It's really simple:
Hilary's message was "I will protect you", "I will defend you", "I will stand up for you"
Trump's message was "You've been cheated", "You've been attacked"
The biological response to the former is to do nothing.
The biological response to the latter is fight or flight, and flight isn't an option for working class people.
If you compare the exit polls with voter data, you'll see that Hillary had enough supporters to make the difference, but who stayed home. They felt they didn't need to take any action because they've been told over and over that they are entitled.
That's pretty much it. In fact, I'm surprised the race was even this close, it is a real testament to the democratic get out and vote effort, but the campaign was flawed from the beginning.

Also don't forget that if you were an open Trump supporter you would have your name dragged through the mud so most supporters would stay quiet. This would get the illusion that Hillary would win in a landslide. It's what happend in my country with Brexit still half of my friends think I voted to stay even though I voted to leave cause they would have been upset and we might not be as good friends as we are.
