Lives of ARC v2 Ch. 3: Dûr From the Void

Malikeith looked around the room, to all the people bathing in the gold. "The King has just signed a peace treaty with the House of Dunes, and these treasures are the 'seal of the pact'. Fallen will be here soon to take their share of the treasure." "So, Tau'la and the House of Dunes are finally at peace with each other?" Rex asked skeptically. "Apparently," Jaeger replied. "And yes, that means you can't shoot 'em when they show up..." he continued. "Ugh, d***it..." Rex said before sharing a laugh with Jaeger. Malikeith and Luther found another door in the back of the treasury. They looked at it and studied the pictographs all around the rings. "What do you think it is?" Malikeith asked. "A glyph lock..." Luther said, both answering Malikeith's question, and stating from sheer awe. "This is ancient! I'm talkin' Pre-Golden Age! These were reserved for the most sacred chambers of a temple!" Luther looked to his partner. "The Reschee people must've adapted the door during the Dark Age... A good choice too, these doors were simple, and complex all at once." "What would you say is behind it?" Malikeith asked. "If I had to guess... the crypt of kings," Luther said with a smile. "... All the kings that ruled this kingdom, stored behind this ancient lock. What secrets are they hiding?" Malikeith asked as his morale lifted. There were three rings, each with different pictographs. The glyphs were seven figure, a serpent, and a scepter and sword crossing. Luther studied the different symbols. "It's a code. We have to turn the rings in a certain order to unlock it." "What could the code be?" Buggsy asked. "Try the script we saw at the entrance hall," Luther said. Everyone looked at each other. No one remembered what it said. "I'll go back," Byron declared before bolting off. The remaining five people studied the lock and played with the mechanisms. Rex and Jaeger tested spinning the rings, which was extremely hard since the rings grinded against the wall socket. Buggsy sat down and fumbled with the chipped off rocks that had fallen to the ground. Byron ran back into the room. He hunched over, trying to catch his breath. Everyone waited for what he had to say. Why was he running? What demons, hiding in here, were chasing him? He stood up walked over to Luther. "It read, 'Temple of Naedar, Lord of Serpents'..." Luther looked back at the rings. "Naedar must have been the king that ruled here. Look for the symbol that looks like a person." Rex and Jaeger spun the outer ring so that the glyph of seven people was on top. "Lord. A lord was royalty, but they did claim land for the king... So, the sword and scepter will be next," Luther continued. Rex and Jaeger spun the middle ring. "Finally, serpent. Obviously, that would be the snake." The final ring spun into place. Nothing happened. "Was that the right order?" Malikeith asked. "I thought so..." Luther answered. Suddenly, writing above the door began to glow a bright blue, and so did the centerpiece of the door. "What does it say, Luther?" Rex asked as he backed away from the door. "This is cryptic," Luther whispered to himself. "It says, 'Only the powers of a Revenant shall break the ancient magics cast upon the seal'." "What the h*** does that mean?!" Byron asked. "That, I don't know..." Luther said, defeated. "I'm telling you, this is a bad idea!" Vladimir yelled, but no one listened. Malikeith stared at the glowing blue seal on the door. "Could it mean the Light?" "Well, back in the Dark Age was when precursor Guardians began coming back to life. People during that time would've believed that these Light wielders were spirits, or Revenants... Sooo... maybe..." Luther shrugged his shoulders. "Wouldn't hurt to try..." Malikeith channeled Light to his hand and placed it on the seal. The massive gate began spinning automatically then separated, opening a path to the next room. Everyone was awestruck. Malikeith took a step in, but a loud noise followed by howls caught the group's attention. "It's the Fallen," he said. "Make sure they get their share." The five people left Malikeith to look around. The room had seven crypts in the massive room. Each one was engraved in the image of the men that lay inside them with amazing detail. They set around a podium in the center of the room. On the podium was a gauntlet. The whole relic was made of scales of some creature, and by the shoulder was a small orb floating between two claws. Malikeith, as if no longer in control of his actions, took off his left gauntlet off and reached his arm in the ancient artifact. "Malikeith..." the voice whispered again. The man clenched his helmet tightly, but he couldn't get the voice out of his head. "Who are you?" Malikeith asked, his lips never moving. "Who I am is of no importance..." "What's going on? Where are you?" "My form has perished, but my presence remains. And, I'll continue to exist through you..." "It's the relic!" Malikeith exclaimed. "It once belonged to the warlord Naedar. Through it, I granted Naedar power to match his birthright dominion over this kingdom. All I asked was that he ruled in my name." "What was his birthright?" "Naedar was once a Risen like you; he wielded the Light that I sense in you now. He used his powers to rule over Allt Sjándi along with six other Risen. But it was I who helped him rise and become a powerful Warlord. However, he succumbed to the power, and lost sight of his purpose. Naedar then turned against me and used his powers to challenge me, claiming that the powers were his alone, and that he was the Lord of Serpents!" "Who are you?!" Malikeith asked again. "I am Dûr, from the Void... Oh, bearer mine..."
