Calm, hope, but most of all, life. He opened his eyes for what seemed to be the first time. He looked around, his eyes drawing in the image of ash, torn banners and charred bone. He knew what it was, but he did not understand. Not yet. "Guardian." The voice was behind him. He turned and he saw the orb. Somehow he knew what it was. Ghost. As he stood, again for the first time, the Ghost spoke again. "Guardian, let's get you home."
They wandered the wilderness for hours. The landscape was nothing but a picture of death and destruction. The clouds cast a gloomy gray over the ruined and collapsed buildings, that had once made up a beautiful and prosperous city. Now, it was derelict of almost all life, and the only light was the smoldering of the fires that lived in the buildings.
"What happened here?" He asked as he surveyed his surroundings. The Ghost paused for a moment before answering.
"I don't know. It looks like this may have been the work of the Fallen."
"What are the Fallen?" The man asked.
"Just hope that you don't meet them," Ghost replied, "They don't take kindly to people being in their territory."
As they continued further into their journey, the man noticed more bodies. There were alien bodies mixed in with the human ones.
"We're getting closer to Fallen territory. Keep your guard up," Ghost whispered. The man nodded and ripped an old rifle from the dead hands of a corpse. He checked the weapon to make sure it was functioning properly before he continued.
An hour later they saw live Fallen for the first time.
"Hide!" Ghost said, and the two ducked behind one of the many ruined buildings in the area.
"It's just a small patrol," Ghost assured him, "we can avoid them."
"Are you sure they can smell us or something?" The man asked.
"No, but still be very careful, we wouldn't want to risk one of them spotting us. Just move slowly and quietly and we can-"
There was a small pop and a tiny shockwave rippled the sky. A flying vehicle descended to rest about 300 meters north from where the two were standing. A giant metal spider detached from the vehicle and slammed into the ground below. A moment later, a large device materialized close to the spider.
"That's a Glimmer drill," Ghost said, "They have huge areas of operation. They'll find us for sure!"
"Is there any way we can escape without being noticed?" The man asked.
"No."
"What about that?" The man said and nodded towards the flying vehicle, still floating there, dormant.
"Hmm.. That may actually work. I can hack the system to give us control of the ship and fly us out of here."
"One problem," the man said. "How are we going to get over there with out getting noticed?"
"I can transmit you up there," Ghost replied, but you'll have to kill the pilot. Are you ready?"
"Ready as I'll ever be."
"Okay. Transmitting in three, two, one!"
It felt like his body was ripped into tiny pieces and each piece was moving at the speed of light. Then it was over. He stood in the back of the ship. Ghost appeared beside him. The Fallen heard the noise and turned to see two intruders on its ship. It bellowed a challenge, then its face was filled with lead. The alien crumpled sideways and a white mist shrieked and out of the spot where the head had been split.
"Congratulations. You just killed your first Fallen. I'll just hack these controls and we can get out of here."
The Ghost flew over to the control panel before firing a small beam from its eye into the controls.
"Alright, let's see here... I think this is it. Uh-oh."
"What?"
"I just signaled the Walker that there were intruders on boards. It's preparing to fire."
"Well, DO something!"
"I can't! The controls have shut me out!"
"Then I'll do it." The man sat at the pilot's seat and mashed buttons. The ship flew backwards straight into the side of the building. The building shattered and groaned at the impact, sending out huge clouds of dust and debris.
"Well, you avoided the huge shell, but the walker is preparing another shot," Ghost commented.
"Alright, I think I got it this time." The ship pulled out of the building and flew up into the sky just as the shell from the walker pierced the building where the ship has been moments ago. It collapsed into a pile of rubble, burying some of the foot soldiers nearby. The walker charged it's canon again, but it was too late, the ship was out of range.
"We did it!" Ghost shouted. "Let's get to the city."
Click here for the next chapter
