To all of the people who are complaining about losing gear and things being obsolete in D2
-[THIS IS COMPLETELY MY OPINION, AND JUST THAT. I AM NOT ASSERTING THAT MINE IS CORRECT, I SIMPLY WANT TO SHARE MY OPINION ON THIS COMMON ISSUE. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE THING BEFORE DOWNVOTING. OR DON'T. I'M A DISCLAIMER, NOT A COP.]
I understand. I know what it's like to have searched for weeks to find the loot you wanted. Rerolling and rerolling for that god roll Party Crasher. Running Crota dozens of times searching for a Crux (which I still haven't gotten! Rngesus halp me!) It was part of the experience, and it became part of your Guardian and their personality. But saying that all of the time you spent farming for that gear is useless just because it won't be usable in a sequel (a totally separate game) is ludicrous. There's no such issue with loot games like Borderlands. You don't carry all of your loot over (but you do get a special skin iirc which is good, more on that later.) Same with the Halo games and all of the different collectible armor pieces. It's because when you carry over all of the old content into the new, there's not really much incentive to play the new stuff. If the old stuff works, it works, and you get this feeling that it's stale and recycled. (Anyone transfer from Dragonball Xenoverse 1 to 2?) It just ends up repetitive. As I'm sure you know, there's a difference between commemoration and total loot carryover. In the transition from Year 1-2, the Moments of Triumph emblem Laurea Prima and the Old Guard shader serve as commemoration for Year One players. I have no problem with this. The gear from Year 1 carried over to Year 2 at the expense of the evasive Etheric Light. This is true but it doesn't null the commemoration. It gives people something to look back on, to show that they were a part of a great experience. Yet, it avoids becoming any kind of status symbol or indicator of skill- you don't see posts on LFG looking for people with the Caelestis shader, right? My main problem with carryover into Destiny 2 would be personal. In my opinion, which is not at all objective, if all of the loot I had were to carry over into D2, it would just feel like a glorified DLC. That isn't what we need. I propose a clean break between the games (inb4 Maoist Commie pinko) that includes a commemoration of our achievements while still becoming its own entity. In my opinion, Destiny wasn't about the loot. It was about tearing your hair out at noobs in the raid with your friends. It was about 'one more try, then I'm going.' And five tries later you had it. It was the experience of getting that first Gjallarhorn and how you felt at finding something rare and unique and new. We lose that opportunity for wonder when we've already got our set of weapons and armor and that's that. Tl;dr- OP understands the sentiment around those who want to keep their loot, but feels that it would destroy opportunities for interesting new loot by keeping people anchored in the past. Thank you for your time and I hope this was worth the read. I'm not here to start arguments, I just felt that as a Year 1 vet I could weigh in on this issue.
