Ok guys, listen; I want to talk about Ion vs Northstar. Ion destroys Northstar in every aspect. Laser core is better than flight core. Northstars sniper has slow bullet velocity. She has no defense *tether sucks and you know it*. Her little rocket makes me tickle as I walk away from its aoe. Listen; I wish she was better, but she definitely needs a buff big time!
Meanwhile; Ion has amazing defense in vortex shield. Super fast travel time on the shoulder shot sniper. Splitter does decent damage after you fire your two shoulder shots. And laser core is amazing. Sure trip-wire sucks but who cares? I like to throw them down near door ways and watch pilots stare at them and explode shortly later.
I challenge anyone to convince me that Northstar is better than Ion. Share any stories or clips with me. Let's get the ball rolling. Ion, Ronin, Legion, Scorch are elite. Tone and Northstar? Meh.

I would rather use Ion as a sniper over Northstar, but I would be busy using Ronin.
-
I like playing north star because it's pretty satisfying, but in all seriousness the flight core is complete garbage
-
I haven't played Ion much, but I'm enjoying my time as Northstar.
Until the enemy team is full of Tones. Then Legion comes in to kick ass.
-
Well duh. Northstar is a support titan.
-
Northstar is easily my favorite titan, and I hate the fact that everything you say is true. The next patch needs to have some serious rebalances.
-
Scorch is best sniper of course silly plebeians
-
Not really. Maybe for goosing but that laser doesn't compare in damage. Its only pro is the speed. You can hold the rail gun charged while in cover and dash in and out of cover where as the laser has a charge time before it auto fires. Both have their pros and cons. If it was titanfall 1 style where you could mix all the options for titans than the laser wouldn't matter because Northstars main draw back is its lack of a defensive ability and the weakest chasis. The railgun was beast with a particle wall and atlas chasis. Combined with that damage core and you could damn near one shot titans at full charge.

I'm a nightmare with Northstar as long as I don't find myself samiched between 2 legions or tones
-
Ive only played ronin so far
-
Northstar is sooo bad
-
On paper ion is way better , but it all comes down to the players
-
Ronin is the best sniper out there.

Edited by Zmoney518: 12/24/2016 11:01:43 PMIon G11.13, NS 8.somethin. First off, Tone is definitely the most universally competitive chassis you can run. So I don't play it. If you're a competent Ion pilot you should be able to outgun Northstar at range 1on1, which leads me directly to what you missed. If you know that, and you're standing there with your Northstar trying to duke it out with a good Ion you're wrong. If he's bright, he will forego the sheild for the laser shot. (Same goes for Ion v Ion btw if anyone was wondering) Get a shot off, hope he gets distracted and hit again, or reposition for a better strongpoint and attempt ambush strikes. I tend to place traps near corners about 20 meters on the side of my enemy so that I can make controlled fallbacks and they get stuck before rounding the corner (while I'm throwing cluster at their feet and charging up while walking backward or flying). If all else fails, Ions weakness is the limitation on her damage output. Dodge a laser shot while charging up a railshot, then zoom and fire (or better yet throw a cluster at the ground or pop smoke before doing this). I will win 1on1 with most titans at least 90% of the time. An aggressive tone who discards the shield to continue advancing after it soaks up one charged shot, and the odd ronin who doesnt use up phase before landing in a tether are big problems. By the way, its incredibly gratifying to sweep kick a Ronin who apparently never encountered a Northstar player who didnt automatically book it... In the right situation, if teammates hold frame in LTS Ive led the lobby over legions for dmg. Cluster in tunnel lanes+tether+rail shots finished up with core (used on doomed or close enemies only) really stacks up. Ive also had the pocket collapse repeatesly and done 5000 over the course of 3 rounds lol. If your plan goes awry, its very likely to cost you at minimum half health. TL:DR Northstar is all about planning. If your position isn't advantageous, find a new one. Ion is my 1st love, but with Northstar, as they say, no risk - no reward. And the reward is Sah-weeeeeet! Haha.

While im sure it is likely impossible to sway your opinion... Ill juat say i can stand ontop of the escape ship and ill leave it at that.
-
Instead of rockets, northstar's core should be the flight but with charged rail guns on the shoulders instead. If northstar is gonna be that weak, make the core good.
-
Just one of the many reasons Titan flop is a failure Ion does everything north star can do Just better And ions core actually does damage Tone still out pressures than ion or legion but without sacrificing cqb or resource management Legion also out dps's Northstar and ion at range and in cqb Respawns famous balance

Edited by Psychic Donuts: 12/24/2016 5:29:38 PMUnfortunately, Ion is very capable of doing the same if not more damage at what should be Northstar's range. I think they should just make his gun have a damage dropoff of just before said range. That would leave the sniping to the sniper titan.

Ronin is my main titan

Edited by Dinorush: 12/24/2016 3:16:23 PMI think they play slightly different rolls with their sniping aspects. But in general, Northstar isn't as useful. She is very good in team fights because she can snipe more often than ion, does more damage, break shields (which Ion cannot) and her cluster mission is decent aoe damage as long as you place it correctly. Also, Ion's laser suffers from dropoff; once it exceeds a distance, it dissipates, whereas northstar's projectiles don't. Other than that, Ion is probably more useful: her laser shot is much better at killing pilots, and is generally easier to hit with due to no travel time. It also requires no charge up, just the animation to pull it out, and 2 can be fired back to back. However, doing so leaves you with no options so it should only be done if you know you'll be safe or have cover. And if you choose not to devote yourself to sniping you have the splitter rifle and the vortex shield which are decent assault/cqb tools, which northstar has none of. Personally, I think Ion is better more of the time, but Northstar is better in fights where you can constantly see the enemy and have teammates that have their attention. She is also lighter and can thus get around quicker. Her flight core isn't that great, however if you have viper thrusters and you use it off a dash you go really fast, which is great for chasing or being prepared to help a teammate. Otherwise just use it from your sniping position in teamfights if the enemy doesn't have much cover from you. TL;DR: Northstar is a better teamfight sniper. Ion is better overall.

Tone=Mustardrace

Okay but when the -blam!- did ion become a sniper

I play quite a tonne of NS and good Ion pilots are just awful to play against. They know how to tank every charged rifle shot and and still pelt you with their beam when you dash out for a shot. Plus, all of her abilities out burst Flightcore. I still kill a fair few Ions, if you can take them by surprise and bait them into a choke. I still choose NS anyway though, she's my bae
