britain will quit the EU in January or February 2019, Whitehall sources have hinted.
Theresa May is keen to trigger the Article 50 exit process in the first two months of next year – starting a two-year countdown to full withdrawal.
The PM has so far refused to say publicly when Brexit will happen, indicating only that the process will not begin before the end of this year.
But after Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting her spokeswoman said there was now “a strong emphasis on pushing ahead to Article 50”.
And it is understood Mrs May has told EU leaders the countdown will be triggered “early” in the new year.
On a visit to Northern Ireland Brexit Secretary David Davis pledged to fight for tariff-free access to Europe during the negotiations.
It follows Mrs May’s decision to make an immigration clampdown the first red line of the talks.
That means Britain has little chance of retaining full access to the single market, leading to fears of tariffs of up to 10% on goods and services.
However new pro-Europe group Open Britain will today call for us to retain full membership of the single market while also seeking to reform free movement rules.
Poland’s Deputy PM Mateusz Morawiecki said Brexit could lead to 200,000 Poles returning home.
