Faster Than Light Travel
I feel there needs to be a discussion on the greatly overlooked fact that the Ships that we fly are FTL capable, but it is not mentioned in the lore as to what grants the capability of FTL travel.
[Just as an edit, I am more interested in the link between the Ships FTL ability and the Vex's ability to teleport. For Lore purposes]
I want to try throw physics at the issue as I feel that there must be a link between the device that grants FTL travel and the Vex networks.
I have a theory that the Traveller and The Light have given Humanity the blueprints to create such a device which may have been refined with how the Vex travel between spaces. My evidence is the fact that there is no evidence towards Humanity having FTL travel before the collapse. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
The Transmat system the Ghosts use must have some link to FTL abilities, as the ships are essentially teleporting between planets.
The system the ships use must be different as no ship ever goes FTL in atmosphere, where as Transmat is used pretty much anywhere.
What bothers me here is why Ships can't be Transmatted between planets when Ghosts on their own are capable of doing just that.
On top of all that is the fact neither FTL or Transmatt capabilities should be able to exist.
I can't find a way to explain either one logically such that it doesn't create paradoxes or a ton more questions that can only be answered with silly excuses.
I don't want to bring up outside sources such as Halo but in Halo there was a more refined Lore on FTL travel, most specifically in the books and i feel there needs to be more information on the Ships FTL Drives in Destiny.
Other things such as what type of thrusters the Ships use, what fuel they use doesn't seem to be mentioned anywhere. At this point you would think Humanity would start building larger ships to use as offensive structures and mobile command posts to try extend Human controlled territories around Earth and onto other planets.
I will add to this post when I get more time but for now I want some peoples opinions on the matters at hand.

1 ReplyShips in destiny don't seem to function like other items. When a jumpship is broken, Ghost can't just fix it like you or your gear and weapons. It has to get sent back to the tower hangar for repairs by Holiday and the other Shipwrights. This is also the reason why I think Destiny won't be including space battles, or at least space PvP battles, anytime soon. Furthermore, while you are on a planet, Ghost can't just pack up your ship into your inventory with your other stuff, it flies away, and stays in orbit until you call it back down, or beam up to it. And yes, even during the Golden Age, they hadn't quite figured out how to reach other Solar Systems yet. The Darkness arrived and ruined any plans of interstellar travel we had. But once we beat the darkness and bring back the golden age, we will most likely return to trying to crack that code. [i]sidenote:[/i] I'm not actually sure if Ghosts can just teleport to other planets. Even Vex. I believe in the Cabal Grimoire card, the ghost says it was a stowaway on a one way trip to Mars, and it was already too far from the traveler to make it back on its own. It couldn't find a guardian but it did gather Intel on the cabal for us. As for the Vex, they can teleport to different locations on a planet, but interplanetary travel means they have to first enter a nexus, like the Black Garden, and cross through a designated gate to get from Planet to Planet, or Star to Star, maybe even Galaxy to Galaxy. They have gate networks on every planet, even on Earth, but a lot of them are dormant for some reason, which is why we don't see them on Earth to my understanding. Just throwing in some food for thought.

See the warlocks artifact the "Warp Fragment". What interests me is the fact that humanity hasn't fully expanded past the solar system. Only a few people have tried. One reason for this would be the fact that humanity is a near type two civilization and may have been working on a Dyson Sphere.

2 RepliesThe current theory is using an alcubierre drive to traverse distances by contracting space in front of it and expanding space behind it, resulting in effective faster-than-light travel. It doesn't make sense to me but i'm not a physicist. As for transmatt, i imagine its similar to star treks where matter is broken down in on place then reassembled in another.

Often times - you end up at the same exact place that your previous match was at. Just saying. Also, speed of light/FTL is a construct of this universe. By definition the speed of light (or any constant) is slowing down because of the 2nd law of thermodynamics. Once we are outside of this universe then speed of light is non-existent. I like to think or imagine music without any beats. It's kinda hard to think that it's even possible.

Ships are noted as using NLS drives, Near Light Speed. Canonically Humanity has no means of FTL travel but gameplay wise it just wouldn't be practical to make you wait minutes at a time just to move between planets. [spoiler]And let's not get started on zero-delay communication between Earth and Saturn.[/spoiler]

Or we could sit watching a loading screen for half an hour while we wait to arrive at our destination. Think of the ships flying in the load screen as being in fast forward.

1 ReplyFTL Travel isnt in the game. In the mission where you you pick up your ships second engine its reffered to as an NLS Drive, Near Light Speed, Near, so not faster than but rather nearly as fast.

The traveler brought us into the golden age where we discovered things like this, I'm assuming that's how we settled Mars and such.

4 RepliesWho says where flying past the speed if light? Maybe where flying at the speed of light. It would explain the travel time/loading screen. It takes a few minutes for light to travel from one planet to another.

10 RepliesIt would take roughly .75 seconds to get to Mars from earth at near light speed ... So it is completely believable that it would take 10-15 seconds (loading screen) to get to Saturn from Mercury

Because the Traveler. Seriously, the Space Magic logic is pretty straightforward. If the Traveler was capable of terraforming entire planets and creating the somewhat sentient mechanisms like the Ghosts then one could definitely infer that the Traveler had, at one point in time, the ability to communicate and/or transfer its knowledge. How such would be executed is beyond me, but whatever is mentioned in the lore can be applied.

3 RepliesIf I'm not mistaken, ability to travel FTL is referred to as a "warp drive" in the game. I would assume that destinys concept of a warp drive is similar in nature to warp drives in other fiction : you aren't physically traveling faster than light, you are warping between two physical locations in space and time either through simulated wormholes, folds in space time, shortcuts, Etc. As for the transmat system, I find it very similar in nature to teleportation in star trek. It's short range instant transmission of matter by breaking matter down to its basic particles in one location and perfectly reconstructing it in another location. Trans (transmit) Mat (matter).

2 RepliesIf you look into the games' files and on the wiki, there is an object called NLS drive. I'm pretty sure this is an acronym for "Near Light Speed", but I may be wrong. Just a guess. Also the drive was deleted material.
