PSA: Volunteer firefighters are in great demand...

This is aimed especially at the teen crowd of #Offtopic.
The volunteer fire service is in great demand for new members.
"The number of volunteer firefighters in the United States has declined by about 12% since 1984. From nearly 900,000 in 1984 to 786,000 in 2013. (NVFC)"
This may seem somewhat insignificant but it is being felt by many departments. When I joined my local department 10 years ago we were able to roll almost every truck on insignificant calls. We had about 20 very active members that were nearly always available. Today that number is about half. We are lucky to roll more than two trucks to a structure fire and have to rely on surrounding communities for additional manpower.
"While the number of volunteer firefighters is declining, the age of volunteer firefighters is increasing. (NVFC)"
Again, we've been hit here also. Of the core group of 11 five are over 40 years old. Some of our older members have minor health issues that tend to keep them in driver positions.
Recruiting is easier said than done. Unfortunately the time to gain Firefighter I/II keeps many from joining. People have family and job requirements that keeps them from being able to join. Training is at most 6 months unless you can go to an academy which is anywhere from 1 to 2 weeks.
This is where you can help make a difference. Those of you in high school have more than enough time to complete the required training. Most departments will pay for it. It's a physically and sometimes mentally demanding job but a fulfilling one. You will have the pride and satisfaction of making your community safer.
So please join if you can make the commitment.
