Dear Customer Service and Support,
I've posted this question to Customer Service with account details, but it is also game-related, so I am also posting here. If I am contacted directly or securely by Bungie, I can provide account details as necessary.
This is a question related to both the store and Refer-a-friend.
I have a 10-year-old son who I just introduced to Destiny. In 2015, I purchased the original version of Destiny on disc, and in succession as they've come out, I've purchased each of the add-ons up to, and including, The Taken King.
I just let my son start playing the game, and he enjoyed it, but I wanted to surprise him and be able to play it together. So yesterday, I purchased a second Xbox, and I purchased a second copy/license for Destiny. To be able to play the new add-on that comes out in September, I purchased/pre-ordered a digital copy of Rise of Iron. It seemed the smart thing to do.
I can load Destiny on both Xboxes, and I can join his character to my fireteam, BUT his Refer-a-Friend status will not progress, because it says that he must purchase a copy of The Taken King. I have the disc loaded in our original Xbox One, and I'm running the digital copy in our new Xbox One.
I'm not going to put money into his Xbox Live account -- he's only 10. I've made a substantial investment to play this game with him, and aside from Bungie's system not registering that he personally does not have a digital license for The Taken King associated with his account, I cannot see why we are hung up at this point. If my purchased disc was for all content up to The Taken King, he had that disc inserted and running while he was logged in, and I was on our 2nd Xbox with either a disc or the digital license I just purchased, there wouldn't be a problem. If the issue is that there are two digital copies of TKK content licensed to my account, then I see the problem as being an issue with how digital licensing is handled...or this is a programmatic/game logic issue in cases such as this.
If you look at my account, you will see that I have two fully-purchased licenses for The Taken King, the content required for both of us to play together and do the Refer-a-Friend quest.
If the issue is that both digital licenses for TTK are on my account, and neither is on my son's, I would say this:
The purpose of the Refer-a-friend program is for Bungie to get more customers (cutting to the chase). I'm a very loyal Bungie customer (right from the original Halo), and I've gone far beyond what Bungie was hoping for by purchasing a second gaming system and personally purchasing a second copy of the game (i.e. not relying on someone else or looking for some new player online who already has Destiny). I could have gone the route that other people go and run one digital license on two consoles, but I didn't do that. I decided to support Bungie.
My son doesn't know that I've done this yet (it's a surprise). I'd really like to fix this and see him excited to the bursting point when sees that he "gets to do the Refer-a-friend" -- and with me. Will Bungie support me?
Please help me fix this.
Sincerely,
etherealweb

Edited by Anidien: 8/25/2016 2:15:33 PMIf I'm following correctly here - you purchased the second copy from your account, and not your son's? If this is the case, then yes, unfortunately your son would not be eligible for Refer a Friend. RaF does not function with Digital Rights Management features that allow an account to play content owned by another account. Both the veteran and referee must own TTK directly on their individual accounts. If this is the case, I'd advise contacting Microsoft to discuss any possible options. Not saying there are any options, just that if there are, that would be entirely up to Microsoft. The way licensing is handled is a console feature.
