So, as I do from time to time, I oggled ol' Xur and tried to decide what class he would be. Hunter, Titan, or Warlock. For the first time, I realized he has a patchwork of all three class specific gear. The hood of a hunter cloak, the bond of a warlock, and the mark of a titan.
That previous thought made me simply say "oh neat, Xur is able to rock whatever he feels like". Fast forward 3 hours now. Mid crucible match, I verbalize the thought "Holy shit! The Nine! They're masters of all 9 subclasses!" at my team. I explained myself, apologized for the scare I gave them, and we chatted for a bit about how cool a concept that is. Also, mentioning how monstrously terrifying a striker titan with throwing knives and self rez is. Let that image settle in...
So, likely, this is nothing. But it was a cool little "ah ha!" moment that I deemed interesting enough to share, seeing as we really know almost nothing about Xur and The Nine. Please, discuss!
TL;DR - What if The Nine are masters of all 9 subclasses and can freely utilize any and all abilities.
EDIT 1: I am fully aware this is highly unlikely everyone. It's a cool concept to spark some conversation. Let's keep this a toxic free post, as those are rare enough to come by on these forums. I am enjoying all the feedback though!

I still see the 9 as nine bungie employees sitting around a conference table debating on how they're going to screw us over for the week. Been here awhile so let me throw this out there "should we sell sunbreakers again?" "Seriously? We've had him sell them two weeks in a row" "I know and it'll drive the player base insane!"

Edited by DigitalNinja: 10/31/2016 12:18:37 AMI thought it was established that the nine aren't even related to the traveler or light, let alone the guardians.. They're Jovians, staying far out of our reach in the outer planets.

Oh god, I can imagine Xur high Titan skating then shotgun storm caller meleing, then when he's corners he shadesteps away and pops blade. Eww

Edited by Craggle: 10/31/2016 11:40:00 AM"A titan with blink?! Pffft." Then imagines titan skating blinking with universal remote and no backup plans. "... (sob)(sob)...WHYYYYYYY!!!!... (more sobbing)..."

I've seen this theory brought up before. It doesn't take into account that the Titan/Warlock/Hunter class division is a Guardian structure. The Nine are not beings of light and have no reason to even be connected with the abilities used by Guardians. Also Rise of Iron suggests that the classes might actually be a recent division. Before the City Age you had Guardians like Felwinter, apparently a warlock but capable of using shoulder charge. Guardians back then clearly didn't stick to a specific set of abilities.

Edited by KuroiAkuma: 10/30/2016 6:28:37 PMtitan vanguard hunter vanguard warlock vanguard cryptarch gun smith shaxx new monarchy dead orbit future war cult theres ur 9 and xur is the pawn in their conspiracy black market scheme u go out and fight earning engrams coins marks glimmer then u get back to the tower all excited and decrypt all the stuff u have but u get nothing and thats bcus the cryptarch holds back all the exotics he gets except for just enough random exotic decodes to keep us coming back he gives that to xur which asks u to pay strange coins (for ur own exotics) but in the meantime due to lack of gear u have to go and spend marks to get the gear together the gunsmith provides cryptarch with random crap for the engrams and to take ur glimmer in the process while also getting a slice of profit from the factions and xur the factions are there to provide u with a false sense of accomplishment and to distract u with free stuff once u again donate enough stuff to them its all a conspiracy... ur simply buying ur own stuff from xur while spending ur hard earned currency on useless crap they provide u

The fun thing about xur, is there is so little about him, any theory is possible. The worst thing about xur, is that there is so little about him, any theory is possible. :) That said, my personal and mostly unfounded opinion of Xur is he as something created by the Nine using some aspect of the darkness. Not saying he is evil, but the void tentacles of his face I think are part of what is holding the cells of his body together. He makes a statement that "The Awoken didn't have a choice. We did." I think that means the awoken didn't choose to have the dark half of their nature but the nine did. Xurs cells and body is not his own, but amassed together and controlled by the void. Xur refers to himself as plural, so he is likely a combination of cells from multiple sources all pulled together by the tentacles of darkness that emanate from him. As far as the nine. I've considered the possibility of them being survivors of various species previously destroyed by the darkness, assisting us from the shadows to possible leviathans like the one the sisters encountered on their way to the worm gods in the books of sorrows, to something else entirely. Regardless of who they are, they have knowledge of and are able to in part manipulate the darkness imo.

Crap I thought the same thing

Not everyone in the Destiny universe are guardians. He's likely not a guardian.

Edited by iM Dirt Napz: 10/30/2016 7:57:26 PMHe's the agent of the nine, The nine are Deep-Orbit warminds, He is Jovian, to be Jovian means to live on or around Jupiter. You can watch an interesting video on planet destiny about Xûr. http://planetdestiny.com/xur-agent-nine/

An invisible striker? LOL
-
Xur is that one creepy old guy that arrives at the party. You kind of want him to leave but he brings the booze so you let him stay for the time being.
-
I like this theory, man. It's really interesting and makes a good amount of sense.
-
The nine are the same as the nine divines from ES lore.. this leaves xur as Martin Septum.. who took the shape of Akatosh as a dragon. Xur is an Ahamkara cowboy of sorts. Mystery solved

I've always been interested in this. I like that notion, but he himself wouldn't be part of the 9, as he always refers to himself as a servant of the 9, and a lot of his quotes support that he is not only a servant, but their slave. "I am only an Agent. The Nine rule beyond the Jovians." "I do not entirely control my movements." "My will is not my own." "I am merely a trash collector for the Nine." ~Xur I really hope that in D2 we learn more about Xur, and even though we love getting nice things from him, i hope we save him from his servitude. that would be a very rewarding experience for me. #RescueXur and i just found a quote I find very interesting: "Your Traveler has a dark mirror." I'm not sure if he's just referring to oryx or crota, but I'm imagining something that's yet to be revealed, and potentially even one of the 9. Like a giant Dark sphere that approaches earth to finish the traveler off. D2's big boss I hope.
-
A cool note i always remember about Xur: i remember reading that xur only sells what the 9 don't use anymore; so what DO the 9 use?
-
Xur = Aang?
-
Warlocks wear hoods though toooooo
-
Destiny lore nerds will hammer you hard for this... Even though the nine are super unknown, if you don't agree with the "approved" theory of theirs you will be attacked and told how stupid you are, even if their theory is based on like two sentences of grimiore....

What if Rasputin is connected to The Nine? I'm think of this because of the second statement regarding what The Nine are- The Nine are deep-orbit warminds who weathered the Collapse in hardened stealth platforms. The reason being Rasputin was thought to be dead by fallen and guardians Rasputin was believed to have died during the collapse. Rasputin survived/weathered the collapse. I was just thinking about is all.

More correct or logical would be that the each of the Nine is a Grandmaster to thier class. To them each subclass is a class. They do not refer to themselves as hunters titans or warlocks. The subclasses we have would be a single deticated class to them. For example one of the Nine is a Grandmaster gunslinger. He doesnt know anything about nightstalkeing or bladedancing but he or she has become the embodiment of what it means to be a gunslinger. Same goes for everyother subclass. Xur is the embodiment of every class but not a Grandmaster. He has simply exisited to be skilled at every class not only one. That way he would have authority to sell us gear from every class. Xur is a skilled hunter, warlock, and titan, but cannot use the skills because he doesnt have the light to do so. Becoming all three has voided him of light as seen by the darkness and depth of his face/body. He has however been allowed by the nine Grandmaster to sell items due to his detitcation and his skills. Or some shit like that
-
Xur is a trash collector of the nine. Xur as you mentioned wears an assortment of class items. Now what happens to the armor and weapons when we die? Does it just litter the cosmodrome? Notice the weapons and armor are at an inferior light. Now imagine someone decided they could make money off their deaths. That's more than likely Xur. Selling us the items of dead guardians for your strange coins so he can set loose skolas.
-
I like the idea, but it's pretty obvious that xur isn't a gaurdian. He even says that the light hurts him sometimes
-
He also carries the backpack of the cryptarchy. Must be why he never brings anything useful.
-
They're from the jovial beyond but it hunk its Jupiter's moons. "He even saw a wishing dragon on Jupiter's moon once" could be an Ahamkara out there. We don't know since his will is not his own. He isn't a guardian though so he isn't anything
