Chapter 2 - A Family Affair
Verse 2:1 - The End of Hope
The exalted champions of the High War stood crowded and huddled together before the throne of Oryx in the darkness of his Dreadnaught. The Warpriest stood, signaled for quiet among the thronging Hive. He raised his Boomer high above his head and fired a lob of heavy arc energy. It burst and scattered catching the attention of the battle scarred congregation. Though fearsome and mighty, they had been subdued. They waited intently to hear the words of their wretched god-king Oryx as he bestowed a great task and honor upon his son.
"Listen!" Oryx demanded. His voiced carried such authority, such force, that even the walls of the Dreadnaught trembled at it. "We fight our battle against the Sky; a force that takes pleasure in its lies of peace and sickening offerings of prosperity. It presents a false hope to those who have not yet learned the true ways of life. The Traveler is the Sky's primary agent and has eluded us for millennia." Oryx gestured to his twin daughters who floated on pedestals at either side of his throne.
Ir Anuk spoke first. "We have tracked the Traveler to a small star system possessing only one sun."
Ir Halak gave her report next. "The few planets there have already been corrupted by the Light of the Traveler and teem with organisms that have been vainly influenced to believe themselves worthy of life."
"The Traveler is stationary again. No more will it flee my blade or escape our hunger." said Oryx.
Oryx stood from his throne, the Hive before him kneeled. He issued a command.
"Crota, come forth!"
The sky above ignited and began to burn bright with green fire. The screeching sound of a wound opening could be heard. A portal in the sky opened and a torrent of emerald flames rained down before Oryx. The fire began to swirl and take shape. Every licking flame danced and moved at the command of an unknown force as they formed a towering ethereal Knight. Crota had come to receive his charge. He held his sword in his hands and presented it to his father as an offering.
The Knight Thalnok made sure to bow himself more than he had been already as though to show his extreme devotion to Crota. His attempt at reverence made him look all the more like a fool.
Oryx addressed his son. "I have called you here before the mighty and the strong for a purpose. You have been given a task."
"Speak father. Give the command and I will obey. Present the prey and I will rend it and devour its flesh. Show me the Light and I will extinguish it."
"The Traveler has settled again. It resides now with a new race to deceive and render unfit for existence.
"It spreads weakness like a corruption" Crota said to himself angrily. "I will break open this Traveler and drink its Light. I will feast upon the false hope that it offers for I am Crota, Eater of Hope. You have named me thus."
"Well spoken" said Oryx with a slight smile. "Prepare yourself for war."
The Hive of the High War were satisfied with what they had heard. They roared and raised their boomers and cleavers high in excitement of finally destroying their adversary.
"Father" called a large and fearsome Knight. "We will prepare for war as well! My Darkblades will cut this feeble race apart as we did the Taishibethi at the Golden Amputation. We will act with the cunning and deceit of Savathun herself to wipe them from existence as we did the Dakaua!"
This Knight offered his promises of victory and bloodshed to his king but Oryx did not respond with the same enthusiasm.
"This lofty task is for Crota alone to accomplish" the king growled. "He will not fail for he is the end of hope." Oryx then addressed his court as a whole. "Return to your posts. We have worlds to raze and I will accept only the sharpest blades in my service." His eyes lingered for a moment on the lone Knight who stood now in confusion. Oryx smiled to himself before turning and taking his leave with his War Priest.
The lone Knight stood among his peers in a daze. He was unaware of their departure as his thoughts were now distant. "Alak-Hul has no charge?" He asked himself. "Alak-Hul is lord of the Darkblades. How can a commander lead if he has direction?" He could feel frustration rising, giving way to anger. "An idle blade grows dull and weak. Alak-Hul must remain strong. Alak-Hul will be sharpest blade in this crusade against the Light." When he had finished his ramblings to himself he departed as well.
