As in what may have happened in their past to look to help others, whatever they feel whether its duty or the will to help because of morals or because they can't stand to see others where they once laid?
Do people help because they're good or because they think they owe something to society?
Or because they feel guilty? Maybe they did something to someone in the same position before and they made it their wish to change their ways and help and try to put a mask on that experience.

I've experienced things that would make most people snap if they were in my situation. I've suffered quite a lot in life. I know what it's like to have everything you love taken away from you. With that, I try to help others. I strive to. It's simply that I don't want to see others experience the same feelings I've experienced.
