The link is to my podcast where we read, discuss the theory and more! If you'd rather just read the theory here ya go!
Before we begin with this theory i think it’s important to talk about Cayde for a moment, i know we already covered Cayde’s lore in the Hunter Vanguard Lore Cast, but to really ground in this theory it’s important. Cayde, as you’re all aware, is the Hunter Vanguard, and a Vanguard is one of the leaders of the Guardian community. Sitting behind a desk and taking the lead, being in charge of people, being held responsible for not only his own actions, but for those beneath him. Essentially everything that Cayde doesnt want. He wants to relax and do his own thing, and if it wasnt for the Vanguard Dare he wouldnt even be in the position he’s in.
"It is true that finding a Hunter representative to the Vanguard has always been…difficult. Their independent point of view is not something we can survive without, though. And so, over the years, we've had Hunter mentors come and go. That is, of course, what the Dare is for." —Zavala (Cayde’s Challenge)
So now let’s look at the teaser trailer, Last Call. we see Cayde in his element here, in the heat of battle he stops to get a drink. As he does so he retells the story of the initial Cabal attack, even now calling it a “boring meeting” and “an ugly contest where everyone was winning.” Playing music to set the mood, pouring a drink, and talking to the sweeper bot as the City falls around him, called back into action by a Warlock and Hunter running by only after one of the few remaining walls of the bar falls.
And now let’s move on to the Rally the Troops trailer, which shows us that our Vanguard has been separated with Cayde and Ikora seen together in the City and Zavala outside it. The purpose of this video is to inspire Guardians to fight, at least from a lore perspective, so the obvious candidate is Zavala. He’s the Vanguard Commander, everything the Guardian populace does goes through him. But, as i said he’s separated from half the group. So the obvious choice from the B team’s inspirational speech would fall to Ikora Rey wouldnt you agree?
Well that’s what i’d think at least, she’s not shy to speaking up when she thinks she should. In the opening cinematic of The Taken King while the Vanguard looks at the Dreadnaught for the first time she talks about “needing a Warlock on there” she clearly holds herself and her mentees to a high regard. Cayde even mocks her afterwards saying “oh here we go” as if to say that she’s done this several times before.
But Ikora isnt rallying her troops, Cayde is. Now i’ll admit that Cayde rallying is likely a product of filling the gap, and pleasing the entire audience, whereas Ikora would just be a mirror of Zavala. But what if it’s more than that? What if Cayde felt pushed to step up, even so he wasnt serious in his speech. What if Ikora isnt actually there? If you watch it again you’ll see she only interacts with Cayde, and even though Cayde absolutely fails to get any reaction out of the crowd their full attention is on him.
Why wouldnt they, why wouldnt even just the Warlocks be looking to Ikora to save the speech to rally the troops and inspire them to fight? Why didnt Ikora speak up when Cayde couldnt even remember the name of Ghaul? Why is it that Ikora is barely even needed in this scene?
I think it’s because she died in the attack. Not initially, and it wont be revealed immediately within the game either, so let explain. I believe that the story of D2 will begin with Zavala’s team, that’s where our Guardian will start, getting an Opening and closing Cinematic to our first mission, which is the Rally the Troops trailer and a little extra, just like we did in the Taken King. One of the objectives shown to us in details is…
To defeat the Red Legion and confront Ghaul, you must reunite humanity's scattered heroes, stand together, and fight back to reclaim our home.
So starting on the outskirts of the City we’ll not only have to go after getting new powers and armaments, but we’ll have to push into the City’s remains and reuinite Cayde’s team and Zavalas. Now i know the immediate reaction to me saying that Ikora died in action is that “we see her in the trailer” and yes technically we do, but in my opinion that’s a misdirect, and theres a few reasons why.
Now i completely understand why people would say this isnt enough information to base this opinion on, but really there’s one line thats said in the video, followed by a select scene, a scene which was tweetered out by our very own community manager Deej.
Despite the sacrifice of many brave Guardians.
At this point we’re shown a solo shot of Ikora as if it’s her reference image when introducing her to a crowd.

Ikora is literally in the trailer standing next to cayde.

Watch the trailer and you'll find out

I like the creativity in this post, but it's a bit out there. I like to think that Ikora has matured a whole lot since her early days, and she has to put on a serious façade as a vanguard. Buuut I think she is genuinely amused by Cayde. I think she just lets him make an ass of himself for a good laugh. This is contrasted by Zavala, who is entirely humorless and sees Cayde as nuisance.
-
I think you're quite off on this one Anon. It's a bit far fetched with little to no proof. It's extremely speculative, I think you over thought this one a little bit my dude. Sorry if I seemed harsh, I wasn't trying to be. Just wanted to give some respectful criticism. 🙃

Edited by dnrobs: 4/21/2017 11:56:16 AMObviously, she is in the trailer after the tower is taken. She is standing literally next to cayde. Watch the trailer again and you'll see she is shown about 15 times. Shaxx makes it aswell.
-
I think you're reading waaaaay too far into it. Cayde spoke because he's a much more popular character plain and simple.

Edited by TrolleyProblem: 4/20/2017 4:36:42 AMI would really hate it If she did. I mean just look at the vanguard. Goody-two-shoes Zavala who essentially acts as the speaker's pet. Yes, he is a great fountain of reason, and is an astounding leader. Not to mention; he's one of the only guardians still alive who has a connection to saladin, so maybe he could lead us to the second gen of iron lords since everyone else forgot about them. (I mean, we seriously aren't just going to say they died to siva too, right?) Cayde, who is basically just a personification of the hunter mains. I mean, yes he's got quite the back story. A gambling man through and through, present during the golden age, and one of the few hunters - lore wise that is - that is able to wield all 3 of his subclasses (granted, he shows hesitancy to nightstalker, but still) And then comes Ikora. One of the few guardians that has lived out in frontier for such a long time. So long; that she even rivals records of legendary hunters. She understands all the subclasses for warlock, and unlike counterparts that were intrigued with the void, darkness, or our enemies - Such as toland, osiris, or ulan-tan - she still has a voice to speak towards the inhabitants of the city... or what will be left In a few months. She founded the hidden, and had it not been for her; it's plausible that eris would've been exiled, and we as a result, would be dead. She's one of the only stormcallers left -lore wise-. Shes possibly the only in game link to casoid (as her weapon invective bears their marks) The list just keeps going and going. It'd be a shame for bungie to kill off such an interesting character. The only reason I know any of that is because I pay attention the cards/lore. Other players just see her as another npc. It's why bungie decided to use cayde as their go-to most likely, as he's naturally likeable. Toland, osiris, saint 14, and etc are either exiled or possibly dead. Eris will be leaving the city. But they can seriously show some of the story through her, and kill that "destiny has no story" meme for good.
-
But does the -blam!-ing cryptarch get blown up? Better can he die slowly on a pile of purple ingrams that turn into blue weapons.
-
But she says Cayde's speach is inspiring...
-
What would be the point. Let's be honest, does anybody really give a shit about ikora? There has never been any attempt to build any emotional connection with ikora? She's always been relegated to flavour text on gear or brief strike loading screens. If they were going to kill someone to advance emotional connection it would be cayde-6 or Eros, they've had the most screen time. Hell, I'd more emotionally involved if they killed sweeper bot than I would with ikora.
-
Bungie sent out a D2 email a few hours ago. If you click on the link to go to the Bungie site and read the info there they describe the 3 classes and show pics of the 3 Vanguard leaders INCLUDING Ikora I don't think they would do this if Ikora was killed 20 seconds into a pre-game cut scene
-
She does not. She dies heroically, and she is replaced by her younger sister, Ikea. Spoiler:
Ikea built the Last City. That's why it fell apart so easily.
-
Sorry dear, this is really reaching. Cayd was doing the speech, one for the humour of the trailer, and two because he doesn't like to sit back. He wants the spotlight. Ikora is brace and bold, but knows when to take a step back and let another lead. She was in the trailer, and the way she acted and stood didn't imply a memory for Cayd.
-
Ikora is standing next to his "inspirational speech" when the battle for the City is clearly over, and the battle has been lost. As what remains of the Guardian force contemplates their next move. The scene with Cayde-6 in the bar was DURING the battle, as he leaves the bar you can clearly hear Zavala calling to him to rejoin the fight, as Cayde complains, "Can't a guy stop for a drink.....?" Ikora clearly survives the initial Cabal attack and the City's fall. How much further she survives into the game after that is for us to discover September 8th.
-
Love your theories anonpig, but you didn't think this one through.Ikora is seen multiple times in the trailer.

Ugh.. soundcloud rappers

Edited by knobmeoff: 4/21/2017 11:40:02 AMYour family meetings must be exciting. "so what are up to these days Kevin? How's your job? Are you seeing anybody?" "nah, I'm unemployed and I spend my time making lore posts on a random video game website." "oh" Get a life.

Good, maybe the stormcaller subclass will die with her.
-
Just a few things, it's not that Cayde wants to sit around and do nothing, he wants to be out in the field like everyone else. Also, I'm pretty sure Deej was just referring to his "warlocks master race" ideal. Overall, I think this was a bit of a stretch.
-
She was standing next to Cayde in the Rally The Troops video
-
God you do talk some waffle.
-
Wasn't she in the second trailer?
-
Oh my god, you're thinking too hard. They're just leveraging Cayde's popularity to build hype. Ikora is fine, Last Exit code means nothing, the Sekrion stones mean nothing, and there's not another VoG chest.
-
I sure hope so. Every character is pretty terrible but Ikora might as well be a cardboard cutout. Actually I take it back. It will have zero impact on any player if she dies. She should at least live long enough for us to see her character a little
