About
Viper’s another Warlock that’s younger compared to most. Although she hadn’t been dead long by the time she was resurrected, having been brought back within months of Twilight Gap, the City and the Tower and all its inhabitants were still in that phase of rebuilding and mourning what they’d lost, so she went for several months without any real mentorship, trying to figure things out on her own. But when she was directed to Rue’s library by Ikora, Viper found herself reading books on anything and everything she could find to fill her time, digging her heels into light theory and spending as much time as she could practicing just outside the City’s walls and in the Crucible- at which point she ran into a disheartened Bennett.
Twilight Gap had hit him hard- although he had had no problem with living the Guardian life until that point, the severity of the Fallen attack against the city and the losses sustained had brought back painful memories of the Collapse and what he’d lost, things better left buried… and in the wake of his grief, had begun to struggle with wanting to leave the Vanguard. Viper, sensing something was amiss, asked if she could travel with him. Although he was against her company at first, her persistence and offers of beer and food won him over long enough to allow them to talk.
After several hours of back and forth, Viper admitted that she hadn’t been around long enough to be able to weigh in on his decision, and told him that he needed to do what he felt was best for him even if it meant leaving the Tower, because he’d be no use to the Vanguard if his heart wasn’t in the work. After he’d made up his mind about leaving, Bennett asked if she needed anything from him, and Viper admitted that she had a favor to ask.
Since her resurrection she had wanted to return to her home settlement of Palamon to check on her family, but she didn’t want to upset her family by showing her face after she’d already been dead 13 years; so she asked Bennett to go check on her family and keep an eye on them, if he was going to be living outside the wall indefinitely, and he agreed. For the next seven years he kept tabs on Viper’s only remaining family, her sister Hallena, whom Bennett had taken to treating like his own daughter and taught her everything he knew about survival and a steady hand, until one day he returned with horrifying news.
It was a shock for Viper to see Hal again, much less resurrected in light- much less in her condition. After learning about the circumstances of Hal’s death (butchered by the dark Guardian, Dredgen Yor) and resurrection (her light tainted by lingering hive magic left behind in her corpse), Viper turned her attention to study of the Hive in attempt to reverse what had been done, while mentoring under Rue to learn how to apply her light to healing to help her sister by suppressing the pain in her body. It wasn’t until some seven or eight years later that she came to fear that she may lose Hal a second time to a dead man.
Hallena had found Yor’s infamous weapon Thorn and, because of the Hive corruption already tainting her light, had been corrupted at first touch. She believed that Yor had spoken to her from the other side, wanting her to carry on his work, and she set out on a “holy mission” to finish what he’d begun- to make sure that everyone remembered and feared the name Dredgen Yor, so that his legacy would never die, but Viper and Bennett wouldn’t have any of it. They stole the weapon in attempt to reverse the corruption but it was too late. In the end, Bennett killed Hal with Yor’s Thorn to prevent the rise of another dark Guardian, but because of his misdeeds the corruption soon took hold of him. With the loss of her sister and the loss of one of her oldest, dearest friends looming on the horizon, Viper was destitute, but she knew what she had to do. She may have lost Hal but she would not lose Bennett, not to this monstrosity. Currently she is nose-deep in Toland’s notes of the Hive and working closely with Eris Morn to find a way to bring him back without having to kill him.
