You're fine with your wireless network as long as your router is relatively modern. Wired is better, of course, but you know that.
Pinging with the properly sized packet and for a substantial period of time is actually a good way to figure out the round trip latency between you and a destination...regardless of what the OP keeps telling people. It isn't perfect, and it doesn't tell the whole story, but it's useful.
Anyway, if you want the best possible connection, go wired.
If you don't take gaming as seriously as those who think every ms matters, wireless is fine. The latest standards have really done a good job of catching up to your typical home Gb ethernet connection. As long as your console is positioned appropriately and you don't have a wall filled with liquid or electromagnetic devices between you and your router, you'll probably be ok...
Fyi - Sometimes I move my console to a room that doesn't yet have an rj-45 jack, and I notice no difference.
