I wanted to make this post to help tie in the RoI SIVA storyline into the global Destiny story. While on the surface it may appear that SIVA is a story spin off without relation to the original story, it is in fact not true. So this post is a bit of a historical backdrop that hopefully ties the two together.
In the Golden Age, Clovis Bray the man and namesake of his company, creates the warminds. The warminds are among humanity’s greatest creations. Hardened AI bunkers used to develop research and protect humanity.
A group of scientist on Venus, part of the researching organization called the Ishtar Collective, are investigating another race which has appeared in our system, the Vex. This research results in new technology, technology that allows alternate timelines to be viewed via a machine called “The Device”.
What purpose did the Device serve?
From Vex 5: “The purpose of the system is intelligence, you see. It’s stenciled right on the hull: SxISR. Special asset.”
Under the supervision of a warmind, the scientists use the Device to gather intel. And the intel is alarming. Viewed timelines foreshadowing coming darkness and chaos.
Thus the Exodus Project. A golden age effort to colonize humanity beyond our solar system. The name is interesting and I consider telling. Exodus is not an expansionistic term. By definition, Exodus is mass departure, withdrawal, or evacuation. I think the term Exodus implies the project’s goal was to get off earth to avoid the coming darkness. I also stress the term “beyond our solar system”. Colonization within our solar system was already occurring. Colonies on Luna, Mercury, Venus, Mars, etc, existed already. This is a deep-space project, as the submind in Old Russia 4 states: “we will be nine billion miles away” which conveniently puts things outside the edges of our system, well past Pluto.
All those colony ships sitting the in Cosmodrome? That was where it all occurred. Under Rasputin the warmind’s direction, a massive and aggressive colonization effort was put in place. We know the name of some of those colony ships. Exodus Blue is one (crucible). Exodus Red is another (Old Russia 2).
The Device intel about the coming darkness? Rasputin had this intel, and he was acting on it as noted in Old Russia 3.
“Rasputin quietly moving another doomsday weapon into Earth orbit. And all the other launches too, not just weapons but people, the colonization schedule pushed up…as if the need to disperse is now imperative.”
But in order for this colonization effort to take place, tools were needed: SIVA. From RoI, we have a pretty negative view and understanding of SIVA. We view scenes and grimoire showing an aggressive swarming cloud of nanobots attacking and infecting those around it. SIVA corrupting the environment and being bastardized by Fallen in an attempt to gain power.
But SIVA was meant to be a colonization tool. Given the proper directives, SIVA is a non harmful swarm of nanobots capable of constructing colonies. It doesn’t need food, sleep or power, so it can be sent deep into space on long journeys.
When the Iron Lords found records of a golden age construction technology capable of building up colonies at an advanced rate, they saw SIVA as an opportunity to restore what was lost.
But what the Iron Lords did not know, is that even Golden Age humanity was not without their flaws.
Humanity couldn’t just leave SIVA as a construction tool, they wanted to weaponize it as shown below. The Iron Lords thought they were searching for a peaceful, colony building version of SIVA, but little did they know, SIVA could be used in a military manner was well.
One thing Bungie did that I like in this DLC is the flavor text on the raid gear across all 3 classes when put together in order of record documents a golden age conversation between a WB and a CL. WB being Willa Bray, and CL being General Chen Lanshu (reference Old Russia 3 card).
Here is the total conversation between Willa Bray (works for Clovis Bray) and General Lanshu from the raid gear:
CL: Let’s get right to it. How can Clovis Bray help the Exodus project?
WB: We’ve found a way to push our matter encryption technology even further. Habitats, equipment, repairs of all kinds – all of these can be made from one material. SIVA doesn’t expire, degrade, or forget. It can remain dormant even on long voyages. Nearly any problem a deep-space colonist could have, SIVA can fix.
CL: And how long do the effects of SIVA last?
WB: Well, SIVA requires no external power source, so….forever. Just give it a directive, and it won’t stop until it gets a new directive.”
CL: This sounds like it could be invaluable to Exodus colonists. But Malahayati has some concerns. (my addition, Malahayati is an exo sub-mind of Rasputin and friend of General Lanshu, see Old Russia 3 card)
WB: Generally, poorly worded or malicious code is the fault of the programmer, not SIVA itself.
CL: Doctor Bray, I’m sure you’ve realized SIVA’s applications extend beyond colonization.”
WB: I’m not sure what you mean, General. Is this still about the Exodus program?
CL: The Exodus program would be interested in exploring SIVA’s defensive applications.
WB: General, my team did not intend for SIVA to have military applications.
CL: Willa, some of history’s greatest inventions began as unintended side effects.
So humanity expanded SIVA’s capabilities. And Rasputin holds the keys to assigning SIVA’s directive. In Rasputin 6, Rasputin gives SIVA the directive to kill the Iron Lords and we see what happens. How different the scenario would have been if Rasputin had used SIVA for its original purpose. The why rasputin did what he did is another topic for another time. This is an important narrative because many have the perspective that SIVA is some uncontrollable force. It is very much controllable with right directive.
And based on Old Russia 4, we know that Rasputin placed SIVA in at least one of the colony ships (likely Exodus Red). In fact, in re-reading the Old Russia 3 card (released with TTK), I believe we had the first documented SIVA sighting back in the Golden Age. As General Lanshu is gliding (in a glide suit) around the colony ships in the cosmodrome, she “…waggles her wings at a cloud of passing sensor mites…”
So the SIVA story arc is a continuation and expansion of the previous story. All the work that Maya Sundaresh (and others) did to research the Vex and create the Device, ultimately derived the intel which uncovered the threat (Darkness, the collapse) which SIVA was used to help address (Exodus project). It is also interesting that the parallel paths that Rasputin took lay the ground work for two of our Factions, the Future War Cult and Dead Orbit. We’ve already linked the Device to the FWC, but the SIVA colonization is right in line with Dead Orbit. Rasputin is both arming himself for the inevitable battle to come (ala FWC) and trying to get everyone off planet (ala DO).
In fact, I would consider the SIVA backstory as the backdrop for the origin of the Dead Orbit faction, much like how the Vex research and the Device was the backdrop for the origin of the FWC.
Hopefully this helps put SIVA in perspective regarding the Destiny story so far.

Awesome deduction, finally no one complaining about what weapons need to be nerfed. Props

Edited by OsbourneD3: 11/16/2016 8:15:15 PMAmazing, simply amazing. Destiny has such a good lore and it is awesome when it's put together in a cohesive manner like this. Props.

If you read the lore on SIVA it was actually a good thing like nanobots on steroids you could eat them play with them build with them and do any thing you wanted with them it was only during the Exodus Project that a general decided to try and weaponize it so he took a small amount and changed its code from Dormant~ to ~Consume,~Enhance,~Replicate. Even then however it was locked away in a vault to experiment with it. But when 300 iron lords came to get it 292 were killed by Rasputin and the additional 7 by SIVA not including Salidin of course. SIVA killed because of programming that it gained when Rasputin awoke it from dormancy. So SIVS in its self is actually bad just its programming is dangerous it could be redirected with good programming though. Thats how out Raid Gear Works and doesn't consume us into Spiced Guardians. Also after it was let out of containment Rasputin did not try to put it back into dormancy instead he let it roam with the new directive and consume enhance replicate everything.

Edited by Penhalion Wolfe: 10/18/2016 10:44:19 AMThe exodus program is no huge mystery! It was triggered by the following as the grimour pretty much points out! Earth was overcrowded. Mankind was looking for new homes as Earth couldn't support it's population. The exodus is wrongly attributed to the coming of the darkness. SIVA was developed as a colonisation tool. SIVA was usurped by the military primarily under the guise of providing colony protection. SIVA has a kill switch! Basically, if we were able to find even one colonist on board the ships (still alive) who worked on the Clovis project we could simply kill all siva instances using the kill switch. Rasputin by definition both controls and can therefore kill SIVA. He's been using it to both build constructs and presumably war sats, complexes etc. etc. A very frightening thing that Saladin Forge says, when we ask about getting Rasputin to help, is that Rasputin hasn't been "Just a warmind" for a very long time! He then says Rasputin was the one who killed the iron lords in the first place! A further clue that Rasputin is protecting mankind from US is that he went nova when he detected entities with a traveller i.e. [O] energy signature in the SIVA facility! After that he didn't ask any questions but, curiously was on the verge of creating an actual physical manifestation of himself at the end of the battle when Saladin was locked out of the chamber. This implies that he was going to tell them why they were being attacked! Edit: Even more curious (and I hope they start addressing these cliff hanger questions in Destiny 2) is that Rasputin does not consider YOU to be like the other guardians. this means one of two things that either your energy signature is not [O] i.e. traveller in origin, which would jell with the fact that your guardian is from the golden age when Rasputin was created or Rasputin, for some reason known only to him, does not consider you to be a threat to mankind. And I'll throw this wild one out there. I think Shiro is a direct Rasputin shell. Why, well because he creates a weapon for you from SIVA and knows how to both control and manipulate it. Something that should by definition not be possible for him or anyone else without golden age knowledge. Even the devil splicers are just winging it.

Very interesting read. Thank you for this.

Also interesting to note: Ghost fragment Rasputin 6 shows Rasputin detecting the iron lords and authorizing siva use to kill them. After he also doesn't reset his moral structures and states to target Guardians it seems. Rasputin not resetting moral structures aka no care for life:
Query: Re-engage population protection objectives. (N) Query: Reset moral structures. (N) Query: Activate defense subroutine AURORA RETROFLEX. (Y)
Ras targeting iron lords:
SITE 6 has been breached by unauthorized users with [O] energy. I am invoking PALISADE IMPERATIVE. [O] lifeforms in restricted areas will be suppressed. SIVA use authorized. Self-destructs disengaged. Security codes reset. All defenses activated. Frames activated. REPLICATE. ELIMINATE. IMMUNIZE. ..... SITE 6 secure. Restoring reactivation protocols. Activating SCRY OVERSIGHT. Target [O] lifeforms. Event mode set to SILENT VELES.
the last section shows he plans to target [O] life forms which is commonly believed to represent Guardians.

I think the form of siva they found was weaponized by ras, not humans.

SIVA is returning in D2? This was a concept art made by Bungie and it really resembles the pyramid things SIVA makes.
Just a theory
Edited by ReaperCaveman: 10/20/2016 1:21:55 AMjust wondering would siva be able to fix or revive the traveler in your opinion? or in anyones?
-
SIVA is good, we just see the negative sides of how you could use it.

Nice lore post. Keep up the good work.

Edited by ferial56: 10/19/2016 8:27:30 PMI don't SIVA point.

Is there any evidence that humanity was able to leave (at least some) and go to another universe?
-
The true question is: did rasputin was trying to build an army of fallen, to help humanity survive the darkness?
-
Great thread with lots of great highlighted info and theories, some of which was entirely new info to me since I seldom delve into the grimoires. I sincerely hope Destiny 2 does a better job of laying the story out in front of us, or makes it easier to absorb through searching and uncovering content in-game rather than tucking it tightly away on their website.

Holy wall of text! Great read though. There is so much to the destiny story. Wish it wasn't locked away in cards that I never read. Lol I read a giant post a while back that has the story in the hive which was just amazing. ----------- Wonder if we will see any of those humans from the exodus project. Did a colony take root somewhere out there? Could the come back in D2 to help us fight the darkness? Cool stuff.

Impressive work Guardian, but you forgot one thing..........
dismantle mines yesss?
-
Ah so as with Mala if the theory's are true then The Stranger and Cade are the Male and female forms of Rasputin. He used them as research tools to gather if Guardians were worthy of his protection.

Why would Rasputin want to kill the iron lords?
-
Edited by Antares-3: 10/18/2016 2:30:10 PMYou need to look into the Seraphs, and midnight exigent. Things will seem more conspiracy like, but it makes it all come full circle.

New monarchy is stupid and doesn't see how bad it is.
-
Are you guys seriously discussing the gift cards quotes lol?
-
I'm interested in learning why Rasputin destroyed the iron lords
-
And dead orbit is really stupid, still trying to run from the problem not understanding that there is a bigger problem where they're headed.
-
So fwc is bad and killed iron lords.

So get this: six months ago I started working on a story based around Destiny. It's title was Exodus, and revolved around an ancient ship found by Guardians made exclusively to travel the universe. It was powered by an unknown, multipurpose technology. I literally accidentally developed a story parallel to the cannon knowing nothing of the Exodus program (I mean, i didn't know about beyond-solar-system colonization), and before knowing about SIVA. Crazy
