The Weekly Patrol Quest: A good idea, once again executed poorly

Destiny seems to be full of good ideas not used to their full potential. Most people I assume are familiar with the weekly patrol quest given by Shiro-4. The first week of Rise of Iron I was excited by the prospect of it. The following week I was left a bit disappointed. As you may remember this, and the Artifact quest given by Tyra Karn, are the first instances of repeatable quests in Destiny. Such is to say a quest that once it is completed can be reacquired and completed again. Since there has not been repeatable quest before perhaps it lead me to being presumptuous in thinking it would be anything more than just that. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Those that have done the weekly patrol quest regularly know the requirements are to complete 5 kill missions, 3 assassination missions, 3 quarantine missions, and 4 more patrol missions of any kind while doing Patrol in the Plaugelands. Simple for the most part (until you can't get the right missions to spawn). It provides players with a reason to do patrol, as the rewards for completion are quite significant. However it is the same requirements every week. Initially I was hoping that perhaps the missions involved would shift around each week given the various different type of patrol missions available. Maybe one week instead of 5 kill missions and 3 assassination missions you would have to complete 5 recovery missions and 3 reconnaissance missions. Just make repeating the quest every week not feel so routine. Beyond my realistic expectations this idea alone has great potential outside of just the Plaugelands. It would have been nice if every week not only were the required missions different, but also the location. One week you need to complete X, Y, and Z patrol missions in the Plaugelands, but next week you need to complete X, C, and D patrol missions on Mars. This not just keeps the weekly patrol quest interesting but also keeps all planets/locations relevant to the endgame. Like how often do you find yourself doing Patrol on the Moon? It's far too late for any of this to matter for Destiny, but it's something to be considered for for Destiny 2. In the same line these quests could be made even more interesting if every location had a unique patrol mission such as Quarantine is unique to the Plaugelands. Then changing the location isn't just a shift in the scenery but for example if the quest requires you to go to Venus you get to do a mission that is somewhat fresh because when you did the quest last week on Mars that missions was not available to you in that location. TL;DR : A Dreg day keeps the Archon away.
Start after the line.
• Patrol just kinda sucks. It always has. That was one of the letdowns when Destiny released. They talked about how you can load into any planet, meet up with friends, and explore those plants to your heart's desire, while live online events took place with other players in the world. Sounded really seamless and expansive. I thought it was going to be open world, full of places to explore and NPC quests to retrieve like Skyrim or Witcher 3. I thought the Public Events would be less scripted, more like something a Dev Live team kept up with weekly, and it'd be like assaulting a Cabal bunker where they've captured a valuable target where it took loads of guardians just to do. I dunno how to explain it, but it was just none of those things. The open world is just a bunch of mini areas cobbled together, and next to zero reason to explore. It isn't like open world games where you head out into the world and never know what you're going to come across. I used to love just walking aimlessly in Skyrim and coming across like a bandit cave full of loot and enemies and it's own little touch of story. Patrol missions are just the most mundane fetch quests. Very scripted Major battles. Even the most recent addition of the Siva Patrol quests are just "go here. Kill a few enemies. Get tiny fraction of rep. Move along." Enemies that are scattered about are just laughably easy. The most interesting thing to do used to be the "Wolves Prowling" thing, and even THAT was just a "kill waves" sort of thing. I actually thing this is THE core thing holding Destiny back. Raids are great, strikes are cool, crucible is still pretty fun and challenging, but the current way of playing is basically just load up every week, repeat endgame content, complete mundane quests, pray for RNG. level up to new cap. If it were more focused on the open world MMO/RPG elements, there'd be way more reason to play. God just to land on mars and explore Mars for forgotten settlers, rare dead orbit scout camps, rogue Fallen gangs, etc, all with their own new story driven quests with cool loot/items... man What could have been.
