I know what you mean. I am max light on all characters, but my best gaming friends are a bit lower than me. I can't really go into a match with them because if I lead, I am bringing them to a realm of torture. If they lead, I bring torture to other, low light level players.

Somehow I think you are exaggerating or your friends are just plain garbage at this game

No my good friends are only like level 20-36. If they are leading the fireteam, I am pulled into a game with people around their levels and not mine. When I lead, they are pulled into games where people are higher levels with better weapons and armor.

Yes, but who is to say that with weapons? Not all weapons were created equal.
