"Robinsun.... Robinsun." A demanding voice roused me from my comatose state. "Robinsun."
As my eyes slowly focused on the night sky of the City, my body involuntarily sat up. I winced as my cheek stung from several haphazard grooves left by the crates I was against.
I blinked and looked up at Zavala. "Sir?..." I said quietly.
"Robinsun... We... we ah..." He fumbled with his words as his face was taught with rage.
"Couldn't find him?..."
Zavala's eye twitched in frustration. "No... Not a trace... No witnesses, no DNA residue, nothing..."
I simply nodded and leaned back up against the crates.
"We will find that b****** Robinsun." Zavala's voice swelled. "I have Cayde and his possy searching the outer perimeter and all available Guardians are searching every nook of this place. He won't..!"
"Thank you Zavala..." I said quietly as I closed my eyes, depression grasping my throat.
Zavala paused and sighed angrily before walking away, leaving me to sit in utter silence as the noticeably cold air chill clung to my exposed face.
"Hey... You will catch a cold..." Charles voice piped up. "Want me to put your helmet on?..."
"No... I can atleast feel something at the moment..." I said.
"Oh... oh alright. Well don't... don't get mad if an icicle forms on your nose! Ah ha ha.. ha... ha... hm..."
"Charles... Just deter anyone that comes to talk to me... Please?"
"Ok. Can do boss! No one's gonna get past me."
I felt the corners of my mouth twitch into a smile before falling prone once again. "Thanks..." Silence continued between the two of us except the occasional ship that wandered in to the docking bay. My sense of time slipped as I began to hazily drift off until Charles' voice snapped me back.
"Hey um... He really doesn't want to talk right now so... How are you feeling buddy?"
I opened my eyes slightly to see Laurentine standing infront of me, still clutching James in his hand. He was heavily bandaged and wearing an overcoat too large for him.
"That's ok..." Laurentine looked down at the ground. "No one was watching me so I came to check on him..." He started to turn around.
"Wait..." I said out of impulse as I sat up. He paused. "You can sit here... if you want."
Laurentine nodded and sat next to me. He quietly ran his thumb over James' shell and looked down at him. His eyes had heavy bags under them as his strangely blackish blue skin contrasted harshly with his brightly colored sea green eyes.
I noticed that this time, he wasn't hiding his face from me. He had a faintly baby face complexion with a rounded jaw. His skin had the transparent pulsing glow of an Awoken but was much darker and had a brown undertone, making it seem like he had two layers of skin.
I gestured towards him. "Your hood is down."
"I know." He replied matter-of-factly.
Charles leaned in towards me. "Well looks like my suspicions in the beginning were correct, he is weird."
"Charles..." I groaned.
"No really! He's weird! As in unique! Or atleast rare."
"Care to explain?"
"Well when an Awoken mommy and a Human daddy love each other veeeery much..."
"Charles now is not..." I paused and looked at Laurentine. "What?"
"Yea..." He glanced over at me. "I'm a half-breed. Something the Awoken truly hate... Before I was a Guardian, they would pay a pretty penny to have my hide..."
I blinked and nodded. "That would explain why you hid from everyone."
"Yea... I was treated like an exotic animal... The only one who would stand up for me would be my dad..." He slightly held up James. "Even if he was a angry drunk..."
I sat in silence looking at my friend, pain radiating from his face as he stared at his Ghost. I set my hand on his good shoulder before speaking. "Regardless of that fact, I'm right here for ya." He slowly looked up at me, tears pooling in his eyes. "The world has given us a lot of s***. Our pasts, the Academy, that f***ing b******. All we can do is fight back."
Laurentine sniffed and wiped his eyes with his sleeve. "Uh huh..."
"We will get back up to 110% and we will show them what happens when we get knocked down. Then, nothing will break us."
Laurentine gave a small laugh. "Little ambitious?"
"Not for us."
Laurentine nodded. "Alright then." For the first time in a while, his mouth formed a genuine smile. I smiled back.
Soon something latched onto my head as I felt tears stream down the side of my face. "You guys are best friends!!" Charles wailed. "There's so much positive emotion!!"
I let out a sigh as Laurentine once again smiled and chuckled. His eyes suddenly darted to the side and he pulled a hood over his head.
I turned to see a Warlock moving with purpose. He stopped a few feet infront of us and spoke. "Laurentine Heverson and Josiah Robinsun?"
"That be us." I replied.
"We just wanted to inform you that Kate-456 is in extensive care and is recovering."
"Good... How's Angelica?"
"She is also recovering. However, the Speaker has stated that she should be restricted from active duty until she fully gets past her trauma."
I slowly nodded. "Alright. Is Kate able to take visitors?"
"Ah... Well... Some friendly faces may calm her down some... Can you move?"
"Yea." I slowly stood up and rubbed my cheek while offering my shoulder to Laurentine. He nodded and hefted himself to his feet, allowing me to steady him.
We slowly followed the Warlock as he lead us to the North Tower and towards a more secluded part of the complex reserved for the sick or those who needed less interaction with others.
The Warlock knocked on a door and waited for a response.
"Yea!?"
"Lewis! It's Raymen. I brought Kate-456's team to talk..."
The door swung open as an exasperated Warlock quickly left. "Yea Ray, that's great! Hey I'm going on break. Probably indefinitely! Watch after the psy, I mean, patient for me!"
"Lewis!! Where are you going?!" The Warlock, Raymen, held up his arms in a 'what the f***' motion and sighed. "Well... I'll be outside of you need me..."
I nodded and helped Laurentine in as Raymen closed the door behind us. The room was dimly lit and bare except for a large bed and some medical supplies against the wall. Kate was curled up in a ball, cradling a helmet that was sloppily painted green as she silently babbled to herself.
Her Ghost, Damien, looked at us as we entered. "Well... good timing I suppose."
"I thought they said she was recovering?" I said as I set Laurentine into as chair and leaned against a wall for support.
"Oh physically, she's tip top. Almost got that previous Warlock into a head lock and gave him a few bruises for trying to take that helmet. Her mind on the other hand..."
Kate suddenly gave a small scream and looked around, as if she just woke up from a bad dream. Her eyes adjusted and looked at us. "Guys... Wait... Did they find Rexxy!?" She stood up and dropped the helmet. Wet paint smeared her front and arms as she jumped up and down in excitement. "He's back isn't he?!"
"Kate..." I started to say. Laurentine simply sat in silence.
"We have to go meet him!!" She dashed towards the door and tried to open it. "Why did they lock it?! Damien open it, we have to go meet him!"
Damien floated in silence as he watched in sadness.
I walked towards her. "Kate listen..."
"We have to go! He will be missing me! I can't let him be alone." Her eyes shone with focused determination.
"Kate."
She half turned to me but continued to talk at the door. "You said he was here yea?! Then why..."
"Kate!" I yelled. She jumped a little and her eyes snapped to look at me. "He's not back yet... They can't find him."
Her body slowly stopped moving in excitement and settled into a hauntingly still position. Her lights dimmed down very low as her jaw quivered. "But... Zavala said..."
"They are trying but it's likely they won't find him."
Her eyes began to stream tears. "But they promised... they would find him..." Her body shook in sadness as she looked at her hands. Her fingers smeared the green paint along the tips and she sobbed. "They promised to find Rexxy..."
"I know that but..."
Kate's legs gave out as she collapsed and began to sob loudly as tears and green paint splattered against the floor.
I paused for a moment before kneeling down beside her. "Kate listen, we..." She latched onto me and began sobbing into my shoulder. I sighed and held her close, patting her back to calm her. "We will find him."
Kate tried to speak inbetween her sobs. "B but if if... they c... can't f f find..."
"That's doesn't matter." I said. "We know Rex better than they do. Plus, they will have to give up eventually." Kate looked up at me with pitiful eyes. "Once we all get back up to strength, we will go find him."
Laurentine spoke up. "Count on it."
Kate's jaw quivered as her mouth formed a wobbly smile. "Y... Yea!... Ok!"
I smiled and helped her up. "We will show them that we can't be broken. Not now, or ever."
