So today I want to talk about the nine. Mysterious, powerful, and generally scary. We don’t really know all that much about them, but there’s one card that dumps a whole load of possibilities. And that is the card I’m going to be discussing today. I’m going to go over the options that have some decent evidence supporting them. So let’s get to some hypothetical situations.
[This is the first part of a series of nine theories I have coming.]
The nine are survivors of the cis-Jovian colonies who made a compact with an alien force to ensure their own survival.
This is supported by a few simples quotes from Xur.
1
"We saw the colony fail, not knowing what we saw."
2
"The Awoken did not have a choice. We did."
3
"For organic life to exist it requires constant adaptation."

So if we assume this is true, we have to guess what that alien force was. I’m guessing the ahamkara. What makes me think that? The nine had a choice to something. It was a choice that the awoken didn’t have. Whatever happened to the awoken must have happened to the nine too. They chose to make a compact with an alien force, which must have given them significant power. The Ahamkara are known to make deals with people to give them power, in exchange for something else. And there conveniently happens to be ahamkara in the nine’s territory. (Jupiter)
One must wonder, What was the deal? The first quote. They “watched the colony fail”, not knowing what they saw. I suspect that the nine traded the entirety of their colony in exchange for the power to survive something. Survive what? Survive the collapse. But what was this ability? Let’s look at the awoken.
Whatever happened to the nine happened to the awoken as well, but the awoken didn’t have a choice in the matter. From Mara Sov, we can assume the awoken are born from a mix between the light and the dark as she says. “Starlight was my mother, and my father was the dark.” The nine may be very similar to the awoken, but a little more perfected/powerful. But if this change occurred because of a deal with the ahamkara, why was it forced on the awoken? Guilt.
I suspect that, if the nine did indeed trade their people for power without realizing it, they surely felt terrible about it. So when they saw the fleets trying to run from the darkness, the nine changed them to save them from the darkness that would have consumed them otherwise. They mixed their sparks of light with a bit of darkness and shouded them. The nine had a choice, but the awoken didn’t.
Alternately the nine had no hand in the awoken's transformation. The nine may have simple traded their colony for the sake of becoming powerful. The people that became the awoken may have found themselves between a rock and a hard place when they ran, so they were forced to bargain with the ahamkara (or maybe something else) to survive the crushing force that waited for them beyond Earth.
So there you have it. Hypothetically, If the nine were in fact the survivors of the cis-Jovian colonies who made a compact with an alien force to ensure their own survival, they may have made a deal with the ahamkara to save themselves. In doing so, they wiped out their own colony. Option A: Feeling guilty and knowing the fate of the people who wanted to escape, they changed those people and made them into the awoken. Option B: They underwent the same transformation as the awoken, but did so on their own terms.
Possible or not, that’s for you decide. Hope you enjoyed.

This is a theory of mine about all of the Nine, I'm just putting it here because this is the first I saw. I believe the Nine are all of the possibilities the Grimoire states, mostly because there are Nine answers to what they are, 1. The Nine are survivors of the Cis-Jovian colonies who made a compact with an alien force to ensure their survival. 2. The Nine are deep-orbit warminds who weathered the Collapse in hardened stealth platforms. 3. The Nine are ancient leviathan intelligences from the seas of Europa or the hydrocarbon pits of Titan. 4. The Nine arrived in a mysterious transmission from the direction of the Corona-Borealis supercluster. 5. The Nine are the firstborn Awoken and their minds now race down the field lines of the Jupiter-Io flux tube. 6. The Nine are Ghosts who pierced the Deep Black without a ship and meditated on the hissing silence of the heliopause. 7. The Nine are the aspects of the Darkness, broken by the Traveler's rebuke, working to destroy us from within. 8. The Nine is a viral language of pure meaning. 9. The Nine are the shadows left by the annihilation of a transcendent shape, burned into the weft of what is. Among other things, I find it hard to believe that any one of these could be the Nine alone. 7, 8, and 9 particularly seem unlikely, as Xur says the Nine wanted him here, and the other two are concepts more than actual things. I think "the Nine" is a name for a council or committee or something, comprised of all of the above explanations. Also, I find it just a tad hard to say that the fact that there are nine given explanations for something called The Nine is just a coincidence. So, yeah. I think the Nine are all of them, either as a single being, or a council of some kind.

I would believe that since there is another grimoire card that states that the "first born awoken" aka The Queen is a member of the nine the is no sense in having 2 parts state that it is the awoken. Also all of the survivors are supposed to be Cis- Jovian aka mars, earth, Venus, and mercury. The only know alien force that has made itself useful to the people of the cis-Jovian is The Traveler. Thus I believe that this card just references humans as being a part of the nine or potential exos. Also I have a done my views on who I believe the nine are so take a look and see what you think.

Or maybe they had technology similar to the Traveler's that could change The oncoming darkness to light. Something similar in technology to the Gift Mast of old. The story would go something like this: Colonists traveling from Earth had received sudden communique from Earth command, sent by the Warmind, Rasputin himself. The contents declared the identification of an incoming intersolar threat classified YUGA. The communique provided a rendezvous point in geosynchronous orbit around Jupiter near Europa. Intersolar threat confirmed YUGA, has vulnerabilities to Traveler/paracausal presence. RPTN suggests combining ships in trans solar groups A through F into cohesive defense force around Ship (capital class) Promise and usage of said ship's lightdrive/paracausal field to be extended and to envelope trans solar groups A through F in theoretical paracausal, Venka-Dalios light shield to fortify against oncoming threat YUGA. (I'm running short on time, so I'll make it quick!) Basically, with the oncoming darkness begins the annihilation of the colony ships and fleet, but there is a chance at stopping it using the flagship Promise's drive system based of of the Traveler. To overload the drive and destroy the darkness leaving many ships destroyed and damage, but with the possibility of many of the colonists and Earth being spared from death. So with the darkness on full attack, the drive is fired before the ships make it to the rendezvous point. Nine of the command crew had received an instruct from an unknown Warmind, that the drive could be enhanced to channel the massive energies of the attacking darkness through the drive and destroy the threat in a massive blast of energy. The only catch was for those nine people to be inside the drive system when it was overloaded. Having no choice nine of the drive engineers bravely went into the drive. During the overload their bodies where suffused with light energies, forming living cathodes to the drive's anode. The darkness was pulled into the reaction and the energies were funneled and built up until a singularity was formed. Just as quickly as it had formed the singularity collapsed and the result was an explosion that wiped the darkness from around the orbits of Mars and Jupiter and destroying everything, but the core and remnant of the darkness still around Pluto. The Traveler retreated to protect Earth from the blast shielding much of the planet, but the darkness was not finished and within a week's time the core remnant of the darkness had arrived. A dark mockery of the Traveler that in its rage attacked full force, ignoring the millions of survivors of the blast in the the asteroid belt; going directly for its main prize that it had pursued across the eons. Thus began the collapse and the showdown between the two powers on a small blue-green planet called Earth. Tl;dr... creation of Awoken from the colony ship survivors, the Reef from the wreckage, and the Nine who became immortal cosmic beings (in return for a debt to a certain Warmind dubbed, "AMKR"). Thanks for reading, Guardians!

It's called a pact not a " compact". Lol

Great post. Good theory but either way I'm just gonna kill shit.

I don't want to see the Nine uncovered. Can they please keep their clothes on?

How did you know there's Ahamkara on jupiter

It was my understanding that our characters in the future are the nine. Three fireteams of three. We send zur back in time to make our past lives easier.

Edited by Star-Catcher1000: 2/3/2017 3:12:58 AMYou have very good evidence. I like this theory. Here is another one (or two): https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/221553504?page=0&sort=0&showBanned=0&path=1 https://www.bungie.net/en/Forums/Post/220566072?page=0&sort=0&showBanned=0&path=1

Excellent hypothesis Fal, and a great idea overall. I look forward to the next. It's possible once you have covered them all the pieces could begin to fall into place.
-
You are probably one of the best theorists here!
-
Interesting. Very interesting indeed.

I like this

I love your theories, Fal!

Cool theory. My personal theory for the awoken is they just got caught in the blast of light emitted by the traveler but since I can't disprove your theory I geuss I'll just have to wait.
