A question for the motorcycle riders of bnet
It's high time I become more self reliant in way of getting around - everyone I know in my age group is either learning to drive or [i]knows[/i] how. That said, I've a bit of a phobia when it comes to driving a car and although I've never ridden a motorcycle, for some reason I've always been convinced that would be easier for me to learn and in the long run better for me.
So, my question to anyone that it may apply to is; how hard is it to learn how to ride a motorcycle if you've never rode one before? Any tips / suggestions on how to go about learning? If it matters, for frame of reference, I'm 23.

If your new to cars and bikes, and have your heart set on riding. Then may I suggest maybe for your first bike buy something with a DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission). These bikes are semi and sometimes fully automatic which could make things easier for you. Because instead of worrying about gears and the clutch, it means that you can concentrate on the hazards around you instead. After which you have gotten used to the roads and riding, then maybe switch over to learning the manual transmission. Though if your keen to really learn how to ride, go for the manual option. For when using the clutch probably you can do the cone weave more easily on the permits test, for it will always be able to turn more sharper.

1 ReplyI would say if you have a phobia of driving a car i would learn to drive an suv or a truck. While motor cycles are not to hard to learn and are quite fun to ride, the vigilance that goes along with riding one in traffic is not really for a novice driver. Many times you have to be extremely aware of your surroundings as most motorist dont pay enough attention and are extreme hazords for bikers.

That being said, I started riding dirt bikes around the age of 12 and did pop the clutch, wheelie and crash during my first attempt. Many colleges offer motorcycle courses for a few weeks that culminates with you taking the tests and getting your license. These classes aren't required but if you've never ridden, they may be worth checking out. As someone who has never ridden or driven a manual transmission there is a little bit of a learning curve but a few hours of practice and you will have it down. I find motorcycle riding very freeing and enjoyable but there are some drawbacks. Rain and cold weather can really ruin your day. Loose gravel on turns can cause a wipe but the worst are other drivers. You have to be very aware of the vehicles around you and what they are doing because sometimes they can't see you. If you have never driven anything, think of the purpose of getting a vehicle. A car has much more utility uses and storage capabilities.
