters on the comms.
//Taravax-7: You two really know how to get into trouble. Tell someone what you’re doing next time so you don’t get killed.
In a quick flash, Taravax-7 zipped back to orbit. Yuri Crossed his arms with a smirk under his helmet.
Cayde-6: What’s with that?
Yuri: Nothin’. Just kinda nice to know someone’s keeping an eye on us and not ratting us out.
Cayde-6: You’re a hunter, don’t get used to that sense of security.
Yuri: Yeah, yeah.
Cayde-6 and Yuri got back to the tower and parted ways. Though it was only momentary as Yuri was called to the vanguard hall for a meeting about the sword. He reached the hall to find Iris, Taravax, and the whole vanguard around the table.
