The Road To Dawn
Book One: Morning Crimson
Chapter Five: A Superiority Complex
“We should probably find Jack, Phantom.” Said Omicron.
“Nah, I’d rather sit here and think. I still can’t remember why we crashed in the first place.” I said.
“I’d say your common sense is on point too. Must have lost it in the crash too.” Omicron said
“What did you just say! I thought robots weren’t supposed to sass people back…” I said, in disbelief at what Omicron said.
“And I thought Guardians were supposed to help each other.”
“Fine, you have me there. Where do we start?”
“I’ll try tracking Shade. Give me a moment.” Omicron shed his body to a glowing orb, pushing his spikes to the end of the orb. He closed back into his shell. “He’s Northwest from here, at a remote facility from the golden age. Odd he isn’t looking for us, Let's go.”
“Hopefully no fallen are around there.” I sighed, Omicron summoning my sparrow. I hopped on and took off towards the facility.
“It should only be a mile or so from here.” Omicron said. The gray, dusty landscape flew by me. Nothing was around me, almost barren until we came upon the facility. I heard a sound behind my racing sparrow, to which I turned to look at.
“Oh this is bad, this is so bad…” It was a ketch, racing behind me towards the facility as well. I looked forward at the facility again, pushing the throttle of the sparrow to its limit, making it to the facility. The ketch still sped toward the facility too.
A giant power conduit tunnel hung above me, supported by giant pillars. The dark brown doors of the facility were open.
“I’m guessing he is in there.” said Omicron.
“Hopefully” I responded, running through the doors. The sight I saw on the other side of the door. In the corner of this huge room, sat Jack in a fetal position. His auto rifle sat broke on the floor in front of him. “What in the world happened to you Jack?” I said to him.
“Why me...why me…” He said in response. “The Fallen are after me. I already had to kill a whole platoon...My weapon broke…” I walked over towards him until I stood over top of him.
“Pull yourself together!” I shouted at him. “Is this what you’re going to do when something doesn’t go your way?”
“I….I…”
“You can’t call yourself a guardian if you cower in the corner. Only a pathetic kinderguardian. Now get up, we can do this.” I said confidently. I raised out my hand, pulling him up to his feet when he grabbed it.
“How are we going to? My weapon broke…” He said, looking at the weapon on the ground.
“Here, take this.” I grabbed my scout rifle off of my back and held it infront of me. The color scheme is brilliant. A black night sky like scheme dotted with white and orange stars spread across the surface of the sleek rifle.
“I can’t take this. It so beautiful, why would you give this away?” Jack said in awe.
“I can always make another one, you’re the one who needs it the most now.” I handed the rifle to him, to which he held it in amazement. “Besides, I might have another one somewhere. And it’s not like I don’t have a secondary weapon.” I grabbed my sidearm from its holster, cocking it back in preparation.
“Thank you so much, i’ll never forget this.”
“Good, let this serve a lesson to you. Don’t cry like a baby when things go bad.”
“Fine...What should I call the rifle?”
“Hm….I know! Graham’s Gradient, or The Gradient for you.”
“Ok, will do.” Jack stared back down at the rifle, looking up at the door. Growling sounds came from the door, the Fallen are here.
“We got this,” I said in encouragement. Fallen dregs and vandals began to run in the door, and we began our firefight against them. Bullets and shock rounds flew from each side of the room. We were managing to just dodge each bullet, but they weren’t so lucky. The more of our bullets that hit, the more of them that fell. We took our share of bullets, but our shields absorbed the damage with ease.
We almost had all of them down, but then the servitor came. It strengthened our lasting foes, making it harder to take them down. They began to advance with the help of their mighty lifeline, allowing them to try to corner us. But, before that, the servitor mysteriously exploded into glowing purple scraps on the ground. The few fallen left turned and looked back in fear at what stood behind them.
“Hey, just in the nick of time. Comms went dark, so they sent me after you.” Ivan stood at door, his rifle in hand.
“Thanks, you obsessive compulsive disorder freak.” I took out the last of the remaining fallen, stepping over the corpses to make my way to Ivan. “You’re going to pay me back for destroying my ship, you condescending jerk. My head still hurts”
I rubbed my head, acting as if the pain still lingered. My only hope now is an obsessive compulsive, superiority complexed Titan. Great.
