The sun balanced perfectly on the summit of Felwinter's Peak. It's brilliant, radiant light pierced through the grey clouds as the last drops of water dripped down to the earth. The humid air still lingered over the Tower, but the downfall was over.
Victor stood just outside his rundown apartment. He looked over the hallway balcony, down at the city. With one hand, he pulled out a cigar, with his other, a silver lighter with the titan symbol-- a memory of the Battle of Six Fronts. Smoke floated from the bud and lingered around the titan's head. He puffed out another breath of smoke then leaned against the railing.
Victor knocked the ash off the edge of the Tower, letting it flow with the gentle breeze of cool air. A door opened. He looked to his right as a titan with orange and white armor stepped out into the hallway. The ghost, Kendrick, shut the door behind him. "Captain Riekel," the titan said solemnly.
"Lord Shaxx," Victor replied. "Another day on the job?" He asked after exhaling another breath of smoke.
"No rest for the weary, son... Not until the Darkness is defeated." Shaxx took the cigar Victor handed him. The two looked out at the Traveler. The relic barely alive. "How are the new recruits?"
"They're somethin' else. Couple of good kids. The Vanguard is lucky to have them, but I'm still against them coming with me to Mars..." Victor sighed deeply.
"I heard the Martian theater was looking in our favor."
"Yes, the Desert Fox Ajax, came by last night. Said that the Cabal are losing ground on most fronts."
"That's great. I grew up in Freehold. Such a shame that those imperial bas****s overran it," Shaxx shifted his stance as he remembered the beautiful city that it once was.
"Nonetheless, I don't think they need to enter that h***hole..." Victor snarled a little. Everyday he counted how many troops he lost there.
"Captain..." Lord Shaxx said as he faced the Guardian. "... you're not training a couple of pansies here. It was their destiny to fight the Darkness. The Traveler saw it, Commander Zavala sees it. You need to accept their fate."
"Shaxx, I've accepted that I can't bring the men and women currently down there home. I would be down there right now, but I'm here training these two. I think Mars, at this point, is a lost cause!" Victor slammed his hand on the rail.
"You'd rather let the Darkness win?! No cause is a lost one, Captain! Every soldier dead, every Guardian lost, every bit of Light drained is for the cause of the reclamation of what once was!" Lord Shaxx sighed, trying to calm down. "Don't make your decision lightly, Victor. You still got some time before you return to Mars." Lord Shaxx threw the cigar over the edge and walked away.
As the sun flew higher in the sky, Victor returned to his "private seat" on a set stairs. He laid his back against one of the four giant pillars and checked his orange and silver helmet, then scrubbed it clean. He turned the visor to him and looked at his reflection. Someone else was in the reflection as well.
"How can I help you, Cayde?" Victor asked.
Cayde spun around and leaned against the pillar. "Oh, I'm just wondering how my boy's doing?"
"Matson Murdock? He's an aggressive player. He has the spirit, but he is still reckless. If he keeps it up, he could be a great hunter." Victor started scrubbing the rifle, cleaning every crevice on it.
"You know... That'll only happen if someone were to train himmm..." Cayde glanced down at the titan.
Victor froze. He placed the gun down and looked up to the hunter. "Did the Commander put you up to this?"
"Ummm... Oh, look at the time! I... I... I got some paperwork to do!" Cayde jumped over the rail and walked back to the Vanguard Hall. Victor huffed then continued to clean his rifle.
Victor finished cleaning his gear and was enjoying the view. Across the plaza, he saw Matson cradling his ghost. Victor watched. Matson held the ghost close to him, then tossed Panoptes over the rail then climbed up on it himself!
Victor quickly hopped to his feet and rushed over. "Matson? What are you--" The hunter jumped! "MATSON!" Victor looked over the edge. The hunter was already out of sight. "MATSON?! WHAT THE H***?!" Victor began pounding the rail repeatedly.
"Captain?! What's wrong?!" Laurel asked as she ran over.
"Matson and Panoptes jumped!" He yelled furiously.
"What?!" Laurel looked over the rail as well. She began to cry.
"Hiya, folks!" Matson yelled as he jumped up from the narrow ledge below the railing.
"The name of!..." Victor yelled as he jumped back. The hunter had been cloaked in invisibility the whole time. He and Panoptes were laughing hysterically. "Why I ought to!..."
"Uh, oh..." Matson said, instantly filled with fear. Victor grabbed him by the collar of his shirt and swung him over the rails, slamming him on his back. "Oww..." Matson weakly moaned as he lurched in pain.
"You, stupid son of a b****!" Victor yelled at the grounded hunter. "What do you have to say for yourself?!!"
A small smile squeezed through the hunter's contorted face of pain. "On a scale of one to ten... How scared were you?..."
